Time Evolving Photo Ionisation Device (TEPID): a novel code for out-of-equilibrium gas ionisation
Photoionisation is one of the main mechanisms at work in the gaseous
environment of bright astrophysical sources. Many information on the gas
physics, chemistry and kinematics, as well as on the ionising source itself,
can be gathered through optical to X-ray spectroscopy. While several public
time equilibrium photoionisation codes are readily available and can be used to
infer average gas properties at equilibrium, time-evolving photoionisation
models have only very recently started to become available. They are needed
when the ionising source varies faster than the typical gas equilibration
timescale. Indeed, using equilibrium models to analyse spectra of
non-equilibrium gas may lead to inaccurate results and prevents a solid
assessment of the gas density, physics and geometry. We present our novel
Time-Evolving PhotoIonisation Device (TEPID), which self-consistently solves
time evolving photoionisation equations (thermal and ionisation balance) and
follows the response of the gas to changes of the ionising source. The code can
be applied to a variety of astrophysical scenarios and produces time-resolved
gas absorption spectra to fit the data. To describe the main features of TEPID,
we apply it to two dramatically different astrophysical scenarios: a typical
ionised absorber observed in the X-ray spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (e.g.
Warm Absorbers and UFOs) and the circumburst environment of a Gamma-Ray Burst.
In both cases, the gas energy and ionisation balances vary as a function of
time, gas density and distance from the ionising source. Time evolving
ionisation leads to unique ionisation patterns which cannot be reproduced by
stationary codes when the gas is out of equilibrium. This demonstrates the need
for codes such as TEPID in view of the up-coming high-resolution X-ray

A hot cocoon in the ultralong GRB 130925A: hints of a PopIII-like progenitor in a low density wind environment
GRB 130925A is a peculiar event characterized by an extremely long gamma-ray
duration (7 ks), as well as dramatic flaring in the X-rays for
20 ks. After this period, its X-ray afterglow shows an atypical soft
spectrum with photon index 4, as observed by Swift and Chandra,
until s, when XMM-Newton observations uncover a harder spectral
shape with 2.5, commonly observed in GRB afterglows. We find that
two distinct emission components are needed to explain the X-ray observations:
a thermal component, which dominates the X-ray emission for several weeks, and
a non-thermal component, consistent with a typical afterglow. A forward shock
model well describes the broadband (from radio to X-rays) afterglow spectrum at
various epochs. It requires an ambient medium with a very low density wind
profile, consistent with that expected from a low-metallicity blue supergiant
(BSG). The thermal component has a remarkably constant size and a total energy
consistent with those expected by a hot cocoon surrounding the relativistic
jet. We argue that the features observed in this GRB (its ultralong duration,
the thermal cocoon, and the low density wind environment) are associated with a
low metallicity BSG progenitor and, thus, should characterize the class of

