    Joint production and multifunctionality in agriculture: Case studies of small farms on the island of Sicily

    Starting in the 1970s, agriculture in Western countries began to progressively lose the critical success factors on which it based its competitive advantage, which was localization. The development of both the food industry and organized distribution, the intensification of trade, and the speed of information transfer led to new needs and new scenarios within which new agricultural systems emerged. This research analyzed the changes imposed on the agricultural system by the economic development process and determined the trajectories taken by some agricultural entrepreneurs. The study shows that those agricultural entrepreneurs who have been able to adapt their business strategy to the new production scenarios that have emerged remain competitive in the market, while those who have been passively affected by economic development have resulted in agriculture that in many ways only manages to survive thanks to the contribution of the Common Agricultural Policy and without which it would be ousted from the market

    Qualitative determinants of wine demand: an exploratory analysis of two Sicilian wines "Catarratto" and "Nero d'Avola"

    This article analyzed the socio-cultural representations associated with two Sicilian wines, Catarratto, and Nero d’Avola. The study was carried out in the area of western Sicily, where most of the wine growing is concentrated. In particular, for ‘Catarratto’, the research was conducted in the area of the Gulf of Castellammare in the province of Trapani, an area particularly suited to the cultivation of the ‘Catarratto’ vine from which the white wine is obtained; for ‘Nero d’Avola’, the research was conducted in the area of Menfi in the province of Agrigento, an area particularly suited to this black vine. Our objective was to determine how the players in the wine chain, and who indirectly deal with wine, construct their mental model relating to wine to suggest to companies the appropriate wine marketing actions to take to increase their competitive advantage. To achieve the objective of the research, ten focus groups consisting of wine consumers, teetotalers, wine opinion leaders, wine merchants, wine shop owners, medical doctors, and food experts were conducted. During the focus group, we gave these subjects a document in which they had to explain what wine evokes in them. The results of the research confirm that wine is a complex food product whose consumption evokes sensations, memories, and pleasures. The study provides an important source of knowledge on the current cultural significance of wine and its consumption in these two areas of Sicily. Therefore, the study highlighted the quality of these two Sicilian wines can guarantee competitiveness at the company and sector levels

    Culinary tourism has recently been gaining increasing attention in tourism practice and research. Meat production and consumption also play a signicant role in the management and marketing of food tourism. This research explores the role of meat in two high-end restaurants located in the city of Partinico, an agricultural destination in the province of Palermo. The results show the meat identity of both restaurants and reveal how meat-based menus communicate a sense of place centered on local knowledge and the seasonal component of meat products

    Street food in Palermo: Traditions and market perspectives

    Street food protects and promotes the history and tradition of a place. The origin of street foods largely relies on the cultural and natural landscapes that surround the environments where they are prepared and sold. Street food illustrates a culinary heritage that is embedded in the ways of life of people, both residents and visitors. Drawing on a qualitative study, the researchers conducted ten interviews with street food vendors in the city of Palermo (Sicily, Italy) in order to understand this growing phenomenon in urban environments of the Mediterranean, where the street food also brings the customers to ancient times. Results show the strategy of the entrepreneurs as street food vendors and sheds light into the practices and perceptions they have in relation to the street food past, present and future in the context of street food values

    Exploring consumer behavior and willingness to pay regarding sustainable wine certification

    Sustainability is a rapidly growing phenomenon at both the European and national levels. The "Green Economy" model and sustainability programs have spared no economic sector. The wine sector has also been swept up in this "green wave," and more and more companies have adopted sustainable production plans and socially responsible behavior. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the wine sector interacts with the main topic of sustainability and communication, particularly certification. More specifically, the goal is to understand how consumers perceive sustainability and how much they are willing to pay for it compared to con-ventional wine. The analysis and collection of data on consumer behavior and willingness to pay (WTP) for sustainable wine were conducted through an exploratory survey. The research results highlight that consumers are not very conscious about sustainability and this lack of awareness regarding sustainable wine is, at least in part, attributable to confusion within the industry

    Regression with imputed covariates: a generalized missing indicator approach

    International audienceA common problem in applied regression analysis is that covariate values may be missing for some observations but imputed values may be available. This situation generates a trade-off between bias and precision: the complete cases are often disarmingly few, but replacing the missing observations with the imputed values to gain precision may lead to bias. In this paper we formalize this trade-off by showing that one can augment the regression model with a set of auxiliary variables so as to obtain, under weak assumptions about the imputations, the same unbiased estimator of the parameters of interest as complete-case analysis. Given this augmented model, the bias-precision trade-off may then be tackled by either model reduction procedures or model averaging methods. We illustrate our approach by considering the problem of estimating the relation between income and the body mass index (BMI) using survey data affected by item non-response, where the missing values on the main covariates are filled in by imputations

    We study an Allen-Cahn equation perturbed by a multiplicative stochastic noise which is white in time and correlated in space. Formally this equation approximates a stochastically forced mean curvature flow. We derive uniform energy bounds and prove tightness of of solutions in the sharp interface limit, and show convergence to phase-indicator functions.Comment: 27 pages, final Version to appear in "Stochastic Partial Differential Equations: Analysis and Computations". In Version 4, Proposition 6.3 is new. It replaces and simplifies the old propositions 6.4-6.

    Bipolar Quantum Molecular Resonance versus Blunt Dissection tonsillectomy. Objectives: This study compared a quantum molecular resonance tonsillectomy (QMRT) to a standard blunt dissection tonsillectomy (BDT) for effectiveness and safety. Methodology: From January 2011 to September 2012, we recruited 80 children (ages 3 to 16 y) with paediatric obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and/or recurrent tonsillitis. Patients were randomly assigned to receive QMRT (N = 40) or BDT (N = 40). The operating time and blood loss during surgery were evaluated. During the first postoperative week, the patients' parents completed a questionnaire to evaluate bleeding, ear and neck pain, nausea, vomiting, interrupted sleep, oral liquid intake or discomfort in fluid assumption, and analgesic consumption. Results: The average tonsillectomy duration was significantly shorter in the QMRT group (22.07 min \ub1 9.05) than in the BDT group (35.12 min \ub1 13.32; p < 0.000005). The average blood loss during tonsillectomy was significantly lower for the QMRT group (5.62 ml \ub1 7.44) than for the BDT group (43 ml \ub1 33.20; p < 000000001). However, the BDT group reported significantly lower pain scores than the QMRT group on days 2 (p < 0.05), 5 (p < 0.05), and 6 (p < 0.05); on other days, the groups were not significantly different. The BDT group reported two early and one late bleeding episodes; the QMRT group recorded only two late bleeding episodes. Conclusions: QMRT significantly reduced the operating time and intra-operative blood loss. No significant differences were found between the two techniques in postoperative pain or bleeding
