    No full text
Over the last two decades, mining and mineral exploration companies have adopted various environmental management practices in response to society's pressure for better environmental protection. The literature highlights a number of benefits and challenges for companies adopting environmental management practices with the Greek Mining and Mineral Industry (GMMI) facing similar issues. In order to analyze the challenges faced by the GMMI, a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis was conducted, which examined the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats faced by the industry when adopting environmental management practices. The analysis prescribes policy recommendations both for the government and industry which, if adopted, could facilitate improved environmental performance.Environmental management practices Mining and mineral industry SWOT analysis Greece

Towards a generally accepted CSR accounting framework: a literature mapping

The measuring of CSR performance is high priority in the research agenda of academics. To this end, several methodological frameworks and approaches have been recommended. These frameworks can be divided in two categories: single indicators and composite indexes. This pluralism in the definitions, while enhancing the academic debate, cancels the core requirements of a generally accepted methodological framework: comparability, transparency and credibility. In this context and in order to reduce the associated ambiguity, this paper proposes the following: an analysis of the reasons causing the variety of indicators; a presentation of a mapping of literature for measuring CSR in order to clarify the key points; the highlighting of important issues for future research in order to achieve a generally accepted methodology for measuring CSR.corporate social responsibility; CSR performance; accounting methods; composite CSR indicators; corporate sustainability; sustainable development; performance measurement.

The opportunities and challenges for a general definition of corporate sustainability

    No full text
In recent years, academics and corporate analysts have suggested that the business world should incorporate sustainable development into their decision making, given that it is considered key to their long-term viability. The corporations which implement such strategies are usually labelled sustainable. In this paper, a number of definitions of corporate sustainability, each with different meanings, are presented; this variety has been transferred from the macroeconomic level (where this concept originated) and can now also be found at the microeconomic level. In order to clarify this ambiguity in meaning, the existence of which underlines the need to create a general definition, this paper has two aims: (1) to present a mapping for categorising the current definitions of corporate sustainability and tracing their origin and (2) to choose the most predominant definition and examine the opportunities, challenges, conflicts and efficient conditions which arise to develop a general definition of corporate sustainability.corporate sustainability; definitions; sustainable development; green firms; eco-efficient firms; green economics.
