    Metaphor. The good argument in science communication

    The relation between metaphor and argumentation in science communication is becoming a crucial tool for critical metaphor studies. In this article, by means of a crossed analysis (epistemological, cognitive and linguistic), I focus especially on a peculiar dynamic of metaphor use in scientific communication showing opposite, paradoxical attitudes towards the use of metaphors, respectively, ubiquity vs. invisibility, inclination vs. resistance, deliberate vs. non-deliberate. In this way, an overall philosophical reflection about the underlying reasons for the ambivalence in the use of metaphor in scientific communication would be proposed and discussed

    Crossovers between epigenesis and epigenetics. A multicenter approach to the history of epigenetics (1901-1975)

    The origin of epigenetics has been traditionally traced back to Conrad Hal Waddington's foundational work in 1940s. The aim of the present paper is to reveal a hidden history of epigenetics, by means of a multicenter approach. Our analysis shows that genetics and embryology in early XX century--far from being non-communicating vessels--shared similar questions, as epitomized by Thomas Hunt Morgan's works. Such questions were rooted in the theory of epigenesis and set the scene for the development of epigenetics. Since the 1950s, the contribution of key scientists (Mary Lyon and Eduardo Scarano), as well as the discussions at the international conference of Gif-sur-Yvette (1957) paved the way for three fundamental shifts of focus: 1. From the whole embryo to the gene; 2. From the gene to the complex extranuclear processes of development; 3. From cytoplasmic inheritance to the epigenetics mechanisms

    Bio-techno-practice. Personal and social responsibility in the academic work

    The new challenges posed by biomedicine and biotechnologies ask for a deeper consideration on the relationship among science, knowledge and social responsibility. On one hand, in fact, technologies seem to shape our idea of human progress and scientific understanding of the natural world and of life in particular. On the other hand, a thoughtful consideration on the philosophical foundations of science as human enterprise is required. This also opens important questions about the new emerging paradigms of ‘excellence’ in the academic, social and market fields and on the role that universities play in training the future leaders and professionals of our society. After a short review of the contemporary philosophical reflections on the unity of knowledge, which is the origin and the goal of academic work, we argue that adherence to our current challenges through the bio-techno-practice prism is a fecund driving force of the academic activities. Moving from the experience of an international project, we also discuss the impact that such interdisciplinary activities have on what we call hidden curriculum, i.e. the embodied style of (skills that allow) people in taking care of each other in their physical, social, professional and scientific needs

    Dynamic Estimation of Rigid Motion from Perspective Views via Recursive Identification of Exterior Differential Systems with Parameters on a Topological Manifold

    We formulate the problem of estimating the motion of a rigid object viewed under perspective projection as the identification of a dynamic model in Exterior Differential form with parameters on a topological manifold. We first describe a general method for recursive identification of nonlinear implicit systems using prediction error criteria. The parameters are allowed to move slowly on some topological (not necessarily smooth) manifold. The basic recursion is solved in two different ways: one is based on a simple extension of the traditional Kalman Filter to nonlinear and implicit measurement constraints, the other may be regarded as a generalized "Gauss-Newton" iteration, akin to traditional Recursive Prediction Error Method techniques in linear identification. A derivation of the "Implicit Extended Kalman Filter" (IEKF) is reported in the appendix. The ID framework is then applied to solving the visual motion problem: it indeed is possible to characterize it in terms of identification of an Exterior Differential System with parameters living on a C0 topological manifold, called the "essential manifold". We consider two alternative estimation paradigms. The first is in the local coordinates of the essential manifold: we estimate the state of a nonlinear implicit model on a linear space. The second is obtained by a linear update on the (linear) embedding space followed by a projection onto the essential manifold. These schemes proved successful in performing the motion estimation task, as we show in experiments on real and noisy synthetic image sequences

    New insight into the Pleistocene deposits of Monte delle Piche, Rome, and remarks on the biochronology of Hippopotamus (Mammalia, Hippopotamidae) and Stephanorhinus etruscus (Mammalia, Rhinocerotidae) in Italy

    Several large mammal assemblages have been collected in the Roman basin since the XIX century, but they usually lack any stratigraphic datum or details about the fossiliferous localities. In this work, the stratigraphic provenance of large mammal remains discovered at Monte delle Piche (Rome) is investigated. The systematic revision of these specimens allows the recording of the presence of Hippopotamus sp., Stephanorhinus sp. and Stephanorhinus etruscus. On the basis of micropalaeontological analysis performed on sediment sampled from the studied specimens and considering the stratigraphy of the area, two fossiliferous levels are recognised at Monte delle Piche. The remain of the hippopotamus was collected in fluvial gravels and sand deposits, in which the presence of Cyprideis is also recorded. This deposit is chronologically related to the latest Early-early Middle Pleistocene. Hippopotamus was present in Italy and Western Europe from the latest Villafranchian to MIS 4/3. The mandible of S. etruscus was collected in marine deposits along with abundant foraminifera and ostracods, which correlate with the late Early Pleistocene. Stephanorhinus etruscus occurred in Western Europe at the beginning of the Villafranchian, and it was documented until the end of the Villafranchian in Italy and until the Early-Middle Pleistocene transition in the Iberian Peninsula

    Optimal piezo-electro-mechanical coupling to control plate vibrations

    A new way of coupling electrical and mechanical waves, using piezoelectric effect, is presented here. Since the energy exchange between two systems supporting wave propagation is maximum when their evolution is governed by similar equations, hence, an optimal electromechanical coupling is obtained by designing an electric network which is "analog" to the mechanical structure to be controlled. In this paper, we exploit this idea to enhance the coupling, between a Kirchhoff-Love plate and one possible synthesis of its circuital analog, as obtained by means of a set of piezoelectric actuators uniformly distributed upon the plate. It is shown how this approach allows for an optimal energy exchange between the mechanic and the electric forms independent of the modal evolution of the structure. Moreover, we show how an efficient electric dissipation of the mechanical energy can be obtained adding dissipative elements in the electric network.Comment: 9 page

    Recursive Motion Estimation on the Essential Manifold

    Visual motion estimation can be regarded as estimation of the state of a system of difference equations with unknown inputs defined on a manifold. Such a system happens to be "linear", but it is defined on a space (the so called "Essential manifold") which is not a linear (vector) space. In this paper we will introduce a novel perspective for viewing the motion estimation problem which results in three original schemes for solving it. The first consists in "flattening the space" and solving a nonlinear estimation problem on the flat (euclidean) space. The second approach consists in viewing the system as embedded in a larger euclidean space (the smallest of the embedding spaces), and solving at each step a linear estimation problem on a linear space, followed by a "projection" on the manifold (see fig. 5). A third "algebraic" formulation of motion estimation is inspired by the structure of the problem in local coordinates (flattened space), and consists in a double iteration for solving an "adaptive fixed-point" problem (see fig. 6). Each one of these three schemes outputs motion estimates together with the joint second order statistics of the estimation error, which can be used by any structure from motion module which incorporates motion error [20, 23] in order to estimate 3D scene structure. The original contribution of this paper involves both the problem formulation, which gives new insight into the differential geometric structure of visual motion estimation, and the ideas generating the three schemes. These are viewed within a unified framework. All the schemes have a strong theoretical motivation and exhibit accuracy, speed of convergence, real time operation and flexibility which are superior to other existing schemes [1, 20, 23]. Simulations are presented for real and synthetic image sequences to compare the three schemes against each other and highlight the peculiarities of each one
