We extend the Jang equation proof of the positive energy theorem due to R.
Schoen and S.-T. Yau from dimension to dimensions . This
requires us to address several technical difficulties that are not present when
. The regularity and decay assumptions for the initial data sets to which
our argument applies are weaker than those of R. Schoen and S.-T. Yau. In
recent joint work with L.-H. Huang, D. Lee, and R. Schoen we have given a
different proof of the full positive mass theorem in dimensions .
We pointed out that this theorem can alternatively be derived from our density

(Global) Optimization: Historical notes and recent developments
Recent developments in (Global) Optimization are surveyed in this paper. We collected and commented quite a large number of recent references which, in our opinion, well represent the vivacity, deepness, and width of scope of current computational approaches and theoretical results about nonconvex optimization problems. Before the presentation of the recent developments, which are subdivided into two parts related to heuristic and exact approaches, respectively, we briefly sketch the origin of the discipline and observe what, from the initial attempts, survived, what was not considered at all as well as a few approaches which have been recently rediscovered, mostly in connection with machine learning
Capillary Condensation, Freezing, and Melting in Silica Nanopores: A Sorption Isotherm and Scanning Calorimetry Study on Nitrogen in Mesoporous SBA-15
Condensation, melting and freezing of nitrogen in a powder of mesoporous
silica grains (SBA-15) has been studied by combined volumetric sorption
isotherm and scanning calorimetry measurements. Within the mean field model of
Saam and Cole for vapor condensation in cylindrical pores a liquid nitrogen
sorption isotherm is well described by a bimodal pore radius distribution. It
encompasses a narrow peak centered at 3.3 nm, typical of tubular mesopores, and
a significantly broader peak characteristic of micropores, located at 1 nm. The
material condensed in the micropores as well as the first two adsorbed
monolayers in the mesopores do not exhibit any caloric anomaly. The
solidification and melting transformation affects only the pore condensate
beyond approx. the second monolayer of the mesopores. Here, interfacial melting
leads to a single peak in the specific heat measurements. Homogeneous and
heterogeneous freezing along with a delayering transition for partial fillings
of the mesopores result in a caloric freezing anomaly similarly complex and
dependent on the thermal history as has been observed for argon in SBA-15. The
axial propagation of the crystallization in pore space is more effective in the
case of nitrogen than previously observed for argon, which we attribute to
differences in the crystalline textures of the pore solids.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
Foliations and Chern-Heinz inequalities
We extend the Chern-Heinz inequalities about mean curvature and scalar
curvature of graphs of -functions to leaves of transversally oriented
codimension one -foliations of Riemannian manifolds. That extends
partially Salavessa's work on mean curvature of graphs and generalize results
of Barbosa-Kenmotsu-Oshikiri \cite{barbosa-kenmotsu-Oshikiri} and
Barbosa-Gomes-Silveira \cite{barbosa-gomes-silveira} about foliations of
3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds by constant mean curvature surfaces. These
Chern-Heinz inequalities for foliations can be applied to prove
Haymann-Makai-Osserman inequality (lower bounds of the fundamental tones of
bounded open subsets in terms of its inradius)

Some Curvature Problems in Semi-Riemannian Geometry
In this survey article we review several results on the curvature of
semi-Riemannian metrics which are motivated by the positive mass theorem. The
main themes are estimates of the Riemann tensor of an asymptotically flat
manifold and the construction of Lorentzian metrics which satisfy the dominant
