    Stock Assessment of Ballot's saucer scallop (Ylistrum balloti) in Queensland

    This assessment estimates the status of saucer scallops in the main fishing grounds of the Queensland Southern Inshore fishery. The stock assessment data inputs included total harvests, standardised catch rates and fishery independent density estimates.   Analyses suggested that spawning biomass in 2019 fell to around 17 per cent of the unfished level. The report presents recommendations on fishing effort levels to begin rebuilding the stock to levels consistent with 40 per cent of unfished biomass

    Quantitative assessment of the Queensland saucer scallop (Amusium balloti) fishery

    In recent years (2015 and 2016) there has been growing concern from members of the fishing industry and the Queensland Government over declining catches of legal-sized saucer scallop. This led to a request in mid-2016 by Fisheries Queensland, the fisheries management service within the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, for an investigative analysis of the status of saucer scallops. The scope of the investigation was limited to a short time frame of three months to urgently analyse the most recent data and undertake a stock assessment. This report provides findings that support the concerns about low abundance of legal-sized scallops. Average catch rates from January 2015 to April 2016 were the lowest in the 39-year record. These recent average catch rates are slightly lower than those in 1996 when the scallop population size fell to low levels and emergency closed areas were implemented by the Government. From these data the model estimates of spawning stock in 2015 are potentially as low as 5-6% of 1977 levels, when the fishery was in its early development

    Stock predictions and population indicators for Australia's east coast saucer scallop fishery

    This project undertook analyses to understand the roles of overfishing and the environment on saucer scallops. Results of this study indicated a decline in numbers of spawning scallops. High levels of fishing effort since the 1980s contributed to stock depletion. In addition, environmental influences such as increased sea surface temperatures (SST) may have amplified scallop mortality rates. These findings can be applied to efforts for stock rehabilitation for the scallop fishery between Yeppoon and K’gari (Fraser Island). Recommended management actions include reduction of the spatial intensity of fishing effort applied, and ensuring sufficient annual spawning to support the scallop population and fishery

    Spontaneous virologic suppression in HIV controllers is independent of delayed-type hypersensitivity test responsiveness

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) testing, an in vivo assessment of cell-mediated immunity, is a predictor of HIV disease progression beyond CD4 cell count. We investigated whether preserved DTH responsiveness was characteristic of HIV controllers compared to non-controllers and individuals on suppressive HAART.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>DTH testing consisted of ≄ 3 recall antigens applied approximately every 6 months. DTH responses were classified by the number of positive skin tests: anergic (0), partial anergic (1), or non-anergic (≄ 2). HIV controllers were compared to treatment naĂŻve non-controllers (n = 3822) and a subgroup of non-controllers with VL < 400 copies/mL on their initial HAART regimen (n = 491). The proportion of non-anergic results at first DTH testing was similar for HIV controllers compared to non-controllers (81.9% vs. 77.6%; P = 0.22), but tended to be greater in HIV controllers compared to the HAART subgroup (81.9% vs. 74.5%; P = 0.07). Complete anergy was observed in 14 (10.1%) HIV controllers with CD4 counts ≄ 400 cells/uL. For longitudinal testing, the average percentage of non-anergic DTH determinations per participant was higher in HIV controllers compared to non-controllers (81.2 ± 31.9% vs. 70.7 ± 36.8%; P = 0.0002), however this difference was eliminated with stratification by CD4 count: 200-399 (83.4 ± 35.6% vs. 71.9 ± 40.9%; P = 0.15) and > 400 cells/uL (81.2 ± 31.5% vs. 80.4 ± 32.7%; P = 0.76).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Spontaneous virologic control was not associated with DTH responsiveness, and several HIV controllers were anergic despite having elevated CD4 counts. These findings suggest that cellular immunity assessed by DTH is not a principal factor contributing to spontaneous virologic suppression in HIV controllers.</p

    This article provides an overview of the ethical issues raised by the use of non-human primates (NHPs) in research involving scientific procedures which may cause pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. It is not an exhaustive review of the literature and views on this subject, and it does not present any conclusions about the moral acceptability or otherwise of NHP research. Rather the aim has been to identify the ethical issues involved and to provide guidance on how these might be addressed, in particular by carefully examining the scientific rationale for NHP use, implementing fully the 3Rs principle of Russell and Burch (1959) and applying a robust "harm-benefit assessment" to research proposals involving NHPs

