    Translators invariant under hyperpolar actions

In this paper, we consider translators (for the mean curvature flow) given by a graph of a function on a symmetric space G/KG/K of compact type which is invariant under a hyperpolar action on G/KG/K. First, in the case of G/K=SO(n+1)/SO(n)G/K=SO(n+1)/SO(n), SU(n+1)/S(U(1)×U(n))SU(n+1)/S(U(1)\times U(n)), Sp(n+1)/(Sp(1)×Sp(n))Sp(n+1)/(Sp(1)\times Sp(n)) or F4/Spin(9)F_4/{\rm Spin}(9), we classify the shapes of translators in G/K×RG/K\times\mathbb R given by the graphs of functions on G/KG/K which are invariant under the isotropy action K↷G/KK\curvearrowright G/K. Next, in the case where G/KG/K is of higher rank, we investigate translators in G/K×RG/K\times\mathbb R given by the graphs of functions on G/KG/K which are invariant under a hyperpolar action H↷G/KH\curvearrowright G/K of cohomogeneity two.Comment: 19 page

Hardness analysis of metallic particles in ordinary chondrites

    Get PDF
Mechanical properties of metallic particles in four shock-melted and seven unshocked ordinary chondrites were studied by means of the Micro Vickers Hardness Measurement. Together with the morphological and mineralogical properties, they were used to characterize the shock effects in the chondrites. Average value of hardness in Fe-Ni particles is smaller (less hard) than that of troilite. Average values of hardness of taenite particles in Y-790964 (LL) and Y-75258 (LL6) are 144 and 348kg/mm^2,respectively. The hardness increases as the Ni content increases. However, the range of hardness values in Fe-Ni particles shows little systematic changes with the petrologic type. The fractal dimension of two-dimensional shape of metallic particles was measured by the personal-computer-aided image processing system. The Vickers hardness varies in some systematic way. In shock-melted LL chondrites, when the amount of vesicles increases, the average of hardness decreases. Shock effects are heterogeneous even on a microscopic scale, and irregular grains (with higher values of the fractal dimension) seem to show shock effects more strongly

Thermal diffusivity measurement of rock-forming minerals from 300° to 1100°K

Measurement of thermal diffusivity, K, of fused silica, quartz, olivine, periclase, jadeite, garnet, spinel, corundum and alkali feldspar was made at 1‐atm pressure and over the temperature range from 300° to 1100°K. All the samples are of gem quality but of millimeter size. The Ångström method was slightly modified to be applicable to small samples. For all the minerals except feldspar 1/Îș increases almost linearly with temperature up to 700°K, as expected from the theory of lattice conduction. Tightly packed minerals, such as periclase, spinel, and corundum, have a diffusivity 3 to 10 times as large as that of other minerals. At temperatures higher than 700°K, 1/Îș decreases with temperature for some minerals. This decrease can be interpreted as being due to radiative heat transfer within the crystals, if the opacity of the minerals is in the range 6 to 20 cm^(−1). High‐temperature optical data are essential for a detailed discussion of the radiation effect

The pressure and temperature variations of thermal diffusivity of poly crystalline Mg_2SiO_4 have been measured for the range 24 to 50 kb and 400° to 1300°K. Effect of the olivine‐spinel phase transition on thermal diffusivity of Fe_2SiO_4 was studied at 48.5 kb for the temperature range 350° to 650°K. Synthetic samples with grain size 1 to 5 microns were used. For the pressure range studied, the reciprocal of thermal diffusivity 1/Îș of Mg_2SiO_4 increases almost linearly with temperature up to about 1200°K, as expected from the theory of phonon conduction, but is nearly constant above that temperature. The 1/Îș versus temperature curve of Fe_2SiO_4 (olivine) is nearly straight up to 700°K, where it becomes slightly convex. The thermal diffusivity of NaCl is measured under similar conditions for comparison with Bridgman's data. The agreement is reasonably good. The pressure derivative ∂Îș/∂P, at P = 40 kb is 1.8 × 10^)−4) cm^2/sec kb (at 700°K) and 0.8 × 10^(−4) cm^2/sec kb (at 1100°K) for Mg_2SiO_4, and 4.7 × 10^(−4) cm^2/sec kb (at 700°K) for NaCl. This pressure dependence can be explained by the theory of phonon conduction. The thermal diffusivity of Fe_2SiO_4 (spinel) is about 1.5 times that of Fe_2SiO_4 (olivine) over the range 350° to 650°K. The effect of radiative heat transfer in Mg_2SiO_4 is discussed. The photon mean free path is estimated to be 0.3 mm at 1400°K

A retrospective study of the PROLENE hernia system comparedwith the mesh-plug technique

To compare the results of the PROLENE hernia system (PHS) and mesh-plug technique (MPT), a retrospective study of adult patients with inguinal hernia was performed. The total number of inguinal herniorrhaphies for the past 9 years was 376, and the numbers of operative treatments by PHS, MPT and the Bassini procedure were 79, 291 and 6, respectively. There were no significant differences either in the operating time or the hospitalization days. No postoperative complications were observed in the PHS group; however, 8 complications were found among the 291 cases (2.75 %) of the MPT group (hematoma, 3 ; seroma, 2 ; testitis, 1 ; mesh infection, 2). Out of the total 376 cases, the number of initial and recurrence cases was 355 and 21, respectively, and out of the 21 recurrence cases the number of initial surgeries by Bassini and MPT was 14 and 7, respectively. Among the 21 recurrence cases there were no recurrences after PHS

A surgical case of small intestinal anisakiasis with symptoms of ileus

We report a surgical case of intestinal anisakiasis in which we identified a complete larva. A 48-year-old man complaining of epigastralgia after eating roasted mackerel was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of ileus with peritonitis. Abdominal CT showed dilatation and partial thickening of the small intestine. An emergency operation was carried out. On laparotomy, severe stricture of the jejunum was revealed. The affected intestine was resected. A larva whose head was invading the mucosa was found in the resected portion of the jejunum, and we diagnosed the case as intestinal anisakiasis

Perceptions and attitudes of users and non-users of mental health services concerning mental illness and services in Japan

ObjectivesThere is a global movement to develop and implement community-based integrated mental health systems. The present study attempted to clarify the perceptions and attitudes of users and non-users of mental health services concerning mental illness and services in Japan.MethodsA new questionnaire was developed for this internet survey. Data from 500 outpatients with depression and 500 healthy subjects were sampled according to the demographics of the Japanese population.ResultsOver 90% of healthy subjects and over 70% of patients were unaware of the common age of onset or lifetime prevalence of mental illness. Over 90% of the healthy subjects and about 70% of the patients could not describe any services where they would feel comfortable discussing mental health problems. In both groups, “adolescents and young adults” were ranked first as a target population for mental health and illness policies. The top requirement for the integrated care systems was the promotion and awareness of correct knowledge of mental illness in both the healthy subjects and patients.ConclusionSocietal requirements could include disseminating correct knowledge, awareness-raising actions for society, and implementing services where people, especially young people, can easily consult and receive support in the community
