Modelling background charge rearrangements near single-electron transistors as a Poisson process
Background charge rearrangements in metallic single-electron transistors are
modelled in two-level tunnelling systems as a Poisson process with a scale
parameter as only variable. The model explains the recent observation of
asymmetric Coulomb blockade peak spacing distributions in metallic
single-electron transistors. From the scale parameter we estimate the average
size of the tunnelling systems, their density of states, and the height of
their energy barrier. We conclude that the observed background charge
rearrangements predominantly take place in the substrate of the single-electron

Properties and occurrence rates of exoplanet candidates as a function of host star metallicity from the DR25 catalog
Correlations between the occurrence rate of exoplanets and their host star
properties provide important clues about the planet formation processes. We
studied the dependence of the observed properties of exoplanets (radius, mass,
and orbital period) as a function of their host star metallicity. We analyzed
the planetary radii and orbital periods of over 2800 candidates from
the latest data release DR25 (Q1-Q17) with revised planetary radii
based on ~DR2 as a function of host star metallicity (from the Q1-Q17
(DR25) stellar and planet catalog). With a much larger sample and improved
radius measurements, we are able to reconfirm previous results in the
literature. We show that the average metallicity of the host star increases as
the radius of the planet increases. We demonstrate this by first calculating
the average host star metallicity for different radius bins and then
supplementing these results by calculating the occurrence rate as a function of
planetary radius and host star metallicity. We find a similar trend between
host star metallicity and planet mass: the average host star metallicity
increases with increasing planet mass. This trend, however, reverses for masses
: host star metallicity drops with increasing planetary
mass. We further examined the correlation between the host star metallicity and
the orbital period of the planet. We find that for planets with orbital periods
less than 10 days, the average metallicity of the host star is higher than that

Estimativa dos valores de saldo de radiação e fluxo de calor no solo em diferentes condições antrópicas na bacia do rio Ji-Paraná, Rondônia.
Use change and land cover has significant influence on energy flows. Thus, this study aimed to compare the net radiation and soil heat flux on two dates, 19/07/1984 and 25/06/2010 from a locality of river basin Ji-Paraná, Rondônia. To develop the study, an algorithm Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) allowing the estimation of energy flows according to the cover. The model was applied in the study area in a sequence of steps, where the outcome of interest was the net radiation at the surface and the flow of heat in the soil. The results show that on average the net radiation was greater in the scene where the predominant areas of forest, 19/07/1984, since the albedo of the vegetation is lower than in surface of bare ground or with less dense vegetation as observed in the scene 25/06/2010. The values of soil heat flux are larger at the scene of 25/06/2010 and occupy a larger surface due to human action. This shows that the replacement of forest for agriculture, grazing and urbanization are causing decrease the net radiation and increase the flow of heat in the soil, thereby increasing the emission of long wave radiation that affect the surface temperature, air temperature and the hydrological cycle

