    Barkhausen noise in the Random Field Ising Magnet Nd2_2Fe14_{14}B

    With sintered needles aligned and a magnetic field applied transverse to its easy axis, the rare-earth ferromagnet Nd2_2Fe14_{14}B becomes a room-temperature realization of the Random Field Ising Model. The transverse field tunes the pinning potential of the magnetic domains in a continuous fashion. We study the magnetic domain reversal and avalanche dynamics between liquid helium and room temperatures at a series of transverse fields using a Barkhausen noise technique. The avalanche size and energy distributions follow power-law behavior with a cutoff dependent on the pinning strength dialed in by the transverse field, consistent with theoretical predictions for Barkhausen avalanches in disordered materials. A scaling analysis reveals two regimes of behavior: one at low temperature and high transverse field, where the dynamics are governed by the randomness, and the second at high temperature and low transverse field where thermal fluctuations dominate the dynamics.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures.     CH 3 GHz Observations of the Galactic Center

    A 3 ×\times 3 map of the Galactic Center was made at 9\arcmin resolution and 10\arcmin spacing in the CH 2Π1/2^2\Pi_{1/2}, J=1/2, F=1-1 transition at 3335 MHz. The CH emission shows a velocity extent that is nearly that of the CO(1-0) line, but the CH line profiles differ markedly from the CO. The 3335 MHz CH transition primarily traces low-density molecular gas and our observations indicate that the mass of this component within \sim 30 pc of the Galactic Center is \sim 9 ×\times 106^6 M_\odot. The CO-H2_2 conversion factor obtained for the low-density gas in the mapped region is greater than that thought to apply to the dense molecular gas at the Galactic Center. In addition to tracing the low-density molecular gas at the Galactic Center, the CH spectra show evidence of emission from molecular clouds along the line of sight both in the foreground and background. The scale height of these clouds ranges from 27 - 109 pc, consistent with previous work based on observations of molecular clouds in the inner Galaxy.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figure

    Renormalized broken-symmetry Schwinger-Dyson equations and the 2PI-1/N expansion for the O(N) model

    We derive the renormalized Schwinger-Dyson equations for the one- and two-point functions in the auxiliary field formulation of λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 field theory to order 1/N in the 2PI-1/N expansion. We show that the renormalization of the broken-symmetry theory depends only on the counter terms of the symmetric theory with ϕ=0\phi = 0. We find that the 2PI-1/N expansion violates the Goldstone theorem at order 1/N. In using the O(4) model as a low energy effective field theory of pions to study the time evolution of disoriented chiral condensates one has to {\em{explicitly}} break the O(4) symmetry to give the physical pions a nonzero mass. In this effective theory the {\em additional} small contribution to the pion mass due to the violation of the Goldstone theorem in the 2-PI-1/N equations should be numerically unimportant

    Barkhausen Noise and Critical Scaling in the Demagnetization Curve

    The demagnetization curve, or initial magnetization curve, is studied by examining the embedded Barkhausen noise using the non-equilibrium, zero temperature random-field Ising model. The demagnetization curve is found to reflect the critical point seen as the system's disorder is changed. Critical scaling is found for avalanche sizes and the size and number of spanning avalanches. The critical exponents are derived from those related to the saturation loop and subloops. Finally, the behavior in the presence of long range demagnetizing fields is discussed.     Experimental evidence of accelerated seismic release without critical failure in acoustic emissions of compressed nanoporous materials

    The total energy of acoustic emission (AE) events in externally stressed materials diverges when approaching macroscopic failure. Numerical and conceptual models explain this accelerated seismic release (ASR) as the approach to a critical point that coincides with ultimate failure. Here, we report ASR during soft uniaxial compression of three silica-based (SiO2_2) nanoporous materials. Instead of a singular critical point, the distribution of AE energies is stationary and variations in the activity rate are sufficient to explain the presence of multiple periods of ASR leading to distinct brittle failure events. We propose that critical failure is suppressed in the AE statistics by dissipation and transient hardening. Some of the critical exponents estimated from the experiments are compatible with mean field models, while others are still open to interpretation in terms of the solution of frictional and fracture avalanche models.Comment: preprint, Main article: 7 pages, 3 figures.     Association study of suicidal behavior and affective disorders with a genetic polymorphism in ABCG1, a positional candidate on chromosome 21q22.3

    The gene that codes for the ABC transporter ABCG1 is located in a chromosomal susceptibility region (21q22.3) for affective disorders. Genetic variations in ABCG1 have been associated with affective disorders in Japanese males. In this study, we investigated the distribution of a G2457A polymorphism in patients with affective disorders, suicide attempters with various psychiatric diagnoses and healthy subjects, We initially found a trend towards a modest association with affective disorders in males (p = 0.046 for allele frequencies and p = 0.046 for AA versus GG). We conducted a replication study with independent patients and controls, There was no association with affective disorders, either in the replication or in the combined group, Furthermore, we found no association with suicidal behavior, These findings do not support the hypothesis that ABCG1 is a susceptibility gene for affective disorders or suicidal behavior.     Static Versus Dynamic Friction: The Role of Coherence

    A simple model for solid friction is analyzed. It is based on tangential springs representing interlocked asperities of the surfaces in contact. Each spring is given a maximal strain according to a probability distribution. At their maximal strain the springs break irreversibly. Initially all springs are assumed to have zero strain, because at static contact local elastic stresses are expected to relax. Relative tangential motion of the two solids leads to a loss of coherence of the initial state: The springs get out of phase due to differences in their sizes. This mechanism alone is shown to lead to a difference between static and dynamic friction forces already. We find that in this case the ratio of the static and dynamic coefficients decreases with increasing relative width of the probability distribution, and has a lower bound of 1 and an upper bound of 2.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, revtex

    Magnetic hysteresis in Ising-like dipole-dipole model

    Using zero temperature Monte Carlo simulations we have studied the magnetic hysteresis in a three-dimensional Ising model with nearest neighbor exchange and dipolar interaction. The average magnetization of spins located inside a sphere on a cubic lattice is determined as a function of magnetic field varied periodically. The simulations have justified the appearance of hysteresis and allowed us to have a deeper insight into the series of metastable states developed during this process.Comment: REVTEX, 10 pages including 4 figure
