    Systematics of Leading Particle Production

    Using a QCD inspired model developed by our group for particle production, the Interacting Gluon Model (IGM), we have made a systematic analysis of all available data on leading particle spectra. These data include diffractive collisions and photoproduction at HERA. With a small number of parameters (essentially only the non-perturbative gluon-gluon cross section and the fraction of diffractive events) good agreement with data is found. We show that the difference between pion and proton leading spectra is due to their different gluon distributions. We predict a universality in the diffractive leading particle spectra in the large momentum region, which turns out to be independent of the incident energy and of the projectile type.Comment: 13 pages, Latex, 4 ps figures.     Technetium-99 was measured in vegetation and soils collected near three operating gaseous diffusion facilities to obtain estimates of the soil-to-vegetation concentration factor. Analyses were performed primarily using radiochemical separations and low-level beta counting techniques with selected samples checked by isotope dilution mass spectroscopy. The concentration factor pooled from all three facilities appeared to be lognormally distributed with a geometric mean of 9.5 and a geometric standard deviation of 2.4. These values are comparable to calculated equilibrium concentration factors derived from other field experiments in which concentrations in soil and vegetation were observed to decrease with time subsequent to a single application of/sup 95m/TcO/sub 4//sup -/. These field values are one to two orders of magnitude less than concentration factors derived from laboratory experiments using potted plants. It is suggested that the radiologic significance of /sup 99/Tc in terrestrial food chains of importance to humans may be substantially lower than indicated by the simple difference between laboratory and field concentration factors if the time dependence of technetium activity in vegetation and soil is taken into consideration in radiological assessment models

We explored patterns of co-occurrence of ectoparasite species on individual hosts from Central Europe (Slovakia) and South America (Argentina) within and between higher taxa while controlling for confounding factors associated with variation between host individuals and host species, as well as spatial and temporal variation. We used a recently developed statistical approach, the hierarchical modelling of species communities. 2. Although the probability of pairwise associations of the majority of species in both regions did not differ from random, all significant species associations in Slovakia were positive, whereas the only three significant species associations in Argentina were negative. On average, associations between ectoparasite species belonging to different higher taxa were positive in Slovakia and negative in Argentina. 3. At the host species level, both positive and negative associations between species were detected in all higher taxa. This was also true for ectoparasite co-occurrences in the same site, habitat, or year; although the number of co-occurring species pairs with high posterior probability was much greater in Slovakia than in Argentina. 4. We conclude that consideration of species co-occurrences across the entire multi-host assemblage and control for confounding spatial and temporal factors provided important insights into parasite community structure.Fil: Krasnov, Boris R..
