Measurements of J/ψe+e\mathrm{J/\psi \rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}} with ALICE at the LHC

The ALICE detector provides excellent capabilities to study quarkonium production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Heavy quarkonia, bound states of charm or beauty quark anti-quark pairs such as the J/ψ\mathrm{J/\psi}, are expected to be produced by initial hard processes. Thus they will provide insight into the earliest and hottest stages of AA collisions where the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is expected. Furthermore, high-precision data from pp collisions represent an essential baseline for the measurement of nuclear modifications in heavy-ions and serve also as a crucial test for several models of quarkonium hadroproduction. In addition, the study of pA collisions allows to investigate nuclear modifications due to Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) effects. In ALICE, J/ψ\mathrm{J/\psi} were measured in pp and Pb--Pb collisions down to pTp_{\mathrm T} = 0 via their di-electron decay channel in the central barrel (y<|y| < 0.8). Results on the nuclear modification factor (RAAR_{\mathrm{AA}}) at central rapidities in Pb--Pb collisions at sNN=2.76\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.76 TeV will be shown and their implications discussed. A separation of the prompt and non-prompt components is also possible down to pTp_{\mathrm T} of the J/ψ\mathrm{J/\psi} of 2 GeV/cc

Cultural representations of mental illness in contemporary Japan

    Get PDF
This paper presents the results of a research project aimed at studying the cultural representations of mental illness and related interventions models in contemporary Japan, and providing the basis for a comparison between Japanese and Italian mental health cultures. The research methodology is based on interviews with scholars and professionals from multiple disciplinary areas and fields of practice, in order to analyze the interactions between medical, social sciences’ and humanities’ discourse on mental illness. The results highlight the significance of home custody within the modernization of the country, between Edo and Meiji periods; the cultural frameworks of contemporary psychiatry’s action; what anti-psychiatry and the ‘critical’ reflection on mental illness represented within the academic debate; the new demands and potentialities connected to the spread of psychology within the mental health sector; remarkably new experiences of social integration with the contribution of arts

Free Trade and New Economic Powers: The Worldview of Peter Mandelson

This paper uses the Operational Code methodology in order to study Peter Mandelson's worldviews. Using speeches from the public record I constructed Mandelson's views of the international relations and of the EU's relationships with other countries as well as his role as a leading actor. The results of the study suggest that Mandelson advocates the values of multilateralism and free trade. He considers them as the principles which should order EU's foreign policies. In his view, it is the task of the United State and of the EU to strengthen such international values in order to fight against poverty and declining economies across the world. By promoting such values the EU is protecting and furthering its own interests worldwide.EU external trade policy, free trade, multilateralism, power politics, globalisation

Investigating changing work and economic cultures through the lens of youth employment : a case study from a psychosocial perspective in Italy

Changes in the forms and cultural meanings of work have gone deep during the last decades, with the transient nature of work becoming the norm rather than the exception. This is impacting particularly on youth employment, as Italy’s case epitomizes. Based on interview and focus group data, our study provides a multidimensional model to read and map the multiple tensions young people experience, at an emotional level, on entering today’s corporations. Our findings show, on the one hand, that young professionals’ expectation of work as a place of social learning and exchange clashes with the corporate focus on assimilating young people into target-oriented environments. On the other hand, both in younger and older workers, we found the experience of labour relationships that struggle to direct themselves towards a creative purpose and a developmental prospect, while tending to collapse emotionally inwards, in a fight for security