Suitability of linear scoring in meat sheep: the practical case of Merinizzata Italiana breed
Linear scoring is widely applied in domestic animal species, mainly in cattle and horses. There are only few cases of linear scoring in sheep, probably because the small body size and the narrow range of the classes make difficult to correctly evaluate the measures. In this paper the results of a linear scoring test carried out on Merinizzata Italiana sheep breed in order to verify the feasibility of this method in sheep, are reported. Twenty untrained people, with three different levels of scoring experience in meat sheep morphology, evaluated 52 pluriparous ewes for body length, chest circumference, chest width, rump height, rump width, and withers height; to check for misclassification, their scores were compared with a reference score, previously obtained measuring the same animals by the suitable tools (measuring tape and a Lydtin stick). The percentage of correct scoring ranged from 44.4% for body length to 61.8% for withers height, and was not affected by the experience of the judge. In all characters, the distance of the class from the trait mean had a significant effect in increasing the intensity of misclassifications; the judge's experience showed a positive effect in reducing the intensity of the misclassification for body length, that was the hardest trait to score. These results encourage to further verifying in practice the linear scoring in the Merinizzata Italiana sheep and in other meat breeds
A Comparative Study of the X-Ray Afterglow Properties of Optically Bright and Dark Gamma-Ray Bursts
We have examined the complete set of X-ray afterglow observations of dark and optically bright gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) performed by BeppoSAX through 2001 February. X-ray afterglows are detected in ~90% of the cases. We do not find significant differences in the X-ray spectral shape, in particular no increased X-ray absorption in GRBs without optical transient (dark GRBs) compared to GRBs with optical transient (OTGRBs). Rather, we find that the 1.6-10 keV flux of OTGRBs is on average about 5 times larger than that of the dark GRBs. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that this difference is significant at 99.8% probability. Under the assumption that dark and OTGRBs have similar spectra, this could suggest that the first are uncaught in the optical band because they are just faint sources. In order to test this hypothesis, we have determined the optical-to-X-ray flux ratios of the sample. OTGRBs show a remarkably narrow distribution of flux ratios, which corresponds to an average optical-to-X-ray spectral index = 0.794 ? 0.054. We find that, while 75% of dark GRBs have flux ratio upper limits still consistent with those of OT GRBs, the remaining 25% are 4-10 times weaker in optical than in X-rays. The significance of this result is ?2.6 ?. If this subpopulation of dark GRBs were constituted by objects assimilable to OTGRBs, they should have shown optical fluxes higher than upper limits actually found. We discuss the possible causes of their behavior, including a possible occurrence in high-density clouds or origin at very high redshift and a connection with ancient, Population III stars
vacuolar sorting mechanisms are differently influenced by detoxification processes
Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide that inhibits the shikimate pathway's enzyme EPSPS (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase) preventing the production of aromatic amino acids. This herbicide is largely used and appreciated because it controls a wide range of annual and perennial weeds but it has a minimal environmental impact when compared with other herbicides. Initially it was thought that resistance to glyphosate was not easy to evolve but the continuous applications, as it happened for other herbicides, have induced the development of several glyphosate-resistant weeds. Glyphosate resistance can be developed as target-site and non-target-site mechanisms. In the target-site mechanism of resistance, either a mutation on the EPSPS enzyme (enzyme modification) or the overexpression of the EPSPS enzyme have been found to confer resistance. In the non-target-site mechanism of glyphosate resistance, the herbicide translocation and neutralization is observed. Pumping glyphosate into vacuoles via membrane transporters has been suggested as a possible process involved in the restricted glyphosate translocation. As a consequence, a different vacuolar organization or plasticity could be an interesting character or marker to correlate to glyphosate resistance. Vacuolar markers AleuGFP (Sar1 dependent sorting) or GFPChi (Sar1 independent sorting) respectively can be used to monitor independent vacuolar sorting mechanisms during glyphosate induced stress. We observed that the adaptive reaction of tobacco protoplasts vacuolar system to the treatment with glyphosate, can be mimicked by the overexpression of a Triticum durum TdGST gene. Previous analysis evidenced that the herbicide glyphosate increased TdGST expression, confirming the role of GST in the protection against xenobiotics. Non-target-site glyphosate resistance mechanisms may correlate with an independent regulation of cell compartmentalization and herbicide induced genes may have a direct effect on it

The scope of this management plan (MP) is to describe the management of the Italian team in the ATHENA space mission and to clarify roles and responsibilities within the Italian team.
Objective of this document is to provide a structured and consistent approach to the Italian management of the ATHENA project to be compliant with the ESA programmatic development.
This MP considers all the project management activities that are addressed by the ESA standard ECSS-M-ST-10C “Space project management” in the framework of the Italian Collaboration in the ATHENA mission.

BeppoSAX Observations of GRB980425: Detection of the Prompt Event and Monitoring of the Error Box
We present BeppoSAX follow-up observations of GRB980425 obtained with the Narrow Field Instruments (NFI) in April, May, and November 1998. The first NFI observation has detected within the 8' radius error box of the GRB an X-ray source positionally consistent with the supernova 1998bw, which exploded within a day of GRB980425, and a fainter X-ray source, not consistent with the position of the supernova. The former source is detected in the following NFI pointings and exhibits a decline of a factor of two in six months. If it is associated with SN 1998bw, this is the first detection of X-ray emission from a Type I supernova above 2 keV. The latter source exhibits only marginally significant variability. The X-ray spectra and variability of the supernova are compared with thermal and non-thermal models of supernova high energy emission. Based on the BeppoSAX data, it is not possible to firmly establish which of the two detected sources is the GRB X-ray counterpart, although probability considerations favor the supernova
