A primer on quantum fluids
This book introduces the theoretical description and properties of quantum
fluids. The focus is on gaseous atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and, to a
minor extent, superfluid helium, but the underlying concepts are relevant to
other forms of quantum fluids such as polariton and photonic condensates. The
book is pitched at the level of advanced undergraduates and early postgraduate
students, aiming to provide the reader with the knowledge and skills to develop
their own research project on quantum fluids. Indeed, the content for this book
grew from introductory notes provided to our own research students. It is
assumed that the reader has prior knowledge of undergraduate mathematics and/or
physics; otherwise, the concepts are introduced from scratch, often with
references for directed further reading.Comment: 132 pages. Published as SpringerBriefs in Physics book. Typos

Oat variety characteristics for suppressing weeds
Oats are a valuable food source and useful in the crop rotation both in organic and conventional farming systems, partly because of their excellent weed suppression ability. Thomas Döring, Louisa Winkler and Nick Fradgley report new results that show how plant breeding can make oats even better
A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF EMPLOYMENT TRENDS IN SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE
The working paper discusses the trends in farm employment over time in South Africa. This is followed by the presentation of six case studies of specific commodities and regions with the view to establishing the potential employment effects of various changes in the policy environment. The article ends with an assessment of selected aspects of the wider environment within which the sector operates, to ascertain the extent to which such policy shifts are feasible, i.e. whether the measured effects in employment generation are likely to happen.Labor and Human Capital,

On Real-Time Synthetic Primate Vision
The primate vision system exhibits numerous capabilities. Some important basic visual competencies include: 1) a consistent representation of visual space across eye movements; 2) egocentric spatial perception; 3) coordinated stereo fixation upon and pursuit of dynamic objects; and 4) attentional gaze deployment. We present a synthetic vision system that incorporates these competencies. We hypothesize that similarities between the underlying synthetic system model and that of the primate vision system elicit accordingly similar gaze behaviors. Psychophysical trials were conducted to record human gaze behavior when free-viewing a reproducible, dynamic, 3D scene. Identical trials were conducted with the synthetic system. A statistical comparison of synthetic and human gaze behavior has shown that the two are remarkably similar
Are probabilities overweighted or underweighted when rare outcomes are experienced (rarely)?
When making decisions involving risky outcomes on the basis of verbal descriptions of the outcomes and their associated probabilities, people behave as if they overweight small probabilities. In contrast, when the same outcomes are instead experienced in a series of samples, people behave as if they underweight small probabilities. We present two experiments showing that the existing explanations of the underweighting observed in decisions from experience are not sufficient to account for the effect. Underweighting was observed when participants experienced representative samples of events, so it cannot be attributed to undersampling of the small probabilities. In addition, earlier samples predicted decisions just as well as later samples did, so underweighting cannot be attributed to recency weighting. Finally, frequency judgments were accurate, so underweighting cannot be attributed to judgment error. Furthermore, we show that the underweighting of small probabilities is also reflected in the best-fitting parameter values obtained when prospect theory, the dominant model of risky choice, is applied to the data
