Reconstructing the Engram: Simultaneous, Multisite, Many Single Neuron Recordings
AbstractLittle is known about the physiological principles that govern large-scale neuronal interactions in the mammalian brain. Here, we describe an electrophysiological paradigm capable of simultaneously recording the extracellular activity of large populations of single neurons, distributed across multiple cortical and subcortical structures in behaving and anesthetized animals. Up to 100 neurons were simultaneously recorded after 48 microwires were implanted in the brain stem, thalamus, and somatosensory cortex of rats. Overall, 86% of the implanted microwires yielded single neurons, and an average of 2.3 neurons were discriminated per microwire. Our population recordings remained stable for weeks, demonstrating that this method can be employed to investigate the dynamic and distributed neuronal ensemble interactions that underlie processes such as sensory perception, motor control, and sensorimotor learning in freely behaving animals
Cholesterol-lowering action of a novel nutraceutical combination in uremic rats: Insights into the molecular mechanism in a hepatoma cell line
Appropriate nutraceutical combinations may represent a valid approach to prevent vascular calcification associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In the present study, we tested the effect of a new nutraceutical combination named RenaTris®, containing MK-7, magnesium carbonate, and Sucrosomial® Iron, on vascular calcification in uremic rats. Rats were randomly divided into three groups, i.e. control (high-phosphate diet), uremic (high-phosphate diet containing 0.5% adenine), and supplemented uremic diet (0.5% adenine, MK-7, magnesium carbonate, and Sucrosomial® Iron). After six weeks, sera and vascular calcification were examined. The uremic diet increased creatinine and phosphate levels and induced extensive vascular calcification. The uremic condition also induced a mild hypercholesterolemic condition (+52% of total cholesterol; p < 0.05). The supplemented uremic diet did not reduce creatinine, phosphate levels, or vascular calcification, however, we observed a significant hypocholesterolemic effect (−18.9% in supplemental uremic vs. uremic diet; p < 0.05). Similar to simvastatin, incubation of cultured human hepatoma cells (Huh7) with MK-7 significantly reduced cholesterol biosynthesis (−38%) and induced 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase and low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) at both mRNA and protein levels. The effect of MK-7 on LDLR was counteracted by the co-incubation with squalene. Unlike simvastatin, MK-7 reduced PCSK9 in Huh7. These results indicated that the new nutraceutical combination significantly impacts cholesterol metabolism and its supplementation may help to control mild hypercholesterolemic conditions in CKD patients
Inclusive J/ψ production at forward and backward rapidity in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV
Inclusive J/psi production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass
energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sqrt(s_NN) = 8.16TeV, using the ALICE detector at the
CERN LHC. The J/psi meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centre-of-mass
rapidity intervals 2.03 < ycms < 3.53 and -4.46 < ycms < -2.96, where positive
and negative ycms refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse
momentum coverage is pT < 20 GeV/c. In this paper, ycms- and pT-differential cross
sections for inclusive J/psi production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification
factors RpPb are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/psi yield with
respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region pT < 5 GeV/c. At backward rapidity
no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements
by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally,
the ratios RFB between forward- and backward-ycms RpPb values are shown and discussed
Systematic study of flow vector fluctuations in √SNN=5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions
Measurements of the pT-dependent flow vector fluctuations in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV using azimuthal correlations with the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. A four-particle correlation approach [ALICE Collaboration, Phys. Rev. C 107, L051901 (2023)2469-998510.1103/PhysRevC.107.L051901] is used to quantify the effects of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations separately. This paper extends previous studies to additional centrality intervals and provides measurements of the pT-dependent flow vector fluctuations at sNN=5.02TeV with two-particle correlations. Significant pT-dependent fluctuations of the V - 2 flow vector in Pb-Pb collisions are found across different centrality ranges, with the largest fluctuations of up to ∼15% being present in the 5% most central collisions. In parallel, no evidence of significant pT-dependent fluctuations of V - 3 or V - 4 is found. Additionally, evidence of flow angle and magnitude fluctuations is observed with more than 5σ significance in central collisions. These observations in Pb-Pb collisions indicate where the classical picture of hydrodynamic modeling with a common symmetry plane breaks down. This has implications for hard probes at high pT, which might be biased by pT-dependent flow angle fluctuations of at least 23% in central collisions. Given the presented results, existing theoretical models should be reexamined to improve our understanding of initial conditions, quark-gluon plasma properties, and the dynamic evolution of the created system
