    Different Disease Profiles for Women and Men with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms

    ObjectiveThe overall aim with this study was to investigate causes of death and mortality rates for women and men treated for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in Sweden.Materials and methodAll patients treated for ruptured and non-ruptured AAA 1987–2002 in Sweden were identified in national registries (n=12917). Age, sex, diagnosis, surgical procedure and mortality were analysed on a patient specific level. Logistic regression and analysis of standardised mortality rates (SMR) were performed.ResultsPost operative mortality was similar between the sexes. Age (p<0.0001), and surgery for rupture (p=0.0005), but not gender (p=0.65) were significant risk factor for poor long term survival. SMR revealed increased risk for both sexes compared to the population with significantly higher values for women than men (2.26, CI 2.10–2.43 vs. 1.63, CI 1.57–1.68, p<0.0001). The higher risk for women could be explained by the higher risk for aneurysm related death (ie.thoracic or abdominal aorta) compared to men (Hazard ratio 1.57 vs. 1.0, p<0.0001).ConclusionWomen do not have an increased surgical risk compared to men, but treated women have an increased risk of premature death compared to men and women in the population. They also have a higher risk for aneurysm related death compared to men with AAA

    Multichannel Kondo Screening in a One-Dimensional Correlated Electron System

    We present the exact Bethe Ansatz solution of a multichannel model of one- dimensional correlated electrons coupled antiferromagnetically to a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin S. The solution reveals that interactions in the bulk make the magnetic impurity drive both spin and charge fluctuations, producing a mixed valence at the impurity site, with an associated effective spin S_eff > S in the presence of a magnetic field. The screening of the impurity spin is controlled by its size independently of the number of channels, in contrast to the multichannel Kondo effect for free electrons.Comment: 5 pages Revtex.     One-Dimensional Electron Liquid in an Antiferromagnetic Environment: Spin Gap from Magnetic Correlations

    We study a one-dimensional electron liquid coupled by a weak spin-exchange interaction to an antiferromagnetic spin-S ladder with n legs. A perturbative renormalization group analysis in the semiclassical limit reveals the opening of a spin gap, driven by the local magnetic correlations on the ladder. The effect, which we argue is present for any gapful ladder or gapless ladder with nS≫1nS\gg 1, is enhanced by the repulsive interaction among the conduction electrons but is insensitive to the sign of the spin exchange interaction with the ladder.     The Neuroimmune Response to Surgery – An Exploratory Study of Trauma-Induced Changes in Innate Immunity and Heart Rate Variability

    Surgery triggers a systemic inflammatory response that ultimately impacts the brain and associates with long-term cognitive impairment. Adequate regulation of this immune surge is pivotal for a successful surgical recovery. We explored the temporal immune response in a surgical cohort and its associations with neuroimmune regulatory pathways and cognition, in keeping with the growing body of evidence pointing towards the brain as a regulator of peripheral inflammation. Brain-to-immune communication acts through cellular, humoral and neural pathways. In this context, the vagal nerve and the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) have been shown to modify peripheral immune cell activity in both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. However, the relevance of neuroimmune regulatory mechanisms following a surgical trauma is not yet elucidated. Twenty-five male patients undergoing elective laparoscopic abdominal surgery were included in this observational prospective study. Serial blood samples with extensive immune characterization, assessments of heart rate variability (HRV) and cognitive tests were performed before surgery and continuing up to 6 months post-surgery. Temporal immune responses revealed biphasic reaction patterns with most pronounced changes at 5 hours after skin incision and 14 days following surgery. Estimations of cardiac vagal nerve activity through HRV recordings revealed great individual variations depending on the pre-operative HRV baseline. A principal component analysis displayed distinct differences in systemic inflammatory biomarker trajectories primarily based on pre-operative HRV, with potiential consequences for long-term surgical outcomes. In conclusion, individual pre-operative HRV generates differential response patterns that associate with distinct inflammatory trajectories following surgery. Long-term surgical outcomes need to be examined further in larger studies with mixed gender cohorts

    Antiferromagnetic spin ladders effectively coupled by one-dimensional electron liquids

    We study a model of the stripe state in strongly correlated systems consisting of an array of antiferromagnetic spin ladders, each with nlegn_{leg} legs, coupled to each other through the spin-exchange interaction to charged stripes in between each pair of ladders. The charged stripes are assumed to be Luttinger liquids in a spin-gap regime (Luther-Emery). An effective interaction for a pair of neighboring ladders is calculated by integrating out the gapped spin degree of freedom in the charged stripe. The low energy effective theory of each ladder is the usual nonlinear σ\sigma-model with additional cross couplings of neighboring ladders. These interactions are found to favor either in-phase or anti-phase short range spin orderings depending on whether the charge stripe is site-centered or bond-centered as well as on its filling factor and other physical parameters of the charged stripe.Comment: 4 pages with 1 figure, revised introduction and discussion section

    Quantal phases, disorder effects and superconductivity in spin-Peierls systems

    In view of recent developments in the investigation on cuprate high-Tc{}_{\rm c} superconductors and the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3{}_{3}, we study the effect of dilute impurity doping on the spin-Peierls state in quasi-one dimensional systems.
