Security and defence of mobile systems under impact

The Group “Dynamics and Fracture of Structural Elements” offers its experience in Solid Mechanics analysis for the study of the impact protection of vehicles, aircrafts and persons. The Group activities have a strong research component, in which numerical simulation tools as well as sophisticated experimental techniques are employed. A Re-Examination of the Philosophy Curriculum in Catholic Higher Education

Psycholinguistics and seniors’ EFL

This contribution presents the epistemological underpinnings of the methodology that has been used in the University of Córdoba (Spain) for teaching English as a foreign language to seniors (over 50) for the last four years. The method is based on the scientific evidence provided by the most recent insight achieved within psycholinguistics and the cognitive theory of learning. The results of this experience reveal that this method specially favors EFL processes by reducing the social distance of seniors towards L2 by means of a direct access to the explicit and declarative knowledge of the target language.Esta contribución presenta los presupuestos epistemológicos de la metodología usada en la Universidad de Córdoba (España) para enseñar inglés como lengua extranjera a los estudiantes senior (más de 50 años) durante los últimos cuatro años. El método se basa en la evidencia científica proporcionada por los más recientes avances alcanzados en el ámbito de la psicolingüística y la teoría cognitiva del aprendizaje. Los resultados de esta experiencia revelan que este método favorece especialmente los procesos de aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera mediante la reducción de la distancia social de los aprendices adultos hacia la L2 a través del acceso directo al conocimiento explícito y declarativo de la lengua destino

The GW/WG repeats of Drosophila GW182 function as effector motifs for miRNA-mediated repression

The control of messenger RNA (mRNA) function by micro RNAs (miRNAs) in animal cells requires the GW182 protein. GW182 is recruited to the miRNA repression complex via interaction with Argonaute protein, and functions downstream to repress protein synthesis. Interaction with Argonaute is mediated by GW/WG repeats, which are conserved in many Argonaute-binding proteins involved in RNA interference and miRNA silencing, from fission yeast to mammals. GW182 contains at least three effector domains that function to repress target mRNA. Here, we analyze the functions of the N-terminal GW182 domain in repression and Argonaute1 binding, using tethering and immunoprecipitation assays in Drosophila cultured cells. We demonstrate that its function in repression requires intact GW/WG repeats, but does not involve interaction with the Argonaute1 protein, and is independent of the mRNA polyadenylation status. These results demonstrate a novel role for the GW/WG repeats as effector motifs in miRNA-mediated repression

The skin of Cartagena

[ESP] La ciudad, como casi todos los seres vivos, encuentra natural avisar de sí misma a través de la apariencia de su piel. Pero, para tener piel, la ciudad debe haber sido capaz de producir estímulos que trasciendan su interior para depositarse fuera. La ciudad orgánica proviene de la intención y del tiempo, su efecto conjunto ha dado lugar a combinaciones capaces de manifestar los tonos, matices, lisuras y relieves que subyacen en el interior de sus arquitecturas. Cartagena es una ciudad orgánica; su organicismo se manifiesta en su historia, en la superposición de sus estratos desde hace más de dos mil años. Cartagena es heterogénea, plástica, colorista y algo desaliñada. Tiene un cierto carácter colonial y decadente propio de ciudad portuaria. El mérito de su piel está en haber sido capaz de reunir el pasado y el presente en una apariencia con calidad convincente. Podríamos decir que la piel de Cartagena es sobre todo ciudadana, encontramos en ella coherencia; la piel de Cartagena es también la piel de la gente que la quiso, la piel de la ciudad que vive y deja vivir. [ENG] The city, like almost all living beings, is a natural warning of itself through the appearance of your skin. But to have skin, the city must have been able to produce stimuli that transcend deposited inside to outside.
