Cone beam computed tomography volumetric airway changes after orthognathic surgery:a systematic review
The aim of this systematic review was to provide a structured overview of three-dimensional airway volume changes in relation to various orthognathic surgeries. Clinical human studies performing pre- and postoperative three-dimensional airway volume assessments to investigate volumetric changes of the airway after orthognathic surgery were included. Pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied in an extensive search of the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science electronic databases. The cut-off date was set to January 1, 2022. Forty-one articles reporting retrospective and prospective case–control and case series studies were included. All studies were determined to be of medium quality (moderate risk of bias). The included studies were categorized by type of intervention. Pre- and postoperative volumes were extracted from the available data, and volume changes as a percentage of the preoperative levels were calculated. Isolated mandibular setback surgery generally decreased the airway volume. Isolated maxillary or mandibular advancement, bimaxillary advancement, and surgically assisted maxillary expansion generally increased the airway volume in the total airway and oropharynx, among which the effect of bimaxillary advancement surgery appeared most significant. High heterogeneity exists in the terminology and definitions of the airway and its segments. A more uniform methodology for airway volume measurement is needed to provide an insight into the impact on the airway of specific types of surgical intervention. In conclusion, airway volumes are affected after orthognathic surgery, which may be of clinical significance, especially in patients who are predisposed to obstructive sleep apnoea

A new approach and insights on modelling the impact of production diseases on dairy cow welfare
Animal welfare is becoming an important consideration in animal health-related decision-making. Integrating considerations of animal welfare into the decision-making process of farmers involves recognising the significance of health disorder impacts in relation to animal welfare. Yet little research quantifies the impact, making it difficult to include animal welfare in the animal health decision-making process. Quantifying the impact of health disorders on animal welfare is incredibly challenging due to empirical animal-based data collection constraints. An approach to circumvent these constraints is to rely on expert knowledge whereby perceived welfare impairment weights are indicative of the negative welfare effect. In this research, we propose an expertise-based method to quantify the perceived impact of sub-optimal mobility (SOM) on the welfare of dairy cows, because of its welfare importance. We first quantified perceived welfare impairment weights of SOM by eliciting expert knowledge using adaptive conjoint analysis (ACA). Second, using the perceived welfare impairment weights, we derived the perceived welfare disutility (i.e., perceived negative welfare effect) of mobility scores 1–5 (1 = optimal mobility, 5 = severely impaired mobility). Third, using the perceived welfare disutility per mobility score, we quantified the perceived welfare impact at case- and herd-level of SOM for different SOM severity. Results showed that perceived welfare disutility increased with each increase in mobility score. However, the perceived welfare impact of SOM cases with lower mobility scores was higher compared to SOM cases with higher mobility scores. This was because of the longer-lasting duration of the SOM cases with lower mobility scores. Moreover, the perceived herd-level welfare impact was largely due to SOM cases with lower mobility scores because of the longer duration and more frequent incidence compared to the SOM cases with higher mobility scores. These results entail that better welfare of dairy cows with respect to SOM can be achieved if lower mobility scores are detected and treated sooner. Our research demonstrates a novel approach that quantifies the perceived impact of health disorders on animal welfare when empirical evidence is limited
Exploring the consequences of pairing algorithms for binary stars
Knowledge of the binary population in stellar groupings provides important
information about the outcome of the star forming process in different
environments (see, e.g., Blaauw 1991, and references therein). Binarity is also
a key ingredient in stellar population studies, and is a prerequisite to
calibrate the binary evolution channels. In this paper we present an overview
of several commonly used methods to pair individual stars into binary systems,
which we refer to as pairing functions. These pairing functions are frequently
used by observers and computational astronomers, either for their mathematical
convenience, or because they roughly describe the expected outcome of the star
forming process. We discuss the consequences of each pairing function for the
interpretation of observations and numerical simulations. The binary fraction
and mass ratio distribution generally depend strongly on the selection of the
range in primary spectral type in a sample. The mass ratio distribution and
binary fraction derived from a binarity survey among a mass-limited sample of
targets is thus not representative for the population as a whole. Neither
theory nor observations indicate that random pairing of binary components from
the mass distribution, the simplest pairing function, is realistic. It is more
likely that companion stars are formed in a disk around a star, or that a
pre-binary core fragments into two binary components. The results of our
analysis are important for (i) the interpretation of the observed mass ratio
distribution and binary fraction for a sample of stars, (ii) a range of
possible initial condition algorithms for star cluster simulations, and (iii)

The Primordial Binary Population - I: A near-infrared adaptive optics search for close visual companions to A star members of Scorpius OB2
We present the results of a near-infrared adaptive optics survey with the aim
to detect close companions to Hipparcos members in the three subgroups of the
nearby OB association Sco OB2: Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL)
and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC). We have targeted 199 A-type and late B-type
stars in the Ks band, and a subset also in the J and H band. We find 151
stellar components other than the target stars. A brightness criterion is used
to separate these components into 77 background stars and 74 candidate physical
companion stars. Out of these 74 candidate companions, 41 have not been
reported before (14 in US; 13 in UCL; 14 in LCC). Companion star masses range
from 0.1 to 3 Msun. The mass ratio distribution follows f(q) = q^-0.33, which
excludes random pairing. No close (rho < 3.75'') companion stars or background
stars are found in the magnitude range 12 < Ks < 14. The lack of stars with
these properties cannot be explained by low-number statistics, and may imply a
lower limit on the companion mass of ~ 0.1 Msun. Close stellar components with
Ks > 14 are observed. If these components are very low-mass companion stars, a
gap in the companion mass distribution might be present. The small number of
close low-mass companion stars could support the embryo-ejection formation
scenario for brown dwarfs. Our findings are compared with and complementary to
visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric data on binarity in Sco OB2. We find an
overall companion star fraction of 0.52 in this association. This paper is the
first step toward our goal to derive the primordial binary population in Sco

Supernatural belief is not modulated by intuitive thinking style or cognitive inhibition
According to the Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, supernatural belief relies heavily on intuitive thinking—and decreases when analytic thinking is engaged. After pointing out various limitations in prior attempts to support this Intuitive Belief Hypothesis, we test it across three new studies using a variety of paradigms, ranging from a pilgrimage field study to a neurostimulation experiment. In all three studies, we found no relationship between intuitive or analytical thinking and supernatural belief. We conclude that it is premature to explain belief in gods as ‘intuitive’, and that other factors, such as socio-cultural upbringing, are likely to play a greater role in the emergence and maintenance of supernatural belief than cognitive style