    The relevance of outsourcing and leagile strategies in performance optimization of an integrated process planning and scheduling

    Over the past few years growing global competition has forced the manufacturing industries to upgrade their old production strategies with the modern day approaches. As a result, recent interest has been developed towards finding an appropriate policy that could enable them to compete with others, and facilitate them to emerge as a market winner. Keeping in mind the abovementioned facts, in this paper the authors have proposed an integrated process planning and scheduling model inheriting the salient features of outsourcing, and leagile principles to compete in the existing market scenario. The paper also proposes a model based on leagile principles, where the integrated planning management has been practiced. In the present work a scheduling problem has been considered and overall minimization of makespan has been aimed. The paper shows the relevance of both the strategies in performance enhancement of the industries, in terms of their reduced makespan. The authors have also proposed a new hybrid Enhanced Swift Converging Simulated Annealing (ESCSA) algorithm, to solve the complex real-time scheduling problems. The proposed algorithm inherits the prominent features of the Genetic Algorithm (GA), Simulated Annealing (SA), and the Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC). The ESCSA algorithm reduces the makespan significantly in less computational time and number of iterations. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm has been shown by comparing the results with GA, SA, Tabu, and hybrid Tabu-SA optimization methods

    Ce-L3-XAS study of the temperature dependence of the 4f occupancy in the Kondo system Ce2Rh3Al9

    We have used temperature dependent x-ray absorption at the Ce-L3 edge to investigate the recently discovered Kondo compound Ce2Rh3Al9. The systematic changes of the spectral lineshape with decreasing temperature are analyzed and found to be related to a change in the 4f4f occupation number, n_f, as the system undergoes a transition into a Kondo state. The temperature dependence of nfn_f indicates a characteristic temperature of 150K, which is clearly related with the high temperature anomaly observed in the magnetic susceptibility of the same system. The further anomaly observed in the resistivity of this system at low temperature (ca. 20K) has no effect on n_f and is thus not of Kondo origin.Comment: 7 pages, three figures, submitted to PR

    Proof of concept study for fuselage boundary layer ingesting propulsion

    Key results from the EU H2020 project CENTRELINE are presented. The research activities undertaken to demonstrate the proof of concept (technology readiness level—TRL 3) for the so-called propulsive fuselage concept (PFC) for fuselage wake-filling propulsion integration are discussed. The technology application case in the wide-body market segment is motivated. The developed performance bookkeeping scheme for fuselage boundary layer ingestion (BLI) propulsion integration is reviewed. The results of the 2D aerodynamic shape optimization for the bare PFC configuration are presented. Key findings from the high-fidelity aero-numerical simulation and aerodynamic validation testing, i.e., the overall aircraft wind tunnel and the BLI fan rig test campaigns, are discussed. The design results for the architectural concept, systems integration and electric machinery pre-design for the fuselage fan turbo-electric power train are summarized. The design and performance implications on the main power plants are analyzed. Conceptual design solutions for the mechanical and aero-structural integration of the BLI propulsive device are introduced. Key heuristics deduced for PFC conceptual aircraft design are presented. Assessments of fuel burn, NOx emissions, and noise are presented for the PFC aircraft and benchmarked against advanced conventional technology for an entry-into-service in 2035.     Stock assessment of Australian east coast snapper, Chrysophrys auratus Predictions of stock status and reference points for 2016

    Snapper, Chrysophrys auratus, is a valuable commercial, recreational and charter fish species throughout its temperate/subtropical range along Australia’s east coast. East coast snapper form a single genetic stock in ocean waters between Mackay (21.50S) in northern Queensland and about Eden (380S) in southern New South Wales. Fish in this eastern coast stock have been recorded to live for up to 41 years, with maturity occurring at four years of age. This is the first assessment for the whole east coast stock. This comprehensive snapper stock assessment includes commercial, recreational and charter data sets from both New South Wales and Queensland (up to 2016). The assessment grouped the dynamics of the fishery into four fishing sectors: namely, 1) New South Wales commercial trap fishing, 2) New South Wales commercial and charter line, 3) Queensland commercial and charter line and 4) New South Wales and Queensland recreational.
