Socio-Economic Inequality and Its Representations: Context and Pretext

Socio-economic inequality in the United States is both severe and rising, driven by near unrestrained corporate behavior in the marketplace, the workplace, and the political domain. While this dynamic has been most evident at a material level, amply demonstrated statistically and descriptively, at the symbolic level socio-economic polarization is much less apparent. The effect of this disjuncture is to obscure, if not mystify, the full character of socio-economic reality in the United States. This presentation will focus on the interpenetration of the material and symbolic aspects of socio-economic inequality by viewing the forms that exist “out there” (in social practices and institutions) and forms that are inscribed “in here” (in our heads and in our collective imagination). Among other things, by putting a lens on the reciprocally-confirming relationship between social life and its representations, we confront important and necessary questions about the role and the place of the Liberal Arts (both as institution and as intellectual stance) in the society, thereby prompting critical reflection on our own relationship to the social order and to social change

Gastronomie française à la sauce américaine Enquête sur l\u27industrialisation de pratiques artisanales

Les Français se représentent le monde de la gastronomie partagé entre la « haute cuisine », univers où excelle leur génie, et l’alimentation de masse, dominée par des pratiques industrielles d’inspiration américaine. Rien n’est plus faux. Entre les années 1970 et les années 1990, le champ de la gastronomie opère une mutation. Les process industriels venus d’Outre-Atlantique pénètrent le monde de la cuisine française, notamment à travers l’implantation réussie des fast-foods. Les grandes institutions et les acteurs de la gastronomie s’adaptent très vite à ces changements. Dès lors, la distinction s’efface entre, d’un côté, une cuisine fondée sur les savoir-faire singuliers et les compétences individuelles et, de l’autre, les préparations standardisées, produites à grande échelle par les technologies de l’industrie agro-alimentaire. De même que s’estompe la ligne de démarcation jusque-là infranchissable qui séparait traditionnellement les grands chefs de cuisine des grands chefs d’entreprise. L’analyse implacable de Rick Fantasia révèle ainsi comment le champ gastronomique, qui avait gagné son autonomie à la fin du XIXe siècle, a été absorbé dans la logique du champ économique. Ou comment les noms des plus grands chefs étoilés ont pu devenir des labels de gammes de la grande distribution. Häufig ist von gewichtiger Seite die amerikanische Wirtschaftmacht kritisiert worden, die zur Rechtfertigung neo-liberaler, sozialökonomischer Reformen in Europa und anderswo als Beispiel herangezogen worden sei. Bei genauerem Hinsehen wird man feststellen müssen, dass gerade unter den bedeutsameren Protesten manche einer ernsthaften Kritik gar nicht oder nur geschwächt standhalten. Die materiellen Bedingungen sind in besonderem Maße für die unqualifizierten Arbeiter hart, und ein zentraler, oft vernachlässigter Grund ist der erschreckende Befund, dass die gegenwärtige neoliberale Struktur weitgehend auf einer brutalen antigewerkschaftlichen Haltung beruht. Parallel zur systematischen Auflösung der Rechte der Arbeiter gibt es ein Anwachsen der Rechte der Verbraucher, deren symbolische Konstruktion das Verschwinden des (symbolisch aufgefassten) Arbeiters begunstigt hat. Deprivations of Work and Labor in the United States. Many grand claims are made about the strength of the US economy in justifying neo-liberal socio-economic reforms in Europe and elsewhere. When subjected to closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that several of the most important claims either do not hold or rest much more precariously than the promotional rhetoric would allow. Material conditions are especially rough for workers without professional or managerial standing, and a crucial, but largely unnoticed reason for this is the terrible fact that much of the contemporary neo-liberal framework has been built upon a brutal regime of anti-unionism. Alongside the systematic dissolution of worker rights has been an elevation of the rights of the consumer, whose symbolic construction has facilitated the disappearance of the worker in symbolic terms. Cependant en y prêtant plus d'attention, on remarque que parmi les protestations les plus importantes certaines ne tiennent pas ou deviennent plus fragiles. Les conditions matérielles sont particulièrement dures pour les travailleurs non qualifiés et une raison cruciale, largement ignorée, est le fait terrible que la plus grande partie de la structure néolibérale contemporaine a été construite sur un régime brutal d'antisyndicalisme. Parallèlement à la dissolution systématique des droits du travailleur, il y a eu un accroissement des droits du consommateur dont la construction symbolique a facilité la disparition du travailleur (en termes symboliques). No obstante, si se las examina con más atención, se puede observar que entre las más importantes, algunas no tienen fundamentü y otras se tornan más endebles. Las condiciones materiales son particularmente difíciles para los trabajadores no calificados, debido a un motivo crucial, ampliamente ignorado : el terrible hecho de que la mayor parte de la estructura neoliberal contemporánea ha sido construida sobre un régimen brutal de antisindicalismo. The Moral Economy of Neoliberalism: How Voters Use Neoliberal Ideology to (De)Legitimate Undocumented Worker Access to Labor Markets

Neoliberalism is prevalent in American life. While researchers have documented the use of neoliberal ideology in institutional and macrolevel policy contexts, they have yet to investigate how voters use neoliberal ideology to legitimate their position on economic policy. I use data from semi-structured interviews with 85 Tucsonans about why they voted the way they did on Proposition 202 (2008): “Arizona Stop Illegal Hiring”— which sought to reregulate undocumented worker labor market access—to address this gap. I found evidence of two distinct neoliberal ideological legitimations: “fair market competition” and “individual responsibility.” Furthermore, I use these data to shed light on the debate over whether neoliberalism spans partisan affiliation or converges with American conservatism. I found that voters across party lines who supported the measure paired neoliberal legitimations with conservative legitimations. We can interpret this bipartisan use of neoliberal ideology as evidence of a neoliberal “moral economy”—or consensus about the moral principles in which market action is embedded. Evidence of this moral economy indicates that moral principles from neoliberal ideology are simultaneously bipartisan and converge with American conservatism. These findings suggest that there could be a broader moral consensus among voters concerning the legitimacy of anti-immigration economic policie
