Isolation of a photosystem 2 preparation from higher plants with highly enriched oxygen evolution activity
AbstractDetergent-treatment of higher plant thylakoids with Triton X-100 at pH 6.3 has been used to purify a PS2 fraction with very high rates of oxygen evolution (1000 ÎŒmol.mg chlâ1.hâ1). A photosynthetic unit size of about 300 chlorophyll (chl) molecules has been determined by optical methods, suggesting an average turnover time for PS2 of about 2 ms. The donor system for P680+ is particularly well preserved in the preparation, as judged by P680+ reduction kinetics, the detection by EPR of Signal IILT and the presence of the high potential form of cytochrome b-559 (at a ratio of 1:1 with the reaction centre)
An investigation into the pathogenesis of vulvo-vaginal candidosis
OBJECTIVE: To monitor yeasts isolated from women during and between episodes of recurrent
vulvo-vaginal candidosis (VVC) to determine whether vaginal relapse or re-infection occurred.
METHODS:Women presenting at the genitourinary medicine clinic with signs and symptoms of VVC
were recruited to the study (n = 121). A vaginal washing, high vaginal swab (HVS) and rectal swab
were taken and the women treated with a single 500 mg clotrimazole pessary.Women were asked to
re-attend after 1, 4, and 12 weeks, or when the VVC recurred, when vaginal washings and HVS were
repeated. Candida isolates recovered were strain typed using the Ca3 probe and their similarity
assessed. Antifungal susceptibility to fluconazole and clotrimazole were determined.
RESULTS: Of the women recruited, 47 completed the study, either returning for four visits or suffering
a recurrence during the study period. Of the 22 women who experienced recurrence, the
same strain was responsible for the initial and recurrent episode in 17 women. For the remaining
five women, four had strain replacement and one had a change of species. None of the isolates
recovered from the women demonstrated resistance to either clotrimazole or fluconazole.
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the theory of vaginal relapse and thus may support the use
of more prolonged courses of antifungal therapy initially to increase the chances of eradication of
the yeast
Groundwater chemistry in the vicinity of the Puna Geothermal Venture power plant, Hawaii, after two decades of production
For more information on the USGSâthe Federal source for science about the Earth, its natural and living resources, natural hazards, and the environmentâvisit http://www.usgs.gov/ or call 1â888âASKâUSGS (1â888â275â8747).We report chemical data for selected shallow wells and coastal springs that were sampled in 2014 to determine whether geothermal power production in the Puna area over the past two decades has affected the characteristics of regional groundwater. The samples were analyzed for major and minor chemical species, trace metals of environmental concern, stable isotopes of water, and two organic compounds (pentane and isopropanol) that are injected into the deep geothermal reservoir at the power plant. Isopropanol was not detected in any of the groundwaters; confirmed detection of pentane was restricted to one monitoring well near the power plant at a low concentration not indicative of source. Thus, neither organic compound linked geothermal operations to groundwater contamination, though chemical stability and transport velocity questions exist for both tracers. Based on our chemical analysis of geothermal fluid at the power plant and on many similar results from commercially analyzed samples, we could not show that geothermal constituents in the groundwaters we sampled came from the commercially developed reservoir. Our data are consistent with a long-held view that heat moves by conduction from the geothermal reservoir into shallow groundwaters through a zone of low permeability rock that blocks passage of geothermal water. The data do not rule out all impacts of geothermal production on groundwater. Removal of heat during production, for example, may be responsible for minor changes that have occurred in some groundwater over time, such as the decline in temperature of one monitoring well near the power plant. Such indirect impacts are much harder to assess, but point out the need for an ongoing groundwater monitoring program that should include the coastal springs down-gradient from the power plant
Universal Holographic Chiral Dynamics in an External Magnetic Field
In this work we further extend the investigation of holographic gauge
theories in external magnetic fields, continuing earlier work. We study the
phenomenon of magnetic catalysis of mass generation in 1+3 and 1+2 dimensions,
using D3/D7- and D3/D5-brane systems, respectively. We obtain the low energy
effective actions of the corresponding pseudo Goldstone bosons and study their
dispersion relations. The D3/D7 system exhibits the usual
Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner (GMOR) relation and a relativistic dispersion
relation, while the D3/D5 system exhibits a quadratic non-relativistic
dispersion relation and a modified linear GMOR relation. The low energy
effective action of the D3/D5 system is related to that describing magnon
excitations in a ferromagnet. We also study properties of general Dp/Dq systems
in an external magnetic field and verify the universality of the magnetic
catalysis of dynamical symmetry breaking.Comment: 41 pages, 11 figures, references adde
Is group psychotherapy feasible for oncology outpatients attenders selected on the basis of psychological morbidity?
