Development of Hybrid Teaching Method Using MOOCs

    Get PDF
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore a new teaching and learning method using MOOC as a way of solving the change of the educational environment and the learner 's unsatisfied academic desire. This study suggests 'Hybrid teaching method' as a way to utilize MOOC in liberal arts education. This teaching method is a method of perfect learning through formal learning and informal learning. Formal learning consisted of a teacher -centered knowledge acquisition stage and a learner -centered thinking extension stage. Informal learning consists of learner -led experience/reflection stages. It is a characteristic of 'Hybrid teaching method' that emphasizes the role of instructor, breaks the boundaries of education space through informal learning, and implements perfect learning through level learning. This study is meaningful that the MOOC has provided a detailed plan to utilize it in the curriculum of the university. We hope that the 'Hybrid teaching method' using MOOCs will be a way to adapt and lead the liberal education to the future education trends as a customized learning according to the development of science and technology, destruction of spatial areas such as online and offline, emphasis on connection between theory and reality through formal learning and informal learning

Yongdamsagan-tang, a traditional herbal formula, is used widely for the treatment of inflammation and viral diseases. In this study, we investigated whether Yongdamsagan-tang water extract (YSTE) affects testosterone propionate- (TP-) induced benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in a rat model. To induce BPH, rats were injected subcutaneously with 10 mg/kg of TP every day. YSTE was administrated daily by oral gavage at doses of 200 and 500 mg/kg along with the TP injection. After 4 weeks, prostates were collected, weighed, and analyzed. The relative prostrate weight was significantly lower in both YSTE groups (200 and 500 mg/kg/day) compared with the TP-induced BPH group. YSTE administration reduced the expression of proliferation markers PCNA, cyclin D1, and Ki-67 and the histological abnormalities observed in the prostate in TP-induced BPH rats. YSTE attenuated the increase in the TP-induced androgen concentration in the prostate. The YSTE groups also showed decreased lipid peroxidation and increased glutathione reductase activity in the prostate. These findings suggest that YSTE effectively prevented the development of TP-induced BPH in rats through antiproliferative and antioxidative activities and might be useful in the clinical treatment of BPH

Delirium is strongly associated with poor surgical outcomes. This study evaluated the association between pre-operative medication use and post-operative delirium (POD) in surgical oncology patients receiving comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA). Methods A total of 475 patients who were scheduled for cancer surgery and received CGA from January 2014 to June 2015 were included. Pre-operative medication review through CGA was conducted on polypharmacy (≥5 medications), delirium-inducing medications (DIMs), fall-inducing medications (FIMs), and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). POD was confirmed by psychiatric consultation, and DSM-V criteria were used for diagnosing delirium. The model fit of the prediction model was assessed by computing the Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. Effect size was measured using the Nagelkerke R2. Discrimination of the model was assessed by an analysis of the area under receiver operating curve (AUROC). Results Two models were constructed for multivariate analysis based on univariate analysis; model I included dementia and DIM in addition to age and sex, and model II included PIM instead of DIM of model I. Every one year increase of age increased the risk of POD by about 1.1-fold. DIM was a significant factor for POD after adjusting for confounders (AOR 12.78, 95 % CI 2.83-57.74). PIM was also a significant factor for POD (AOR 5.53, 95 % CI 2.03-15.05). The Hosmer-Lemeshow test results revealed good fits for both models (χ2 = 3.842, p = 0.871 for model I and χ2 = 8.130, p = 0.421 for model II). The Nagelkerke R2 effect size and AUROC for model I was 0.215 and 0.833, respectively. Model II had the Nagelkerke R2effect size of 0.174 and AUROC of 0.819. Conclusions These results suggest that pharmacists comprehensive review for pre-operative medication use is critical for the post-operative outcomes like delirium in older patients

Dietary pattern and health-related quality of life among breast cancer survivors

Background There is limited evidence for the association between dietary pattern and quality of life among breast cancer survivors. We examined the association between dietary patterns and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Korean breast cancer survivors. Methods Our study included a total of 232 women, aged 21 to 79 years, who had been diagnosed with stage I to III breast cancer and who underwent breast cancer surgery at least 6 months prior to our baseline evaluation. We assessed HRQoL using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30 (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Quality of Life Questionnaire Breast Cancer Module 23 (QLQ-BR23). We conducted a factor analysis to identify the major dietary patterns and used a generalized linear model to obtain the least squares mean (LS mean) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for HRQoL according to the dietary pattern scores. Results We identified 2 major dietary patterns: the Healthy dietary pattern and the Western dietary pattern. We found that breast cancer survivors who had higher Healthy dietary pattern scores tended to have lower dyspnea scores but higher insomnia scores, compared to breast cancer survivors with lower Healthy dietary pattern scores. For dyspnea, the LS mean (95% CI) was 8.86 (5.05-15.52) in the bottom quartile and 2.87 (1.62-5.08) in the top quartile (p for trend = 0.005). This association was limited to survivors with stage I for dyspnea or survivors with stage II or III for insomnia. Conclusions Healthy dietary patterns were associated with better scores for dyspnea but worse scores for insomnia among breast cancer survivors. Other components of EORTC QLQ did not vary by dietary patterns overall, but they warrant further investigation for subgroups of breast cancer survivors. This research was supported by the Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning (NRF-2014R1A2A2A01007794). Valence states and spin structure of spinel FeV2O4 with different orbital degrees of freedom

The electronic structure of spinel FeV2O4, which contains two Jahn-Teller active Fe and V ions, has been investigated by employing soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). XAS indicates that V ions are trivalent and Fe ions are nearly divalent. The signs of V and Fe 2p XMCD spectra are opposite to each other. It is found that the effect of the V 3d spin-orbit interaction on the V 2p XMCD spectrum is negligible, indicating that the orbital ordering of V t2g states occurs from the real orbital states and that the orbital moment of a V3+ ion is mostly quenched. NMR shows that V spins are canted to have a Yafet-Kittel-type triangular spin configuration
