    The Motivations Behind the Pearl Harbor Attack: A Focus on Energy Security

    Japan attacked to Pearl Harbour had been happened in December 1941. There some conclusion had been founded. Regarding to Japan, there are five reasons: economic reason, financial reason, expanding living space, securing from political domestic unrest, and to win the war speedily. However, the war is a pragmatical choice of Japan and heavily motivated by energy security agenda. Therefore, even they saw to probability to win the war was low, they still committed to have the war. For the US, the reasons to wage war to Japan was more than the anger of Pearl Harbour being devastated, it was a political justification to keep the global domination, especially toward Japan’s steady of growth and expansion. The reason of war is still relevan today as there is some similarity of great powers competitions. Therefore, it needs to be taken as the important lesson learned, in order to make war as history only to the human civilization and maintaining world peace and security

    Optical response of hyperbolic metamaterials with adsorbed nanoparticle arrays

    Experimental studies of have been recently performed to determine the optical effect of adsorption of arrays of gold nanoparticles, NPs (16 nm or 40 nm in diameter) on reflective substrates (Ma et al., ACS Photonics, 2018, 5, 4604–4616; Ma et al., ACS Nano, 2020, 14, 328–336) and on transparent interfaces (Montelongo et al., Nat. Mater., 2017, 16, 1127–1135). As predicted by the theory (Sikdar et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2016, 18, 20486–20498), a reflection quenching effect was observed on the reflective substrates, in the frequency domain centred around the nanoparticle localised plasmon resonance. Those results showed a broad dip in reflectivity, which was deepening and red-shifting with increasing array densities. In contrast, the second system has shown, also in accordance with the theory (Sikdar and Kornyshev, Sci. Rep., 2016, 6, 1–16), a broad reflectivity peak in the same frequency domain, increasing in intensity and shifting to the red with densification of the array. In the present paper, we develop a theory of an optical response of NP arrays adsorbed on the surface of stacked nanosheet hyperbolic substrates. The response varies between quenched and enhanced reflectivity, depending on the volume fractions of the metallic and dielectric components in the hyperbolic metamaterial. We reproduce the results of the earlier works in the two opposite limiting cases – of a pure metal and a pure dielectric substrates, while predicting novel resonances for intermediate compositions. Whereas the metal/dielectric ratio in the hyperbolic substrate cannot be changed in time – for each experiment a new substrate should be fabricated – the density of the adsorbed nanoparticle arrays can be controlled in real time in electrochemical photonic cells (Montelongo et al., Nat. Mater., 2017, 16, 1127–1135; Ma et al., ACS Photonics, 2018, 5, 4604–4616; Ma et al., ACS Nano, 2020, 14, 328–336). Therefore, we systematically study the effect of the array density on the optical response of such systems, which could be later verified experimentally.     Medicinal animals used in ethnoveterinary practices of the 'Cariri Paraibano', NE Brazil

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Zootherapy is important in various socio-cultural environments, and innumerous examples of the use of animal derived remedies can currently be found in many urban, semi-urban and more remote localities in all parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. However, although a number of ethnobiological inventories concerning the use of medicinal animals in human health care have been compiled in Brazil in recent years, zootherapeutic practices in ethnoveterinary medicine (EVM) are poorly described and neglected in favor of human ethnomedicine. In this sense, the purpose of this study was to describe the local zootherapeutic practices in ethnoveterinary medicine of semi-arid of NE Brazil (Caatinga biome) and to contribute to future research about the validation of the effects and side effects of these animal products</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The information obtained through semi-structured interviews was complemented by free interviews and informal conversations. A total of 67 people were interviewed (53 men and 14 women) about the use and commercialization of medicinal animals. To determine the relative importance of each local known species, their use-values (UV) were calculated. Diversity of species utilized was compared, between localities, using rarefaction curves and diversity estimate (Chao2)</p> <p>Results and Conclusions</p> <p>A total of 44 animal species (37 vertebrates and 7 invertebrates), distributed among 6 taxonomic categories were found to be used to treat 30 different ailments in livestock and pets. The results of our surveys revealed a rich traditional knowledge of local residents about the use of animals in traditional veterinary medicine. Although it is gradually being discontinued, the perceived efficacy, economic and geographic accessibility were main reasons for popularity of zootherapy in studied areas.</p

    Effects of an Alpha-4 Integrin Inhibitor on Restenosis in a New Porcine Model Combining Endothelial Denudation and Stent Placement

    Restenosis remains the main complication of balloon angioplasty and/or stent implantation. Preclinical testing of new pharmacologic agents preventing restenosis largely rely on porcine models, where restenosis is assessed after endothelial abrasion of the arterial wall or stent implantation. We combined endothelial cell denudation and implantation of stents to develop a new clinically relevant porcine model of restenosis, and used this model to determine the effects of an α4 integrin inhibitor, ELN 457946, on restenosis. Balloon-angioplasty endothelial cell denudation and subsequent implantation of bare metal stents in the left anterior descending coronary, iliac, and left common carotid arteries was performed in domestic pigs, treated with vehicle or ELN 457946, once weekly via subcutaneous injections, for four weeks. After 1 month, histopathology and morphometric analyses of the arteries showed complete healing and robust, consistent restenotic response in stented arteries. Treatment with ELN 457946 resulted in a reduction in the neointimal response, with decreases in area percent stenosis between 12% in coronary arteries and 30% in peripheral vessels. This is the first description of a successful pig model combining endothelial cell denudation and bare metal stent implantation. This new double injury model may prove particularly useful to assess pharmacological effects of drug candidates on restenosis, in coronary and/or peripheral arteries. Furthermore, the ELN 457946 α4 integrin inhibitor, administered subcutaneously, reduced inflammation and restenosis in stented coronary and peripheral arteries in pigs, therefore representing a promising systemic therapeutic approach in reducing restenosis in patients undergoing angioplasty and/or stent implantation

    Far-Persons

    I argue for the moral relevance of a category of individuals I characterize as far-persons. Following Gary Varner, I distinguish near-persons, animals with a " robust autonoetic consciousness " but lacking an adult human's " biographical sense of self, " from the merely sentient, those animals living "entirely in the present." I note the possibility of a third class. Far-persons lack a biographical sense of self, possess a weak autonoetic consciousness, and are able to travel mentally through time a distance that exceeds the capacities of the merely sentient. Far-persons are conscious of and exercise control over short-term cognitive states, states limited by their temporal duration. The animals in question, human and nonhuman, consciously choose among various strategies available to them to achieve their ends, making them subjects of what I call "lyrical experience:" brief and potentially intense pleasures and pains. But their ends expire minute-by-minute, not stretching beyond, I say metaphorically, the present hour. I conclude by discussing the moral status of far-persons
