On the weak-coupling limit and complete positivity
We consider two non-interacting systems embedded in a heat bath. If they
remain dynamically independent, physical inconsistencies are avoided only if
the single-system reduced dynamics is completely positive also beyond the
weak-coupling limit.Comment: 11 pages, plain-Te
The Step-Harmonic Potential
We analyze the behavior of a quantum system described by a one-dimensional
asymmetric potential consisting of a step plus a harmonic barrier. We solve the
eigenvalue equation by the integral representation method, which allows us to
classify the independent solutions as equivalence classes of homotopic paths in
the complex plane. We then consider the propagation of a wave packet reflected
by the harmonic barrier and obtain an expression for the interaction time as a
function of the peak energy. For high energies we recover the classical
half-period limit.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
Spacetime geometries and light trapping in travelling refractive index perturbations
In the framework of transformation optics, we show that the propagation of a
locally superluminal refractive index perturbation (RIP) in a Kerr medium can
be described, in the eikonal approximation, by means of a stationary metric,
which we prove to be of Gordon type. Under suitable hypotheses on the RIP, we
obtain a stationary but not static metric, which is characterized by an
ergosphere and by a peculiar behaviour of the geodesics, which are studied
numerically, also accounting for material dispersion. Finally, the equation to
be satisfied by an event horizon is also displayed and briefly discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Dark matter effects in vacuum spacetime
We analyze a toy model describing an empty spacetime in which the motion of a
test mass (and the trajectories of photons) evidence the presence of a
continuous and homogeneous distribution of matter; however, since the
energy-momentum tensor vanishes, no real matter or energy distribution is
present at all. Thus, a hypothetical observer will conclude that he is immersed
in some sort of dark matter, even though he has no chance to directly detect
it. This suggests yet another possibility of explaining the elusive dark matter
as a purely dynamical effect due to the curvature of spacetime.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, expanded with comments about the exact motion and

Risk perception of air pollution: A systematic review focused on particulate matter exposure
The adverse health effects of exposure to air pollutants, notably to particulate matter (PM), are well-known, as well as the association with measured or estimated concentration levels. The role of perception can be relevant in exploring effects and pollution control actions. The purpose of this study was to explore studies that analyse people’s perception, together with the measurement of air pollution, in order to elucidate the relationship between them. We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. In March 2020, PubMed, EMBASE, and Scopus databases were explored in an attempt to search for studies published from 2000 to 2020. The review included 38 studies, most of which were conducted in China (n = 13) and the United States (n = 11) and published over the last four years (n = 26). Three studies were multicenter investigations, while five articles were based on a national-level survey. The air quality (AQ) was assessed by monitoring stations (n = 24) or dispersion models (n = 7). Many studies were population questionnaire-based, air monitoring and time-series studies, and web-based investigations. A direct association between exposure and perception emerged in 20 studies. This systematic review has shown that most of the studies establish a relationship between risk perception measurement. A broad spectrum of concepts and notions related to perception also emerged, which is undoubtedly an indicator of the wealth of available knowledge and is promising for future research
Procedures for Converting among Lindblad, Kraus and Matrix Representations of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups
Given an quantum dynamical semigroup expressed as an exponential
superoperator acting on a space of N-dimensional density operators, eigenvalue
methods are presented by which canonical Kraus and Lindblad operator sum
representations can be computed. These methods provide a mathematical basis on
which to develop novel algorithms for quantum process tomography, the
statistical estimation of superoperators and their generators, from a wide
variety of experimental data. Theoretical arguments and numerical simulations
are presented which imply that these algorithms will be quite robust in the
presence of random errors in the data.Comment: RevTeX4, 31 pages, no figures; v4 adds new introduction and a
numerical example illustrating the application of these results to Quantum

On the decay law for unstable open systems
We use (nonconservative) dynamical semigroups to investigate the decay law of
a quantum unstable system weakly coupled with a large environment. We find that
the deviations from the classical exponential law are small and can be safely
ignored in any actual experiment.Comment: 12 pages, plain-TeX, to appear in Phys. Lett.
Complete positivity and correlated neutral kaons
In relation with experiments on correlated kaons at phi-factories, it is
shown that the request of complete positivity is necessary in any physically
consistent description of neutral kaons as open quantum systems.Comment: LaTeX, 9 page
Reply to Comment on: Hawking radiation from ultrashort laser pulse filaments
A comment by R. Schutzhold et al. raises possible concerns and questions
regarding recent measurements of analogue Hawking radiation. We briefly reply
to the opinions expressed in the comment and sustain that the origin of the
radiation may be understood in terms of Hawking emission
