Phase relations in the Ag-Fe-Ti system at 1123 K

    Get PDF
Abstract Phase equilibria in the Ag-Fe-Ti system at 1123 K were determined by using polyphase diffusion couples and equilibrated alloys. The experimental observations are in agreement with a thermodynamic evaluation performed on this system. No ternary phases are present on the Ag-Fe-Ti isotherm at 1123 K. The solubility of iron in the binary intermetallic compounds Ti2Ag and TiAg as well as the solubility of silver in FezTi are negligible. The maximum silver content in FeTi was estimated as =0.5 at.%, while nearly 6 at.% of silver can be dissolved in the /3-Ti(Fe) based solid solution at this temperature

Strong Pinning in High Temperature Superconductors

Detailed measurements of the critical current density jc of YBa2Cu3O7 films grown by pulsed laser deposition reveal the increase of jc as function of the filmthickness. Both this thickness dependence and the field dependence of the critical current are consistently described using a generalization of the theory of strong pinning of Ovchinnikov and Ivlev [Phys. Rev. B 43, 8024 (1991)]. From the model, we deduce values of the defect density (10^21 m^-3) and the elementary pinning force, which are in good agreement with the generally accepted values for Y2O3-inclusions. In the absence of clear evidence that the critical current is determined by linear defects or modulations of the film thickness, our model provides an alternative explanation for the rather universal field dependence of the critical current density found in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited by different methods.Comment: 11 pages; 8 Figures; Published Phys. Limit on suppression of ionization in metastable neon traps due to long-range anisotropy

This paper investigates the possibility of suppressing the ionization rate in a magnetostatic trap of metastable neon atoms by spin-polarizing the atoms. Suppression of the ionization is critical for the possibility of reaching Bose-Einstein condensation with such atoms. We estimate the relevant long-range interactions for the system, consisting of electric quadrupole-quadrupole and dipole-induced dipole terms, and develop short-range potentials based on the Na_2 singlet and triplet potentials. The auto-ionization widths of the system are also calculated. With these ingredients we calculate the ionization rate for spin-polarized and for spin-isotropic samples, caused by anisotropy of the long-range interactions. We find that spin-polarization may allow for four orders of magnitude suppression of the ionization rate for Ne. The results depend sensitively on a precise knowledge of the interaction potentials, however, pointing out the need for experimental input. The same model gives a suppression ratio close to unity for metastable xenon in accordance with experimental results, due to a much increased anisotropy in this case.Comment: 15 pages including figures, LaTex/RevTex, uses epsfig.st

Intracoronary infusion of mononuclear cells after PCI-treated myocardial infarction and arrhythmogenesis: is it safe?

    Get PDF
To reduce long-term morbidity after revascularised acute myocardial infarction, different therapeutic strategies have been investigated. Cell therapy with mononuclear cells from bone marrow (BMMC) or peripheral blood (PBMC) has been proposed to attenuate the adverse processes of remodelling and subsequent heart failure. Previous trials have suggested that cell therapy may facilitate arrhythmogenesis. In the present substudy of the HEBE cell therapy trial, we investigated whether intracoronary cell therapy alters the prevalence of ventricular arrhythmias after 1 month or the rate of severe arrhythmogenic events (SAE) in the first year. In 164 patients of the trial we measured function and infarct size with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Holter registration was performed after 1 month from which the number of triplets (3 successive PVCs) and ventricular tachycardias (VT, ≥4 successive PVCs) was assessed. Thirty-three patients (20%) showed triplets and/or VTs, with similar distribution amongst the groups (triplets: control n = 8 vs. BMMC n = 9, p = 1.00; vs. PBMC n = 10, p = 0.67. VT: control n = 9 vs. BMMC n = 9, p = 0.80; vs. PBMC n = 11, p = 0.69). SAE occurred in 2 patients in the PBMC group and 1 patient in the control group. In conclusion, intracoronary cell therapy is not associated with an increase in ventricular arrhythmias or SAE

Vortex Flow and Transverse Flux Screening at the Bose Glass Transition

We investigate the vortex phase diagram in untwinned YBaCuO single crystals with columnar defects. These randomly distributed defects, produced by heavy ion irradiation, are expected to induce a ``Bose Glass'' phase of localized vortices characterized by a vanishing resistance and a Meissner effect for magnetic fields transverse to the defect axis. We directly observe the transverse Meissner effect using an array of Hall probe magnetometers. As predicted, the Meissner state breaks down at temperatures Ts that decrease linearly with increasing transverse magnetic field. However, Ts falls well below the conventional melting temperature Tm determined by a vanishing resistivity, suggesting an intermediate regime where flux lines are effectively localized even when rotated off the columnar defects.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

SOT-MRAM 300mm integration for low power and ultrafast embedded memories

We demonstrate for the first time full-scale integration of top-pinned perpendicular MTJ on 300 mm wafer using CMOS-compatible processes for spin-orbit torque (SOT)-MRAM architectures. We show that 62 nm devices with a W-based SOT underlayer have very large endurance (> 5x10^10), sub-ns switching time of 210 ps, and operate with power as low as 300 pJ.Comment: presented at VLSI2018 session C8-

The ac magnetic response of mesoscopic type II superconductors

The response of mesoscopic superconductors to an ac magnetic field is numerically investigated on the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (TDGL). We study the dependence with frequency ω\omega and dc magnetic field HdcH_{dc} of the linear ac susceptibility χ(Hdc,ω)\chi(H_{dc}, \omega) in square samples with dimensions of the order of the London penetration depth. At Hdc=0H_{dc}=0 the behavior of χ\chi as a function of ω\omega agrees very well with the two fluid model, and the imaginary part of the ac susceptibility, χ"(ω)\chi"(\omega), shows a dissipative a maximum at the frequency νo=c2/(4πσλ2)\nu_o=c^2/(4\pi \sigma\lambda^2). In the presence of a magnetic field a second dissipation maximum appears at a frequency ωpν0\omega_p\ll\nu_0. The most interesting behavior of mesoscopic superconductors can be observed in the χ(Hdc)\chi(H_{dc}) curves obtained at a fixed frequency. At a fixed number of vortices, χ"(Hdc)\chi"(H_{dc}) continuously increases with increasing HdcH_{dc}. We observe that the dissipation reaches a maximum for magnetic fields right below the vortex penetration fields. Then, after each vortex penetration event, there is a sudden suppression of the ac losses, showing discontinuities in χ"(Hdc)\chi"(H_{dc}) at several values of HdcH_{dc}. We show that these discontinuities are typical of the mesoscopic scale and disappear in macroscopic samples, which have a continuos behavior of χ(Hdc)\chi(H_{dc}). We argue that these discontinuities in χ(Hdc)\chi(H_{dc}) are due to the effect of {\it nascent vortices} which cause a large variation of the amplitude of the order parameter near the surface before the entrance of vortices.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, RevTex
