Interplay between function and structure in complex networks
We show that abrupt structural transitions can arise in functionally optimal
networks, driven by small changes in the level of transport congestion. Our
results offer an explanation as to why so many diverse species of network
structure arise in Nature (e.g. fungal systems) under essentially the same
environmental conditions. Our findings are based on an exactly solvable model
system which mimics a variety of biological and social networks. We then extend
our analysis by introducing a novel renormalization scheme involving cost
motifs, to describe analytically the average shortest path across
multiple-ring-and-hub networks. As a consequence, we uncover a 'skin effect'
whereby the structure of the inner multi-ring core can cease to play any role
in terms of determining the average shortest path across the network.Comment: Expanded version of physics/0508228 with additional new result
Fatal anaphylactic sting reaction in a patient with mastocytosis
We report on a 33-year-old female patient with indolent systemic mastocytosis and urticaria pigmentosa who died of an anaphylactic reaction after a yellow jacket sting. As she had no history of previous anaphylactic sting reaction, there was no testing performed in order to detect hymenoptera venom sensitization. But even if a sensitization had been diagnosed, no venom immunotherapy (VIT) would have been recommended. It is almost certain that VIT would have saved her life and it is most likely that VIT is indicated in some patients with mastocytosis with no history of anaphylactic sting reaction. However, no criteria have been established in order to allow a selection of mastocytosis patients eligible for such a `prophylactic' VIT. Copyright (C) 2008 S. Karger AG, Basel
The Mobility Enterprise - Improving Auto Productivity
The Mobility Enterprise is a particular version of a shared vehicle fleet, aimed at solving the problem of low automobile productivity. The automobile consumes a large portion of Americaâs transportation energy supply. It also operates much of the time with unused capacity: vacant seats and empty cargo space. Since programs to fill those vacant seats âride sharing and high occupancy vehicle incentives âhave fallen so far short of their objectives, a new approach is warranted. The enterpriseâs central concept is matching vehicle attributes to travel needs. Generally, a household purchases vehicles for those few trips that require a large capacity, rather than for the majority of trips (usually to work) that have minimal vehicular needs. If a household could tailor its âimmediate accessâ fleet to these frequent trips and still retain reasonable access to larger-capacity special purpose vehicles (SPVâs), considerable economies could be achieved. The household is relieved of owning seldom-used excess capacity, and automobile productivity and efficiency are greatly improved. Having easy access to a shared fleet of SPVâs also affords a household an increase in the quality and economy of its travel experiences. This paper describes a research project recently begun at Purdue that involves a comprehensive investigation of the Mobility Enterprise concept. Questions of institutional barriers, consumer response, and organization and management are discussed here as keys to the fate of the enterprise in the transportation climate of the foreseeable future
A novel therapeutic option in Cogan diseases? TNF-α blockers
Cogan's syndrome is characterized by non-infectious, interstitial keratitis combined with a vestibulo-auditory deficit. Despite therapy with corticosteroids in combination with immunosuppressive agents, relapses occurred in two subjects and the clinical course suggested a progression of the disease. Treatment with anti-TNF-α was started leading to a rapid and sustained clinical remission for over 2 respectively 3year
Integration of streaming services and TCP data transmission in the Internet
We study in this paper the integration of elastic and streaming traffic on a
same link in an IP network. We are specifically interested in the computation
of the mean bit rate obtained by a data transfer. For this purpose, we consider
that the bit rate offered by streaming traffic is low, of the order of
magnitude of a small parameter \eps \ll 1 and related to an auxiliary
stationary Markovian process (X(t)). Under the assumption that data transfers
are exponentially distributed, arrive according to a Poisson process, and share
the available bandwidth according to the ideal processor sharing discipline, we
derive the mean bit rate of a data transfer as a power series expansion in
\eps. Since the system can be described by means of an M/M/1 queue with a
time-varying server rate, which depends upon the parameter \eps and process
(X(t)), the key issue is to compute an expansion of the area swept under the
occupation process of this queue in a busy period. We obtain closed formulas
for the power series expansion in \eps of the mean bit rate, which allow us to
verify the validity of the so-called reduced service rate at the first order.

Performance of the Now Malaria rapid diagnostic test with returned travellers: a 2-year retrospective study in a French teaching hospital
ABSTRACTMalaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum remains the major life-threatening parasitic infection in the world. The number of cases in non-endemic countries continues to increase, and it is important that misdiagnosis of malaria should not occur, especially in non-immune travellers, because of the high risk of a fatal outcome. In a retrospective study of 399 sera, the Now Malaria rapid test was compared with the quantitative buffy coat (QBC) test and microbiological examination of thin blood films. Compared with the QBC test and thin blood films, the Now Malaria test had sensitivity and specificity values of 96.4% and 97%, respectively, for the detection of pure P. falciparum infection. A negative predictive value of 99.4% allows this test to be included in diagnostic strategies for patients presenting with clinical suspicion of malaria. Two false-negative results were associated with low levels of parasitaemia in the specimens. Thus, use of the Now Malaria test alone to detect P. falciparum infection in non-endemic countries could lead to misdiagnosis of malaria. This rapid diagnostic test should therefore be performed in association with another prompt traditional method such as examination of thin blood films
Large closed queueing networks in semi-Markov environment and its application
The paper studies closed queueing networks containing a server station and
client stations. The server station is an infinite server queueing system,
and client stations are single-server queueing systems with autonomous service,
i.e. every client station serves customers (units) only at random instants
generated by a strictly stationary and ergodic sequence of random variables.
The total number of units in the network is . The expected times between
departures in client stations are . After a service completion
in the server station, a unit is transmitted to the th client station with
probability , and being processed in the th client
station, the unit returns to the server station. The network is assumed to be
in a semi-Markov environment. A semi-Markov environment is defined by a finite
or countable infinite Markov chain and by sequences of independent and
identically distributed random variables. Then the routing probabilities
and transmission rates (which are expressed via
parameters of the network) depend on a Markov state of the environment. The
paper studies the queue-length processes in client stations of this network and
is aimed to the analysis of performance measures associated with this network.
The questions risen in this paper have immediate relation to quality control of
complex telecommunication networks, and the obtained results are expected to

High basal melting forming a channel at the grounding line of Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica
Antarctica's ice shelves are thinning at an increasing rate, affecting their buttressing ability. Channels in the ice shelf base unevenly distribute melting, and their evolution provides insight into changing subglacial and oceanic conditions. Here we used phase-sensitive radar measurements to estimate basal melt rates in a channel beneath the currently stable Ross Ice Shelf. Melt rates of 22.2â±â0.2âmâaâ1 (>2500% the overall background rate) were observed 1.7âkm seaward of Mercer/Whillans Ice Stream grounding line, close to where subglacial water discharge is expected. Laser altimetry shows a corresponding, steadily deepening surface channel. Two relict channels to the north suggest recent subglacial drainage reorganization beneath Whillans Ice Stream approximately coincident with the shutdown of Kamb Ice Stream. This rapid channel formation implies that shifts in subglacial hydrology may impact ice shelf stability