Of 120 consecutive attenders at an oncology outpatients department, 108 were screened for psychological symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (Zigmond & Snaith, 1983). Thirty-nine patients had significant scores indicating moderate anxiety and/or depression. We felt that this warranted an offer of group psychotherapy in the belief that sharing issues and exploring personal concerns may alleviate some of the experienced psychological distress. Only 10 patients consented to and were able to attend this group, with which five patients persisted. Thus in this group of patients with advanced cancer group psychotherapy was applicable only to a limited number of selected patients. The nature of this study and the size of the population markedly limited our ability to comment on the usefulness of group psychotherapy. Many patients, particularly the most severely psychologically distressed, continued to require other forms of support, particularly domiciliary individual therapy
Rapid electron transfer reactions associated with oxygen evolution in photosystem II preparations from spinach and Phormidium laminosum
AbstractWe have measured the nanosecond kinetics of Chl-a+II reduction in oxygen-evolving detergent preparations of PS II from the cyanobacterium Phormidium laminosum and from higher plants (spinach) at 824 and 680 nm. Compared to earlier studies at 680 nm with higher plant material, we obtained an improved signal: noise ratio for measurements on a ns to ms time scale. The kinetics of Chl-a+II reduction in the ns range are consistent in the two preparations and are comparable to other studies of higher plant and cyanobacterial material. The ns kinetics are tightly connected to the ability for O2 evolution. Analysis of the ÎŒs kinetics indicates three phases: (a) the slow phase (t12 ~ 150 ÎŒs in spinach and ~ 500 ÎŒs in Phormidium) reflects the back reaction between Chl-a+II and Qâ; (b) the phase with t125â10 ÎŒs is probably due to a donor which is not connected to an intact water oxidation system; (c) the intermediate ÎŒs component (t12 30â40 ÎŒs) may be related to water oxidation
Mineral resource information in support of national, regional and local planning : Devon (comprising Devon, Plymouth, Torbay, Dartmoor National Park and part of Exmoor National Park)
This report is one of a series prepared by the British Geological Survey for various administrative areas in England for the Office of the Deputy Prime Ministerâs research project Mineral Resource Information in Support of National, Regional and Local Planning.
The accompanying maps relate to the county of Devon and delineates the mineral resources of current, or potential, economic interest in the area and the sites where minerals are or have been worked. It also relates these to national planning designations, which may represent constraints on the extraction of minerals.
Three major elements of information are presented:
âą the geological distribution and importance of mineral resources;
âą the extent of mineral planning permissions and the location of current mineral workings; and
âą the extent of selected, nationally-designated planning constraints.
This wide range of information, much of which is scattered and not always available in a consistent and convenient form, is presented on two digitally-generated summary map on the scale of 1:100 000. This scale is convenient for the overall display of the data and allows for a legible topographic base on which to depict the information. However, all the data are held digitally at larger scales using a Geographical Information System (GIS), which allows easy revision, updating and customisation of the information together with its possible integration with other datasets. The information will form part of a Summary of the Mineral Resources of the South West Region.
The purpose of the work is to assist all interested parties involved in the preparation and review of development plans, both in relation to the extraction of minerals and the protection of mineral resources from sterilisation. It provides a knowledge base, in a consistent format, on the nature and extent of mineral resources and the environmental constraints, which may affect their extraction. An important objective is to provide baseline data for the long term. The results may also provide a starting point for discussion on specific planning proposals for minerals extraction or on proposals, which may sterilise resources.
It is anticipated that the map and report will also provide valuable background data for a much wider audience, including the different sectors of the minerals industry, other agencies and authorities (e.g. The Planning Inspectorate Agency, the Environment Agency, The Countryside Agency and English Nature), environmental interests and the general public.
Basic mineral resource information is essential to support mineral exploration and development activities, for resource management and land-use planning, and to establish baseline data for environmental impact studies and environmental guidelines. It also enables a more sustainable pattern and standard of development to be achieved by valuing mineral resources as national assets.
The mineral resources covered are sand and gravel, crushed rock aggregate, brick clay, kaolin, ball clay, building stones, hydrocarbons and metalliferous mineralisation
Steady and Stable: Numerical Investigations of Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations
Excerpt: Mathematics is a language which can describe patterns in everyday life as well as abstract concepts existing only in our minds. Patterns exist in data, functions, and sets constructed around a common theme, but the most tangible patterns are visual. Visual demonstrations can help undergraduate students connect to abstract concepts in advanced mathematical courses. The study of partial differential equations, in particular, benefits from numerical analysis and simulation
Glueballs of Super Yang-Mills from Wrapped Branes
In this paper we study qualitative features of glueballs in N=1 SYM for
models of wrapped branes in IIA and IIB backgrounds. The scalar mode, 0++ is
found to be a mixture of the dilaton and the internal part of the metric. We
carry out the numerical study of the IIB background. The potential found
exhibits a mass gap and produces a discrete spectrum without any cut-off. We
propose a regularization procedure needed to make these states normalizable.Comment: 22 pages plus a appendixes, 2 figure
Ab initio calculation of the neutron-proton mass difference
The existence and stability of atoms rely on the fact that neutrons are more
massive than protons. The measured mass difference is only 0.14\% of the
average of the two masses. A slightly smaller or larger value would have led to
a dramatically different universe. Here, we show that this difference results
from the competition between electromagnetic and mass isospin breaking effects.
We performed lattice quantum-chromodynamics and quantum-electrodynamics
computations with four nondegenerate Wilson fermion flavors and computed the
neutron-proton mass-splitting with an accuracy of kilo-electron volts,
which is greater than by standard deviations. We also determine the
splittings in the , , and isospin multiplets,
exceeding in some cases the precision of experimental measurements.Comment: 57 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, revised versio
