Casilla 567, Valdivia, Chile.

TOY: A System for Experimenting with Cooperation of Constraint Domains

    Get PDF
AbstractThis paper presents, from a user point-of-view, the mechanism of cooperation between constraint domains that is currently part of the system TOY, an implementation of a constraint functional logic programming scheme. This implementation follows a cooperative goal solving calculus based on lazy narrowing. It manages the invocation of solvers for each domain, and projection operations for converting constraints into mate domains via mediatorial constraints. We implemented the cooperation among Herbrand, real arithmetic (R), finite domain (FD) and set (S) domains. We provide two mediatorial constraints: The first one relates the numeric domains FD and R, and the second one relates FD and S

Purpose This study aims to discern emerging trends and provide a longitudinal perspective on merchandising research by identifying relationships between merchandising-related subdomains/themes. Design/methodology/approach This study sourced 657 merchandising-related articles published since 1960, from the Scopus database and 425 from Web of Science. After processing and normalizing the data, this study performed co-word and thematic network analyses. Taking a text mining approach, this study used topic modeling to identify a set of coherent topics characterized by the keywords of the articles. Findings This study identified the following merchandising-related themes: branding, retail, consumer, behavior, modeling, textile and clothing industry and visual merchandising. Although visual merchandising was the first type of merchandising to be used in-store, only recently has it become an emerging topic in the academic literature. There has been a further trend over the past decade to understand the adoption of simulation technology, such as computer-aided design, particularly in supply chain management in the clothing industry. These and other findings contribute to the discussion of the merchandising concept, approached from an evolutionary perspective. Research limitations/implications The conclusions of this study hold implications at the intersection of merchandising, sectors, new technologies, research methodologies and merchandising-practitioner education. Research trends suggest that, in the future, virtual reality and augmented reality using neuroscientific methods will be applied to the e-merchandising context. Practical implications The different dimensions of merchandising can be used to leverage store managers’ decision-making process toward an integrated store-management strategy. In particular, by adopting loyalty merchandising tactics, the store can generate emotional attachment among consumers, who will perceive its value and services as unique, thanks to merchandising items designed specifically with that aim in mind. The stimulation of unplanned purchases, the strategic location of products and duration of each merchandising activity in the store, the digitalization of merchandising and the application of findings from neuroscience studies are some of the most relevant practical applications. Originality/value This study provides the first-ever longitudinal review of the state of the art in merchandising research, taking a holistic perspective of this field of knowledge spanning a 60-year period. The work makes a valuable contribution to the development of the marketing discipline.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Birnbaum-Saunders spatial modelling and diagnostics applied to agricultural engineering data

Applications of statistical models to describe spatial dependence in geo-referenced data are widespread across many disciplines including the environmental sciences. Most of these application assume that the data follow a Gaussian distributions. However, in many of them the normality assumption, and even a more general assumption of symmetry, are not appropriate. In non-spatial applications, where the data are uni-modal and positively skewed, the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution has excelled. This paper proposes a spatial log-linear model based in the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution. Model parameters are estimated using the maximum likelihood method. Local influence diagnostics are derived to assess the sensitivity of the estimators to perturbations in the response variable. As illustration, the proposed model and its diagnostics are used to analyse a real-world agricultural data-set, where the spatial variability of phosphorus concentration in the soil is considered- which is extremely important for agricultural management

Clinical, hematological and coagulative changes consequent to antibody level increase in horses destined to antivenom production

The aim of this work consisted to study the clinical and hematological effects that included blood coagulation and antibody production of a group of three horses immunized for the production of monovalent serum against Bothrops alternatus venom, in order to correlate the results with the humoral immune response of the animals. The results showed that immunization of horses with the essayed protocol induce slight clinic alterations and discrete changes in some parameters of the hemogram. Results also showed variations in the neutralizing capacity of the serum on different venom components, particularly toxins that affect blood coagulation. Also, it was verified a direct relationship between the rate of white blood cells and serum immunoglobulin production. Furthermore, they also indicate that the three-month rest period may be considered as too long as it causes a marked decrease in antibody titles, losing the serum its neutralizing capacity to venom compounds. Nevertheless, after re-administration of venom horses provided a rapid reposition of anti-toxins against B. alternatus venom, tolerating high venom doses during this second period of immunization.Fil: Bogado, F.. The scope of this investigation is to develop a material mainly composed (80% w/w) of ceramic wastes that can be applied in the manufacture of road traffic noise reducing devices. The characterization of the product has been carried out attending to its acoustic, physical and mechanical properties, by measuring the sound absorption coefficient at normal incidence, the open void ratio, density and compressive strength. Since the sound absorbing behavior of a porous material is related to the size of the pores and the thickness of the specimen tested, the influence of the particle grain size of the ceramic waste and the thickness of the samples tested on the properties of the final product has been analyzed. The results obtained have been compared to a porous concrete made of crushed granite aggregate as a reference commercial material traditionally used in similar applications. Compositions with coarse particles showed greater sound absorption properties than compositions made with finer particles, besides presenting better sound absorption behavior than the reference porous concrete. Therefore, a ceramic waste-based porous concrete can be potentially recycled in the highway noise barriers field.