Mismatch-based delayed thrombolysis: a meta-analysis
<p><b>Background and Purpose</b>: Clinical benefit from thrombolysis is reduced as stroke onset to treatment time increases. The use of "mismatch" imaging to identify patients for delayed treatment has face validity and has been used in case series and clinical trials. We undertook a meta-analysis of relevant trials to examine whether present evidence supports delayed thrombolysis among patients selected according to mismatch criteria.</p>
<p><b>Methods</b>: We collated outcome data for patients who were enrolled after 3 hours of stroke onset in thrombolysis trials and had mismatch on pretreatment imaging. We selected the trials on the basis of a systematic search of the Web of Knowledge. We compared favorable outcome, reperfusion and/or recanalization, mortality, and symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage between the thrombolyzed and nonthrombolyzed groups of patients and the probability of a favorable outcome among patients with successful reperfusion and clinical findings for 3 to 6 versus 6 to 9 hours from poststroke onset. Results are expressed as adjusted odds ratios (a-ORs) with 95% CIs. Heterogeneity was explored by test statistics for clinical heterogeneity, I2 (inconsistency), and L’Abbé plot.</p>
<p><b>Results</b>: We identified articles describing the DIAS, DIAS II, DEDAS, DEFUSE, and EPITHET trials, giving a total of 502 mismatch patients thrombolyzed beyond 3 hours. The combined a-ORs for favorable outcomes were greater for patients who had successful reperfusion (a-OR=5.2; 95% CI, 3 to 9; I2=0%). Favorable clinical outcome was not significantly improved by thrombolysis (a-OR=1.3; 95% CI, 0.8 to 2.0; I2=20.9%). Odds for reperfusion/recanalization were increased among patients who received thrombolytic therapy (a-OR=3.0; 95% CI, 1.6 to 5.8; I2=25.7%). The combined data showed a significant increase in mortality after thrombolysis (a-OR=2.4; 95% CI, 1.2 to 4.9; I2=0%), but this was not confirmed when we excluded data from desmoteplase doses that were abandoned in clinical development (a-OR=1.6; 95% CI, 0.7 to 3.7; I2=0%). Symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage was significantly increased after thrombolysis (a-OR=6.5; 95% CI, 1.2 to 35.4; I2=0%) but not significant after exclusion of abandoned doses of desmoteplase (a-OR=5.4; 95% CI, 0.9 to 31.8; I2=0%).</p>
<p><b>Conclusions</b>: Delayed thrombolysis amongst patients selected according to mismatch imaging is associated with increased reperfusion/recanalization. Recanalization/reperfusion is associated with improved outcomes. However, delayed thrombolysis in mismatch patients was not confirmed to improve clinical outcome, although a useful clinical benefit remains possible. Thrombolysis carries a significant risk of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage and possibly increased mortality. Criteria to diagnose mismatch are still evolving. Validation of the mismatch selection paradigm is required with a phase III trial. Pending these results, delayed treatment, even according to mismatch selection, cannot be recommended as part of routine care.</p>
Near-Infrared, Adaptive Optics Observations of the T Tauri Multiple-Star System
With high-angular-resolution, near-infrared observations of the young stellar
object T Tauri at the end of 2002, we show that, contrary to previous reports,
none of the three infrared components of T Tau coincide with the compact radio
source that has apparently been ejected recently from the system (Loinard,
Rodriguez, and Rodriguez 2003). The compact radio source and one of the three
infrared objects, T Tau Sb, have distinct paths that depart from orbital or
uniform motion between 1997 and 2000, perhaps indicating that their interaction
led to the ejection of the radio source. The path that T Tau Sb took between
1997 and 2003 may indicate that this star is still bound to the presumably more
massive southern component, T Tau Sa. The radio source is absent from our
near-infrared images and must therefore be fainter than K = 10.2 (if located
within 100 mas of T Tau Sb, as the radio data would imply), still consistent

Neste trabalho foi desenvolvido um projeto completo para a produção mensal de 30.000 plantas de alface em casa de vegetação, através da técnica de hidroponia NFT. Elaborou-se também a análise econômica do projeto contemplando os investimentos necessários e seus custos operacionais. Com a finalidade de avaliar o impacto do desmatamento na evapotranspiração diária nas bacias dos rios Ji-Paraná e Urupá em Rondônia, foi utilizado o algoritmo Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (Sebal). Tal algoritmo foi sensível às mudanças ocorridas no uso do solo nos últimos 25 anos na área de estudo e mostrou que as áreas onde a floresta foi substituída por agricultura e pastagens apresentaram redução de 33 % na evapotranspiração diária
Probing stellar accretion with mid-infrared hydrogen lines
In this paper we investigate the origin of the mid-infrared (IR) hydrogen
recombination lines for a sample of 114 disks in different evolutionary stages
(full, transitional and debris disks) collected from the {\it Spitzer} archive.
We focus on the two brighter {H~{\sc i}} lines observed in the {\it Spitzer}
spectra, the {H~{\sc i}}(7-6) at 12.37m and the {H~{\sc i}}(9-7) at
11.32m. We detect the {H~{\sc i}}(7-6) line in 46 objects, and the {H~{\sc
i}}(9-7) in 11. We compare these lines with the other most common gas line
detected in {\it Spitzer} spectra, the {[Ne~{\sc iii}]} at 12.81m. We
argue that it is unlikely that the {H~{\sc i}} emission originates from the
photoevaporating upper surface layers of the disk, as has been found for the
{[Ne~{\sc iii}]} lines toward low-accreting stars. Using the {H~{\sc
i}}(9-7)/{H~{\sc i}}(7-6) line ratios we find these gas lines are likely
probing gas with hydrogen column densities of 10-10~cm.
The subsample of objects surrounded by full and transitional disks show a
positive correlation between the accretion luminosity and the {H~{\sc i}} line
luminosity. These two results suggest that the observed mid-IR {H~{\sc i}}
lines trace gas accreting onto the star in the same way as other hydrogen
recombination lines at shorter wavelengths. A pure chromospheric origin of
these lines can be excluded for the vast majority of full and transitional
disks.We report for the first time the detection of the {H~{\sc i}}(7-6) line
in eight young (< 20~Myr) debris disks. A pure chromospheric origin cannot be
ruled out in these objects. If the {H~{\sc i}}(7-6) line traces accretion in
these older systems, as in the case of full and transitional disks, the
strength of the emission implies accretion rates lower than
10M/yr. We discuss some advantages of extending accretion
indicators to longer wavelengths
