Dependence of field-aligned electron precipitation on season, altitude and pitch angle
The occurrence of field-aligned 2.3 keV electron precipitation was examined by using data from more than 7500 orbits of the polar-orbiting satellite, OGO-4. The frequency of occurrence of field aligned precipitation was highest at actual pitch angles between 7 and 10 deg, being highest in the winter months, at highest satellite altitudes. Acceleration by a localized parallel electric field established by electrostatic charge layers is proposed to explain particle observations
Tunable cavity resonator with ramp shaped supports
A cavity for a hydrogen maser is described consisting of three parts which provide highly stable mechanical and thermal expansion characteristics for the cavity and ease of tuning. The three parts which are made of a glass ceramic material having a very small thermal expansion coefficient (1) a top plate, (2) a cylinder with three interrupted helical ramps at its bottom, and (3) a base which includes a bottom plate and three ramp lugs on which the helical ramps of the cylinder rest when the cylinder is placed on the base with the bottom plate in the cylinder. Cavity tuning is achieved by rotating the cylinder and thereby raising or lowering it on the base, which results in changing the cylinder volume by changing the distance between the bottom and top plates
Interplanetary propulsion using inertial fusion
Inertial fusion can be used to power spacecraft within the solar system and beyond. Such spacecraft have the potential for short-duration manned-mission performance exceeding other technologies. We are conducting a study to assess the systems aspects of inertial fusion as applied to such missions, based on the conceptual engine design of Hyde (1983) we describe the required systems for an entirely new spacecraft design called VISTA that is based on the use of DT fuel. We give preliminary design details for the power conversion and power conditioning systems for manned missions to Mars of total duration of about 100 days. Specific mission performance results will be published elsewhere, after the study has been completed
Nucleosynthesis in O-Ne-Mg Supernovae
We have studied detailed nucleosynthesis in the shocked surface layers of an
Oxygen-Neon-Magnesium core collapse supernova with an eye to determining if the
conditions are suitable for r process nucleosynthesis. We find no such
conditions in an unmodified model, but do find overproduction of N=50 nuclei
(previously seen in early neutron-rich neutrino winds) in amounts that, if
ejected, would pose serious problems for galactic chemical evolution.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, to be published in Astrophysical Journal Letter
Variability Flagging in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer Preliminary Data Release Source Catalog contains over 257 million objects. We describe the method used to flag variable source candidates in the Catalog. Using a method based on the chi-square of single-exposure flux measurements, we generated a variability flag for each object, and have identified almost 460,000 candidate sources that exhibit significant flux variability with greater than ~7σ confidence. We discuss the flagging method in detail and describe its benefits and limitations. We also present results from the flagging method, including example light curves of several types of variable sources including Algol-type eclipsing binaries, RR Lyr, W UMa, and a blazar candidate
The Formaldehyde Masers in Sgr B2: Very Long Baseline Array and Very Large Array Observations
Observations of two of the formaldehyde (H2CO) masers (A and D) in Sgr B2
using the VLBA+Y27 (resolution ~0.01") and the VLA (resolution ~9") are
presented. The VLBA observations show compact sources (<10 milliarcseconds, <80
AU) with brightness temperatures >10^8 K. The maser sources are partially
resolved in the VLBA observations. The flux densities in the VLBA observations
are about 1/2 those of the VLA; and, the linewidths are about 2/3 of the VLA
values. The applicability of a core-halo model for the emission distribution is
demonstrated. Comparison with earlier H2CO absorption observations and with
ammonia (NH3) observations suggests that H2CO masers form in shocked gas.
Comparison of the integrated flux densities in current VLA observations with
those in previous observations indicates that (1) most of the masers have
varied in the past 20 years, and (2) intensity variations are typically less
than a factor of two compared to the 20-year mean. No significant linear or

FEniCS-HPC: Automated predictive high-performance finite element computing with applications in aerodynamics
Developing multiphysics finite element methods (FEM) and scalable HPC implementations can be very challenging in terms of software complexity and performance, even more so with the addition of goal-oriented adaptive mesh refinement. To manage the complexity we in this work present general adaptive stabilized methods with automated implementation in the FEniCS-HPC automated open source software framework. This allows taking the weak form of a partial differential equation (PDE) as input in near-mathematical notation and automatically generating the low-level implementation source code and auxiliary equations and quantities necessary for the adaptivity. We demonstrate new optimal strong scaling results for the whole adaptive framework applied to turbulent flow on massively parallel architectures down to 25000 vertices per core with ca. 5000 cores with the MPI-based PETSc backend and for assembly down to 500 vertices per core with ca. 20000 cores with the PGAS-based JANPACK backend. As a demonstration of the power of the combination of the scalability together with the adaptive methodology allowing prediction of gross quantities in turbulent flow we present an application in aerodynamics of a full DLR-F11 aircraft in connection with the HiLift-PW2 benchmarking workshop with good match to experiments
The retarding ion mass spectrometer on dynamics Explorer-A
An instrument designed to measure the details of the thermal plasma distribution combines the ion temperature-determining capability of the retarding potential analyzer with the compositional capabilities of the mass spectrometer and adds multiple sensor heads to sample all directions relative to the spacecraft ram directions. The retarding ion mass spectrometer, its operational modes and calibration are described as well as the data reduction plan, and the anticipated results
Decreased dopamine activity predicts relapse in methamphetamine abusers.
Studies in methamphetamine (METH) abusers showed that the decreases in brain dopamine (DA) function might recover with protracted detoxification. However, the extent to which striatal DA function in METH predicts recovery has not been evaluated. Here we assessed whether striatal DA activity in METH abusers is associated with clinical outcomes. Brain DA D2 receptor (D2R) availability was measured with positron emission tomography and [(11)C]raclopride in 16 METH abusers, both after placebo and after challenge with 60 mg oral methylphenidate (MPH) (to measure DA release) to assess whether it predicted clinical outcomes. For this purpose, METH abusers were tested within 6 months of last METH use and then followed up for 9 months of abstinence. In parallel, 15 healthy controls were tested. METH abusers had lower D2R availability in caudate than in controls. Both METH abusers and controls showed decreased striatal D2R availability after MPH and these decreases were smaller in METH than in controls in left putamen. The six METH abusers who relapsed during the follow-up period had lower D2R availability in dorsal striatum than in controls, and had no D2R changes after MPH challenge. The 10 METH abusers who completed detoxification did not differ from controls neither in striatal D2R availability nor in MPH-induced striatal DA changes. These results provide preliminary evidence that low striatal DA function in METH abusers is associated with a greater likelihood of relapse during treatment. Detection of the extent of DA dysfunction may be helpful in predicting therapeutic outcomes
Ising model with periodic pinning of mobile defects
A two-dimensional Ising model with short-range interactions and mobile
defects describing the formation and thermal destruction of defect stripes is
studied. In particular, the effect of a local pinning of the defects at the
sites of straight equidistant lines is analysed using Monte Carlo simulations
and the transfer matrix method. The pinning leads to a long-range ordered
magnetic phase at low temperatures. The dependence of the phase transition
temperature, at which the defect stripes are destabilized, on the pinning
strength is determined. The transition seems to be of first order, with and