Energy dependence and fluctuations of anisotropic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 and 2.76 TeV
Measurements of anisotropic flow coefficients with two- and multi-particle cumulants
for inclusive charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 5.02 and 2.76TeV
are reported in the pseudorapidity range |eta|< 0.8 and transverse momentum 0.2 < pT <
50 GeV/c. The full data sample collected by the ALICE detector in 2015 (2010), corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 12.7 (2.0) ub^-1 in the centrality range 0-80%,
is analysed. Flow coefficients up to the sixth flow harmonic (v6) are reported and a detailed
comparison among results at the two energies is carried out. The pT dependence
of anisotropic flow coefficients and its evolution with respect to centrality and harmonic
number n are investigated. An approximate power-law scaling of the form vn(pT) ~ pT^(n/3)
is observed for all flow harmonics at low pT (0.2 < pT < 3 GeV/c). At the same time, the
ratios vn/vm^(n/m) are observed to be essentially independent of pT for most centralities up to
about pT = 10 GeV/c. Analysing the differences among higher-order cumulants of elliptic flow (v2),
which have different sensitivities to flow fluctuations, a measurement of the standardised
skewness of the event-by-event v2 distribution P(v2) is reported and constraints
on its higher moments are provided. The Elliptic Power distribution is used to parametrise
P(v2), extracting its parameters from fits to cumulants. The measurements are compared
to different model predictions in order to discriminate among initial-state models and to
constrain the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity to entropy-density ratio

Measurements of inclusive J/ψ production at midrapidity and forward rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV
The measurements of the inclusive J/ψ yield at midrapidity (|y|<0.9) and forward rapidity (2.5 < 4) in Pb–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The inclusive J/ψ production yields and nuclear modification factors, RAA, are measured as a function of the collision centrality, J/ψ transverse momentum (pT), and rapidity. The J/ψ average transverse momentum and squared transverse momentum (〈pT〉 and 〈pT2〉) are evaluated as a function of the centrality at midrapidity. Compared to the previous ALICE publications, here the entire Pb–Pb collisions dataset collected during the LHC Run 2 is used, which improves the precision of the measurements and extends the pT coverage. The pT-integrated RAA shows a hint of an increasing trend towards unity from semicentral to central collisions at midrapidity, while it is flat at forward rapidity. The pT-differential RAA shows a strong suppression at high pT with less suppression at low pT where it reaches a larger value at midrapidity compared to forward rapidity. The ratio of the pT-integrated yields of J/ψ to those of D0 mesons is reported for the first time for the central and semicentral event classes at midrapidity. Model calculations implementing charmonium production via the coalescence of charm quarks and antiquarks during the fireball evolution (transport models) or in a statistical approach with thermal weights are in good agreement with the data at low pT. At higher pT, the data are well described by transport models and a model based on energy loss in the strongly-interacting medium produced in nuclear collisions at the LHC
Photoproduction of K+ K- Pairs in Ultraperipheral Collisions
K+K- pairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproduced φ(1020) mesons or directly as nonresonant K+K- pairs. Measurements of K+K- photoproduction probe the couplings between the φ(1020) and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of K+K- pairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct K+K- production. There is significant K+K- production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range 1.1<1.4 GeV/c2 above the φ(1020) resonance, for rapidity |yKK|<0.8 and pT,KK<0.1 GeV/c, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is dσ/dy=3.37±0.61(stat)±0.15(syst) mb. The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system WγPb,n ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for φ(1020) photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of φ(1020) decays, direct K+K- photoproduction, and interference between the two.
