    Urinary hepcidin level as an early predictor of iron deficiency in children: A case control study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The ideal screening test would be capable of identifying iron deficiency in the absence of anemia. We tried to detect role of urinary hepcidin-25 level in early prediction of iron deficiency in children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a case control study performed on 100 children in Hematology Unit of Pediatric Department, Zagazig University Hospital, Egypt. Our study included 25 cases of iron deficiency (ID) stage-1 (iron depletion), 25 cases ID stage-2 (iron-deficient erythropoiesis), 25 cases ID stage-3 (iron deficiency anemia) and 25 healthy children as a control group. Estimation of iron status parameters was done. Urinary hepcidin-25 level was detected.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Urinary hepcidin-25 level was significantly lower in all stages of iron deficiency than in control group, more significant reduction in its level was observed with the progress in severity of iron deficiency. Urinary hepcidin showed significant positive correlation with hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, hematocrit value, serum iron and ferritin and transferrin saturation. In contrary, it showed significant negative correlation with serum transferrin and total iron binding capacity.</p> <p>Urinary hepcidin at cutoff point ≀0.94 nmol/mmol Cr could Predict ID stage-1 with sensitivity 88% and specificity 88%. Cutoff point ≀0.42 nmol/mmol Cr could predict ID stage-2 with sensitivity 96% and specificity 92%. Cutoff point ≀0.08 nmol/mmol Cr could Predict ID stage-3 with Sensitivity 96% and specificity 100%.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We can conclude that detection of urinary hepcidin-25 level was a simple and non invasive test and could predict iron deficiency very early, before appearance of hematological affections.</p

    Interaction of Dioxovanadium (V) ion with L-alanine at Different Ionic Strengths

    The formation constants of species formed in the system H+ + alanine and VO2+ +alanine have been determined in aqueous solution for 1.0&lt;pH&lt;7.0 and at different ionic strengths ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mol dm-3 NaClO4, using a combination of potentiometric and spectrophotometric techniques.The compositions of the formd complexes and their stability constants were determined by curve fitting method and it was shown that dioxivanadium(V) forms two mononuclear 1:1 and 1:2 species with alanineof type VO2L and VO2L2-.The porotonation constant of the amino group of alanine has been determined using potentiometric techniques and calculated using a computer program wich employ a least-squares method. The dependence of the porotonation of alanine and the stability constants of the species on ionic strength are described by a deby-huckel type equation

    COVID-19 related complete blood count changes among asymptomatic pregnant women

    Objective: To evaluate complete blood count (CBC) changes that suggest coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) among asymptomatic pregnant women attending routine antenatal care Methods: A cross-sectional study included 187 healthy pregnant women who were attending the antenatal care clinic of a tertiary University hospital between March and June 2020. After a thorough history and examinations, a venous blood sample was taken from each participant for complete and differential blood counts. Those who showed CBC findings suggestive of COVID-19 were further scheduled for a nasopharyngeal swab for detection of SARS-CoV-2 specific antigens through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: We found 5.3% (n=10) of the study population showed CBC changes that are suggestive of COVID-19. When they were scheduled for nasopharyngeal swab for a PCR confirmatory test, 30% (n=3) of them were PCR positive (which represented 1.6% of the entire study population). The most frequently encountered COVID-19-suggestive change in peripheral blood leukocyte differential counts was leucopenia (100%), followed by decreased eosinophil count (50%), then neutropenia and lymphocytopenia (30%). Conclusions: Certain differential leucocyte count changes (leucopenia, neutropenia, lymphocytopenia and decreased eosinophil count) among asymptomatic pregnant women might be related to COVID-19 infection and may indicate a need for further testing

    An Egyptian green schist palette and an amazonite gemstone from the “Palace of the Copper Axes” at Batrawy, Jordan

    The exploration of the “Palace of the Copper Axes”, the Early Bronze Age III palace of the easternmost city of Southern Levant during the 3rd millennium BC, was resumed in 2018, during the 14th season of excavation at Khirbet al-Batrawy in north-central Jordan, and completed in 2019. In the entrance hall of the palace, a square space with ceilings supported by four pillars, an Egyptian green schist palette, a cyan gemstone of amazonite and a pierced bead of fluorapatite were found buried under the destruction layer, while a barrel-shaped carnelian bead from Mesopotamia was found in the destruction layer just outside the Eastern Pavilion of the palace. These finds again testify to the inclusion of the palace and the city into a wide international trade network and its special connections with Pharaonic Egypt

