Impulsive cylindrical gravitational wave: one possible radiative form emitted from cosmic strings and corresponding electromagnetic response

The cosmic strings(CSs) may be one important source of gravitational waves(GWs), and it has been intensively studied due to its special properties such as the cylindrical symmetry. The CSs would generate not only usual continuous GW, but also impulsive GW that brings more concentrated energy and consists of different GW components broadly covering low-, intermediate- and high-frequency bands simultaneously. These features might underlie interesting electromagnetic(EM) response to these GWs generated by the CSs. In this paper, with novel results and effects, we firstly calculate the analytical solutions of perturbed EM fields caused by interaction between impulsive cylindrical GWs (would be one of possible forms emitted from CSs) and background celestial high magnetic fields or widespread cosmological background magnetic fields, by using rigorous Einstein - Rosen metric. Results show: perturbed EM fields are also in the impulsive form accordant to the GW pulse, and asymptotic behaviors of the perturbed EM fields are fully consistent with the asymptotic behaviors of the energy density, energy flux density and Riemann curvature tensor of corresponding impulsive cylindrical GWs. The analytical solutions naturally give rise to the accumulation effect which is proportional to the term of distance^1/2, and based on it, we for the first time predict potentially observable effects in region of the Earth caused by the EM response to GWs from the CSs.Comment: 34 pages, 12 figure

Determination of organic acids evolution during apple cider fermentation using an improved HPLC analysis method

An efficient method for analyzing ten organic acids in food, namely citric, pyruvic, malic, lactic, succinic, formic, acetic, adipic, propionic and butyric acids, using HPLC was developed. Boric acid was added into the mobile phase to separate lactic and succinic acids, and a post-column buffer solution [5 mmol/L p-toluensulfonic acid (p-TSA) + 20 mmol/L bis (2-hydroxyethyl) iminotris (hydroxymethyl) methane (bis¿tris) + 100 ¿mol/L sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA-2Na)] was used to improve the sensitivity of detection. The average spiked recoveries for the ten organic acids ranged from 82.9 to 127.9% with relative standard deviations of 1.44¿4.71%. The linear ranges of determination were from 15 to 1,000 mg/L with correlation coefficients of 0.9995¿0.9999. The metabolism of organic acids in cider, and the effect of nutrients including diammonium phosphate (DAP), thiamine, biotin, niacinamide and pantothenic acid on their metabolism, were studied using this method of analysis. We found that before cider brewing, additions of 200 mg/L DAP and 0.3 mg/L thiamine to apple juice concentrate results in a high quality cider

LDA+Gutzwiller Method for Correlated Electron Systems

Combining the density functional theory (DFT) and the Gutzwiller variational approach, a LDA+Gutzwiller method is developed to treat the correlated electron systems from {\it ab-initio}. All variational parameters are self-consistently determined from total energy minimization. The method is computationally cheaper, yet the quasi-particle spectrum is well described through kinetic energy renormalization. It can be applied equally to the systems from weakly correlated metals to strongly correlated insulators. The calculated results for SrVO3_3, Fe, Ni and NiO, show dramatic improvement over LDA and LDA+U.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Measurement of the c-axis optical reflectance of AFe2_2As2_2 (A=Ba, Sr) single crystals: Evidence of different mechanisms for the formation of two energy gaps

We present the c-axis optical reflectance measurement on single crystals of BaFe2_2As2_2 and SrFe2_2As2_2, the parent compounds of FeAs based superconductors. Different from the ab-plane optical response where two distinct energy gaps were observed in the SDW state, only the smaller energy gap could be seen clearly for \textbf{E}\parallelc-axis. The very pronounced energy gap structure seen at a higher energy scale for \textbf{E}\parallelab-plane is almost invisible. We propose a novel picture for the band structure evolution across the SDW transition and suggest different driving mechanisms for the formation of the two energy gaps.Comment: 4 page
