Phase Change Observed in Ultrathin Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 Films by in-situ Resonant Photoemission Spectroscopy
Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3
(100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by
measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band
region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low
temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral
structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers)
Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for
phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. This may be ascribed mainly to
the intrinsic size effects.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure
Electronic structure of spinel-type LiV_2O_4
The band structure of the cubic spinel compound LiV_2O_4, which has been
reported recently to show heavy Fermion behavior, has been calculated within
the local-density approximation using a full-potential version of the linear
augmented-plane-wave method. The results show that partially-filled V 3d bands
are located about 1.9 eV above the O 2p bands and the V 3d bands are split into
a lower partially-filled t_{2g} complex and an upper unoccupied e_{g} manifold.
The fact that the conduction electrons originate solely from the t_{2g} bands
suggests that the mechanism for the mass enhancement in this system is
different from that in the 4f heavy Fermion systems, where these effects are
attributed to the hybridization between the localized 4f levels and itinerant
spd bands.Comment: 5 pages, revte
Two-Fermi-surface superconducting state and a nodal d-wave gap in the electron-doped Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d) cuprate superconductor
We report on laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES)
in the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4-d). The data show the
existence of a nodal hole-pocket Fermi-surface both in the normal and
superconducting states. We prove that its origin is long-range
antiferromagnetism by an analysis of the coherence factors in the main and
folded bands. This coexistence of long-range antiferromagnetism and
superconductivity implies that electron-doped cuprates are two-Fermi-surface
superconductors. The measured superconducting gap in the nodal hole-pocket is
compatible with a d-wave symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted to Phys. Rev. Let
Orbital Symmetry and Electron Correlation in Na_{x}CoO_2
Measurements of polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption reveal that the
electronic states determining the low-energy excitations of NaCoO
have predominantly symmetry with significant O character. A large
transfer of spectral weight observed in O x-ray absorption provides
spectral evidence for strong electron correlations in the layered cobaltates.
Comparing Co x-ray absorption with calculations based on a cluster model,
we conclude that NaCoO exhibits a charge-transfer electronic
character rather than a Mott-Hubbard character
Spectral functions for strongly correlated 5f-electrons
We calculate the spectral functions of model systems describing 5f-compounds
adopting Cluster Perturbation Theory. The method allows for an accurate
treatment of the short-range correlations. The calculated excitation spectra
exhibit coherent 5f bands coexisting with features associated with local
intra-atomic transitions. The findings provide a microscopic basis for partial
localization. Results are presented for linear chains.Comment: 10 Page
Electronic structure of NiS_{1-x}Se_x
We investigate the electronic structure of the metallic NiSSe
system using various electron spectroscopic techniques. The band structure
results do not describe the details of the spectral features in the
experimental spectrum, even for this paramagnetic metallic phase. However, a
parameterized many-body multi-band model is found to be successful in
describing the Ni~2 core level and valence band, within the same model. The
asymmetric line shape as well as the weak intensity feature in the Ni~2 core
level spectrum has been ascribed to extrinsic loss processes in the system. The
presence of satellite features in the valence band spectrum shows the existence
of the lower Hubbard band, deep inside the metallic regime, consistent
with the predictions of the dynamical mean field theory.Comment: To be published in Physical Review B, 18 pages and 5 figure
Disorder Effects in the Bipolaron System TiO Studied by Photoemission Spectroscopy
We have performed a photoemission study of TiO around its two
transition temperatures so as to cover the metallic, high-temperature
insulating (bipolaron-liquid), and low-temperature insulating
(bipolaron-crystal) phases. While the spectra of the low-temperature insulating
phase show a finite gap at the Fermi level, the spectra of the high-temperature
insulating phase are gapless, which is interpreted as a soft Coulomb gap due to
dynamical disorder. We suggest that the spectra of the high-temperature
disordered phase of FeO, which exhibits a charge order-disorder
transition (Verwey transition), can be interpreted in terms of a Coulomb gap.Comment: 4 pages, 3 epsf figures embedde