    Small modular reactor full scope core optimization using Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm

    Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) with their excellent safety and economic features will be in high demand in the near future. Most SMR designs have longer burn-up cycle length with more fuel enrichment and smaller core size in comparison to the large conventional nuclear reactors. The small size of these reactors causes more neutron leakage (less core radius results in a higher area to volume ratio and more relative leakage). This feature of SMRs causes high values of maximum Power Peaking Factors (PPFs) through the core, so optimizing the safety parameters is of high necessity. Also, long burn-up cycle length needs a high initial excess reactivity, which results into use of some materials and methods to control this high excess reactivity. One of these methods is using a high number of Integral Fuel Burnable Absorber (IFBA) rods.In the present designs of IFBA rods, usually some amounts of fuel with lower enrichment are used at the top and bottom parts of the IFBA rods (known as cutback fuel) to flatten the axial PPFs. The small size of the SMRs (using a lower number of FAs) helps to have much less possible radial loading patterns (in comparison to the large reactors) and provides the possibility to optimize the axial variations in amounts of cutback fuel in IFBA rods simultaneously. Accordingly, the best axial and radial loading pattern according to the objective functions could be achieved. At the present work, the main goal is to optimize radial core loading pattern and axial variations of cutback fuel lengths at the IFBA rods of an SMR simultaneously using a multi-objective neutronic and thermal-hydraulic fitness function. The multi-objective fitness function includes burn-up cycle length, Minimum Departure from Nucleate Boiling (MDNBR), maximum and average radial and axial PPFs during the entire cycle lengths. The Cuckoo Optimization Algorithm (COA) as a new robust metaheuristic algorithm with high convergence speed and global optima achievement has been used. For the thermo-neutronic calculation, DRPACO package consists of the coupling system of DRAGON/ PARCS/COBRA codes have been used. Finally, the results of SMR core axial and radial loading pattern optimization using COA presents a core configuration with improvement in the core safety and economic parameters in comparison to the reference SMR cor

    A 10 Year Survey on Childhood CNS Tumors

    AbstractObjectiveTumors of the central nervous system constitute the largest group of solid neoplasms in children and are second only to leukemia in their overall frequency during childhood. The main purpose of the present study is to determine the incidence, age, sex, location and histological diagnosis of CNS tumors in children, less than 15 years of age, in the Mofid Children's Hospital, in the past 10 years. Materials and MethodsIn this descriptive retrospective study we reviewed the medical records of 143 children with diagnosis of CNS tumors admitted during the past 10 years in neurology and surgery departments of Mofid Children's Hospital between the years 1996 and 2006.ResultsDuring the 10 year study period, CNS tumor was diagnosed in 143 patients; of these tumors, 119 were intracranial and 58 were intraspinal; 51.3% of brain tumors were located in the supratentorial and 48.7% in the infratentorial regions. The most common intracranial neoplasms were astrocytic tumors (36.8%), embryonal tumors (31.1%) and ependymal tumors (13.4%). Of the intraspinal neoplasms the most frequently noted were embryonal tumors(37.5%), mesenchymal meningothelial tumors (20.8%), followed by astrocytic tumors (16.7%). The median age at diagnosis was 8.9 ± 4.1 years with a male to female ratio of 1.4:1 (PConclusionBrain tumors in children constitute a diverse group in terms of incidence,distribution and histopathological diagnosis.

    A dynamical model of oncotripsy by mechanical cell fatigue: selective cancer cell ablation by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound

    The method of oncotripsy, first proposed in Heyden & Ortiz (Heyden & Ortiz 2016 J. Mech. Phys. Solids 92, 164–175 (doi:10.1016/j.jmps.2016.04.016)), exploits aberrations in the material properties and morphology of cancerous cells in order to ablate them selectively by means of tuned low-intensity pulsed ultrasound. We propose the dynamical model of oncotripsy that follows as an application of cell dynamics, statistical mechanical theory of network elasticity and ‘birth–death’ kinetics to describe the processes of damage and repair of the cytoskeleton. We also develop a reduced dynamical model that approximates the three-dimensional dynamics of the cell and facilitates parametric studies, including sensitivity analysis and process optimization. We show that the dynamical model predicts—and provides a conceptual basis for understanding—the oncotripsy effect and other trends in the data of Mittelstein et al. (Mittelstein et al. 2019 Appl. Phys. Lett. 116, 013701 (doi:10.1063/1.5128627)), for cells in suspension, including the dependence of cell-death curves on cell and process parameters
