Liquid crystalline substances from virus-infected plants

Stanley has described the preparation of a crystalline protein possessing the properties of tobacco mosaic virus from the sap of infected tobacco and tomato plants. The crystals were small needles made by precipitation with acid ammonium sulphate. We have confirmed these results, but have found that by further purification the protein in neutral aqueous solution can be obtained in liquid crystalline states
