Energy efficiency for typical 2-floor buildings in Portugal
The purpose of this paper is to develop a relative evaluation, from the energetic point of view, of different building layouts. Buildings can be classified, according to their position within the lot, as perimeter yard buildings, rear yard buildings, and side yard buildings. This classification covers the layout solutions traditionally adopted by architects for 2-floor residential buildings.
The thermal performance of each building layout was evaluated through the quantification of its energetic consumption (per square meter of built area), for the heating and cooling seasons, and according to the geographic orientation. The simulation tool used in this evaluation is based on the Transfer Function Method.
The results obtained showed that the rear yard buildings have the better thermal performance, with an average energy consumption that is around 40% lower than in the other cases. In addition, for all building layouts studied, the North-South orientation requires the minimum energetic consumption to maintain comfortable indoor air temperature.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Diluted antiferromagnet in a ferromagnetic enviroment
The question of robustness of a network under random ``attacks'' is treated
in the framework of critical phenomena. The persistence of spontaneous
magnetization of a ferromagnetic system to the random inclusion of
antiferromagnetic interactions is investigated. After examing the static
properties of the quenched version (in respect to the random antiferromagnetic
interactions) of the model, the persistence of the magnetization is analysed
also in the annealed approximation, and the difference in the results are
discussed

On composite systems of dilute and dense couplings
Composite systems, where couplings are of two types, a combination of strong
dilute and weak dense couplings of Ising spins, are examined through the
replica method. The dilute and dense parts are considered to have independent
canonical disordered or uniform bond distributions; mixing the models by
variation of a parameter alongside inverse temperature we
analyse the respective thermodynamic solutions. We describe the variation in
high temperature transitions as mixing occurs; in the vicinity of these
transitions we exactly analyse the competing effects of the dense and sparse
models. By using the replica symmetric ansatz and population dynamics we
described the low temperature behaviour of mixed systems.Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JPhys

Nutraceutical enrichment of animal feed by filamentous fungi fermentation.
There is an urgent need for improvements in animal production, particularly for ruminants, such that more sustainable and efficient processes are developed for obtaining more nutritious and efficient feeds. Filamentous fungi can add value to residual plant biomass, and may also have the potential to produce metabolites and enrich plant biomasses used in animal nutrition, converting them into nutraceutical sources. Thus, in this work, filamentous fungal fermentation of ruminant feed biomasses commonly used in Brazil was performed, and the enrichment for bioactive metabolites was tested. For this, Fistulina hepatica, Ganoderma lucidum, Pleurotus pulmonarius, Panus lecomtei, and Aspergillus terreus were grown for 28 days on different substrates: starchy grains- (sorghum, oat, and corn), fibrous substrates (coast-cross, rice husk, and moringa plant) and protein-rich substrates (cottonseed cake and pigeon pea plant). Fermented substrates were evaluated for laccase activity, crude protein, -glucan, and lovastatin content
No entanto, houve alta variação no crescimento médio desta cepa.
