A 320 k-year record of microparticles in the Dome Fuji, Antarctica ice core measured by laser-light scattering (scientific paper)
A laser-light scattering method was evaluated from the viewpoint of the measurement ability of concentration and size distribution of microparticles in molten ice core samples. It was demonstrated that analysis can be performed with 10 % accuracy by diluting the sample with ultrapure water by 50 times to eliminate coincidence loss. Using this method, the concentration and size distribution of microparticles were determined on 2829 samples from a 2503 m deep ice core drilled at Dome Fuji, Antarctica. The present paper shows the profiles of number and volume concentrations through the whole depth and the changes in the size distribution through three glacial cycles in the past 320 k-years
Pacemaker Inhibition During Cardioplegia in Open Heart Surgery
A 53-year-old patient underwent mitral valve replacement after implantation of permanent pacemaker. During cardioplegia in open heart surgery, we performed the inhibition of permanent pacemaker to obtain complete myocardial preservation and quiet heart, using stimulations of an external pulse generator.
This procedure is considered available, when the patient who has had a permanent pacemaker undergoes open heart surgery more safely
Implementation and Performance Evaluation of Distributed Autonomous Multi-Hop Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications over TV White Space
This paper presents design and experimental evaluation of a distributed autonomous multi-hop vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication system over TV white space performed in Japan. We propose the two-layer control channel model, which consists of the Zone Aware Control Channel (ZACC) and the Swarm Aware Control Channel (SACC), to establish the multi-hop network. Several vehicles construct a swarm using location information shared through ZACC, and share route and channel information, and available white space information through SACC. To evaluate the system we carried out field experiments with swarm made of three vehicles in a convoy. The vehicles observe channel occupancy via energy detection and agree on the control and the data channels autonomously. For coarse synchronization of quiet periods for sensing we use GPS driven oscillators, and introduce a time margin to accommodate for remaining drift. When a primary user is detected in any of the borrowed channels, the vehicles switch to a vacant channel without disrupting the ongoing multi-hop communication. We present the experimental results in terms of the time to establish control channel, channel switching time, delivery ratio of control message exchange, and throughput. As a result, we showed that our implementation can provide efficient and stable multi-hop V2V communication by using dynamic spectrum access (DSA) techniques
CHANGE IN KINETICS OF THROWING ARM JOINTS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN DUE TO TRAINING OF A DISTANCE THROW
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of training with a standard motion model on the kinetics of throwing arm joints in elementary school children. Thirty-two children from sixth grade were participated in three sessions: pre- and post-training videotaping and technique training. Their throwing motions were videotaped with two high-speed cameras and analysed three-dimensionally. Through the training with the use of standard motion model as a reference, throwing distance and ball velocity significantly improved. Joint force, joint torque and mechanical work in throwing arm joints increased at the post-training. The results indicated that the use of standard motion model was useful for the improvement in throwing distance and joint kinetics of throwing arm
