Physiology and molecular biology of aquatic cyanobacteria

Given their importance in carbon and nutrient cycles, cyanobacteria are essential geochemical agents that have shaped the composition of the Earth's crust, oceans and atmosphere for billions of years. The high diversity of cyanobacteria is reflected in the panoply of unique physiological adaptations across the phylum, including different strategies to optimize light harvesting or sustain nitrogen fixation, but also different lifestyles like psychrotrophy, and oligotrophy. Some cyanobacteria produce secondary metabolites of cryptic function, many of which are toxic to eukaryotes. Consequently, bloom-forming toxic cyanobacteria are global hazards that are of increasing concern in surface waters affected by anthropogenic nutrient loads and climate change
Energy-momentum conservation in pre-metric electrodynamics with magnetic charges
A necessary and sufficient condition for energy-momentum conservation is
proved within a topological, pre-metric approach to classical electrodynamics
including magnetic as well as electric charges. The extended Lorentz force,
consisting of mutual actions by F=(E, B) on the electric current and G=(H, D)
on the magnetic current, can be derived from an energy-momentum "potential" if
and only if the constitutive relation G=G(F) satisfies a certain vanishing
condition. The electric-magnetic reciprocity introduced by Hehl and Obukhov is
seen to define a complex structure on the tensor product of 2-form pairs (F,G)
which is independent of but consistent with the Hodge star operator defined by
any Lorentzian metric. Contrary to a recent claim in the literature, it does

Infinite families of superintegrable systems separable in subgroup coordinates
A method is presented that makes it possible to embed a subgroup separable
superintegrable system into an infinite family of systems that are integrable
and exactly-solvable. It is shown that in two dimensional Euclidean or
pseudo-Euclidean spaces the method also preserves superintegrability. Two
infinite families of classical and quantum superintegrable systems are obtained
in two-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space whose classical trajectories and
quantum eigenfunctions are investigated. In particular, the wave-functions are
expressed in terms of Laguerre and generalized Bessel polynomials.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Maxwell's theory on a post-Riemannian spacetime and the equivalence principle
The form of Maxwell's theory is well known in the framework of general
relativity, a fact that is related to the applicability of the principle of
equivalence to electromagnetic phenomena. We pose the question whether this
form changes if torsion and/or nonmetricity fields are allowed for in
spacetime. Starting from the conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic
flux, we recognize that the Maxwell equations themselves remain the same, but
the constitutive law must depend on the metric and, additionally, may depend on
quantities related to torsion and/or nonmetricity. We illustrate our results by
putting an electric charge on top of a spherically symmetric exact solution of
the metric-affine gauge theory of gravity (comprising torsion and

Can Health Care Services Attract Retirees And Contribute to the Economic Sustainability of Rural Places?
The search for engines to power rural economic growth has gone beyond the traditional boundaries of the food and fiber sector to industries such as tourism and to schemes such as attracting metropolitan workers to commuter communities with rural amenities. A group that has been somewhat overlooked is retirees, who may wish to trade in urban or suburban life-styles for a more peaceful rural retirement. An industry that has been neglected is the health care industry, which is the most rapidly growing industry nationally and of particular interest to retirees and aging populations. This paper examines the importance of rural health care services in attracting migrants age 65+ to rural counties in Michigan. Results indicate that the number of health care workers has a positive effect on net in-migration, and that this effect is large and statistically significant for the 70+ age group. Crohn's disease activity index and Vienna classification - Is it worthwhile to calculate before surgery?
Background: Crohn's disease (CD) patients with increased disease activity may reveal an increased risk for perioperative complications. The `Crohn's disease activity index' (CDAI) and the `Vienna classification' (VC) were developed for standardized disease activity estimations. The significance of these scores to predict extent, type and early outcome of surgery in CD patients was analyzed. Methods: In 179 surgically treated CD patients, the CDAI and VC were assessed from a prospective database. Relations of the scores with CD risk factors, type, number, location and complications of surgery were analyzed. Results: VC behavior and location subtypes were associated with distinct types of surgery (i.e. `strictureplasty' in `stricturing disease', `colon surgery' in `colon involvement'), but not with surgery type and extent or outcome. Surgery extent (i.e. with 5 vs. 3 `surgical sites' 425 +/- 25 vs. 223.3 +/- 25) and complications (357.1 +/- 36.9 (with) vs. 244.4 +/- 13 (without)) were associated with elevated CDAI levels; however, nicotine abuse remained the only significant risk factor for perioperative complications after multiple logistic regression. Conclusion: The significance of VC or CDAI for predicting the extent of surgery or complications is limited. None of the tested variables except preoperative nicotine abuse influenced the likelihood for perioperative complications. Copyright (c) 2006 S. Karger AG, Base
