A new standard security policy language
Some of the significant factors that led to the introduction of a new standard security policy language (SSPL) as a tool to help security officers write security policies in a standard format are discussed. The need for automation systems that increased due to more attacks along with continuous change and increase in organizational policies to keep assets secured were some of these factors that to led to the creation of the SSPL. The language facilitated the task of the automation systems and increased the need for a policy tracking tool of defined policies within the organization along with their existing configurations. It included a formal policy statement, scale and domain, descriptive, and extensible languages. The proposed SSPL also covered the intended features from the security policy language. It represented policy as a serialized policy object, while each object encapsulated policy structure and configuration
Fog-Based CDN Framework for Minimizing Latency of Web Services Using Fog-Based HTTP Browser
Cloud computing has been a dominant computing paradigm for many years. It provides applications with computing, storage, and networking capabilities. Furthermore, it enhances the scalability and quality of service (QoS) of applications and offers the better utilization of resources. Recently, these advantages of cloud computing have deteriorated in quality. Cloud services have been affected in terms of latency and QoS due to the high streams of data produced by many Internet of Things (IoT) devices, smart machines, and other computing devices joining the network, which in turn affects network capabilities. Content delivery networks (CDNs) previously provided a partial solution for content retrieval, availability, and resource download time. CDNs rely on the geographic distribution of cloud servers to provide better content reachability. CDNs are perceived as a network layer near cloud data centers. Recently, CDNs began to perceive the same degradations of QoS due to the same factors. Fog computing fills the gap between cloud services and consumers by bringing cloud capabilities close to end devices. Fog computing is perceived as another network layer near end devices. The adoption of the CDN model in fog computing is a promising approach to providing better QoS and latency for cloud services. Therefore, a fog-based CDN framework capable of reducing the load time of web services was proposed in this paper. To evaluate our proposed framework and provide a complete set of tools for its use, a fog-based browser was developed. We showed that our proposed fog-based CDN framework improved the load time of web pages compared to the results attained through the use of the traditional CDN. Different experiments were conducted with a simple network topology against six websites with different content sizes along with a different number of fog nodes at different network distances. The results of these experiments show that with a fog-based CDN framework offloading autonomy, latency can be reduced by 85% and enhance the user experience of websites
Sentiment-Based Spatiotemporal Prediction Framework for Pandemic Outbreaks Awareness Using Social Networks Data Classification
According to the World Health Organization, several factors have affected the accurate reporting of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak status, such as limited data collection resources, cultural and educational diversity, and inconsistent outbreak reporting from different sectors. Driven by this challenging situation, this study investigates the potential expediency of using social network data to develop reliable early information surveillance and warning system for pandemic outbreaks. As such, an enhanced framework of three inherently interlinked subsystems is proposed. The first subsystem includes data collection and integration mechanisms, data preprocessing, and hybrid sentiment analysis tools to identify tweet sentiment taxonomies and quantitatively estimate public awareness. The second subsystem comprises the feature extraction unit that identifies, selects, embeds, and balances feature vectors and the classifier fitting and training unit. This subsystem is designed to capture the most effective linguistic feature combinations with more spatial evidence by using a variety of approaches, including linear classifiers, MLPs, RNNs, and CNNs, as well as pre-trained word embedding algorithms. The last is the modeling and situational awareness evaluation subsystem, which measures temporal associations between pandemic-relevant social network activities and officially announced infection counts in the most hazardous geolocations. The proposed framework was developed and tested using a combination of static datasets and real-time scraped Twitter data. The results of these experiments showed the remarkable performance of the framework in assessing the temporal associations between public awareness and outbreak status. It also showed that the Decision Tree Classifier with Unigram+TF-IDF feature vectors outperformed other conventional models for sentiment classification and geolocation classification with an accuracy of 94.3% and 80.8, respectively. As indicated, conventional machine learning algorithms didn’t achieve a precision of more than 80%, while, for instance, MLP with self-embedding layer, Word2Vec, and GloVe pre-trained word embedding resulted in very poor accuracy of 10%, 36%, and 32%, respectively. However, adding the PoS tag one-hot encoding embedding increased the validation accuracy from 36% to approximately 89%, while the best performance for the second subsystem was achieved by Bi-LSTM with RoBERTa word embedding, with an accuracy of 96%. The achieved results reveal that the proposed framework can proactively capture the potential hazards associated with the prevalence of infectious diseases as an effective early detection and info-surveillance awareness system
Biofabrication of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle from Ochradenus baccatus
Biofilms are complex aggregation of cells that are embedded in EPS matrix. These microcolonies are highly resistant to drugs and are associated with various diseases. Biofilms have greatly affected the food safety by causing severe losses due to food contamination and spoilage. Therefore, novel antibiofilm agents are needed. This study investigates the antibiofilm and protein binding activity of zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) synthesized from leaf extract of Ochradenus baccatus. Standard physical techniques, including UV-visible spectroscopy Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, were used to characterize the synthesized OB-ZnNPs. Synthesized OB-ZnNPs demonstrated significant biofilm inhibition in human and food-borne pathogens (Chromobacterium violaceum, Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia marcescens, and Listeria monocytogenes) at subinhibitory concentrations. OB-ZnNPs significantly reduced the virulence factors like violacein, prodigiosin, and alginate and impaired swarming migration and EPS production. OB-ZnNPs demonstrated efficient binding with HSA protein and no change in their structure or stability was observed. In addition, in vivo toxicity evaluation confirmed that OB-ZnNPs possessed no serious toxic effect even at higher doses. Moreover, they were found to have excellent antioxidant properties that can be employed in the fields of food safety and medicine. Hence, it is envisaged that the OB-ZnNPs can be used as potential nanomaterials to combat drug resistant bacterial infections and prevent contamination/spoilage of food
