The effects of manure application on phosphorus loss

    Get PDF
Nutrient management from manure is important for multiple reasons. • To avoid water contamination • Take advantage of available nutrients on farm • Reduce off farm costs Each farm needs to tailor their manure plan to their farm. Currently Comprehensive Nutrient Management Plans (CNMPs) are much more complex than many farms need. The time commitment and cost can discourage many farmers from participating in this unless they are required to by the government either due to size or wanting to partake in a program. This doesn’t mean that there cannot be a plan in place to prevent excessive nutrient loss from incorrect application of manure

The African American Male Achievement Dilemma Through the Eyes of the African American Male Superintendent

This research study explores the perspective of African American male superintendents on the African American male achievement dilemma. How do African American male superintendents theorize and respond to the underachievement of African American male students? Do their experiences give them greater insight, and how has this potential insight contributed to the implementation of initiatives that have improved the performance of this subgroup? Three major theoretical perspectives were explored during my review of the literature. Critical Race, Social Reproduction, and Oppositional Culture Theory encompassed the most consistent themes during my research, and helped to situate the study within the broader education context. The primary research method involved the interview of four African American male superintendents leading districts in the state of South Carolina. In addition to exploring their perspective of the African American achievement dilemma, the study sought to investigate the likelihood that there was a cultural connection that provided greater insight into strategies and practices that positively impacted African American achievement. The results of the study indicated that the primary explanation for the achievement dilemma experienced by African American male students was a shift in social and cultural dynamics. Specifically, the disintegration of the family unit and the diminishing influence the extended community and church has had on young men and families were identified as having the greatest impact. The most prevalent response to the achievement dilemma has been the establishment of comprehensive mentoring programs. Three of the four superintendents have established Bow Tie Club mentoring initiatives structured around the 5 Well’s of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. All activities support the goal of ensuring that the participants are Well Read, Well Spoken, Well Dressed, Well Traveled, and Well Balanced. Although the research identified systematic inequities and racism as having a significant impact on the African American male’s ability to experience academic success, this study did not support that perspective

Women in Management: Problems and Prospects

According to David Bloom, Harvard economist, The rise in the number of working women is probably the single most important change that has ever taken place in the American labor market (1986, p. 25). In the next twenty years the most important expected change is in the kinds of jobs that women hold (Galagan, 1986, p. 4). One change already in place is a sharp increase in the number of women in management. From 1970-1985, the proportion of women in management nearly doubled. In fact, close to one-third of management positions are filled by women ( Why Women Get the Jobs, 1986, p. 14). Despite these numbers, few women make it beyond entry-level positions. Women are seriously underrepresented in administrative management, filling only 5-10% of top executive positions (Bloom, 1986, p. 27). Earnings of women managers reflect this underrepresentation in high level management. Typically, many of the managerial positions filled by women are dead-end, removed from a firm\u27s centers of power and profit (Stead, 1985, p. 24). Although starting salaries are roughly equivalent for males and females, female salaries lag in later years. Two studies show that four to ten years after receiving an MBA, women earn about 80% as much as men with the same number of years of experience (Stephan, 1987, p. 38). On average, women managers earn about half as much as male managers (Stead, 1985, p. 25). Why do so few women break into upper level management jobs? This article will explore this question along with some prospects for increasing the number of women in executive management

Patterns of phylogeography and vicariance of Chamaerops humilis L. (Palmae)

Chamaerops humilis L. is 1 of 2 native palms occurring in Europe and the only native palm in the West Mediterranean region. Our aims were: (1) to describe its phylogeographic structure; (2) to infer a biogeographic scenario to explain its present distribution; and (3) to assess changes in its distribution from the last interglacial period. Twenty-two populations were sampled. An amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis produced 226 fragments, which allowed recognition of 4 groups of populations: (1) E Iberian Peninsula plus Al Hoceima (NE Morocco), the Balearics, and Sardinia; (2) France, the Italian Peninsula, and Sicily; (3) SW Iberian Peninsula and NW Morocco; and (4) S Morocco (var. argentea André; the first 3 groups are currently included in var. humilis). The phylogenetic information and molecular clock-related estimates, combined with geological and fossil history from the Eocene to present, suggest that C. humilis occurred in Central Europe in the Tertiary, reaching (1) Spain and (2) Italy, with expansion from here across North Africa to (3) N Morocco and S Spain, and (4) S Morocco. Climatic changes may also help explain the fragmented current distribution of this species. The groups of populations are sufficiently genetically distinct to recommend conservation of at least some populations in each region.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia de España CGL2005- 01951Secretaría General de Universidades, Investigación y Tecnología.
