    Single Multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction To Detect Diverse Loci Associated with Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli

    We developed and tested a single multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that detects enterotoxigenic, enteropathogenic, enteroinvasive, and Shiga-toxin–producing Escherichia coli. This PCR is specific, sensitive, and rapid in detecting target isolates in stool and food. Because of its simplicity, economy, and efficiency, this protocol warrants further evaluation in large, prospective studies of polymicrobial substances

    The mechanism of Fe induced bond stability of uranyl( v )

    The stabilization of uranyl(V) (UO21+) by Fe(II) in natural systems remains an open question in uranium chemistry. Stabilization of UVO21+ by Fe(II) against disproportionation was also demonstrated in molecular complexes. However, the relation between the Fe(II) induced stability and the change of the bonding properties have not been elucidated up to date. We demonstrate that U(V) – oaxial bond covalency decreases upon binding to Fe(II) inducing redirection of electron density from the U(V) – oaxial bond towards the U(V) – equatorial bonds thereby increasing bond covalency. Our results indicate that such increased covalent interaction of U(V) with the equatorial ligands resulting from iron binding lead to higher stability of uranyl(V). For the first time a combination of U M4,5 high energy resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure (HR-XANES) and valence band resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (VB-RIXS) and ab initio multireference CASSCF and DFT based computations were applied to establish the electronic structure of iron-bound uranyl(V)

    Quality of Work Life and Mental Health in Primary Care Physicians

    AbstractThe aim of this study was to find the relationship between the perception of Quality of Work Life (QWL) and the mental health of primary care physicians of a public health institution in Guadalajara, Mexico. The study was analytical and was carried out with a universe of 818 doctors from 92 health units and the probability sample of 154 people. In all of them, CVT-GOHISALO and Goldberg GHQ-28 questionnaires were applied in order to measure their perception of QWL and the risk of mental illness respectively. Both instruments were selected because of their high reliability. We measured the satisfaction of the people interviewed for each one of the seven dimensions of CVT-GOHISALO and related to the points assigned to GHQ-28 case or not to consider the case of mental illness. The percentages of dissatisfaction with the QWL were greater than 12% in all dimensions of the instrument, being the highest value of 20.5% dissatisfaction for the job satisfaction dimension. In the classification of the case or not according to the GHQ-28, 22% were considered cases and 78% non-cases. We sought correspondence of satisfaction with the QWL by dimensions and non-case of Goldberg's, as well as dissatisfaction with the QWL and Goldberg's case, finding a clear link between being satisfied and having mental health. All dimensions have a correspondence that goes from 79.7% to 82.3% between satisfaction and non-case, being in all the statistical significance value less than 0.05 For primary care physicians in the studied institution, there is a clear relationship between being satisfied with the QWL and present less risk of mental illness. It is alarming that the medical staff presents high rates of dissatisfaction with the QWL and risk of mental illness. It is necessary to provide preventive programs among health care workers in order to improve their QWL and mental health

    Search for daily modulation of MeV dark matter signals with DAMIC-M

    Dark matter (DM) particles with sufficiently large cross sections may scatter as they travel through Earth’s bulk. The corresponding changes in the DM flux give rise to a characteristic daily modulation signal in detectors sensitive to DM-electron interactions. Here, we report results obtained from the first underground operation of the DAMIC-M prototype detector searching for such a signal from DM with MeV-scale mass. A model-independent analysis finds no modulation in the rate of 1 e− events with sidereal period, where a DM signal would appear. We then use these data to place exclusion limits on DM in the mass range Âœ0.53; 2.7 MeV=c2 interacting with electrons via a dark photon mediator. Taking advantage of the time-dependent signal we improve by ∌2 orders of magnitude on our previous limit obtained from the total rate of 1 e− events, using the same dataset. This daily modulation search represents the current strongest limit on DM-electron scattering via ultralight mediators for DM masses around 1 MeV=cÂČ.I. F. C.     Diplopia is frequent and associated with motor and non-motor severity in parkinson's disease : Results from the COPPADIS cohort at 2-year follow-up

    Background and objective: Diplopia is relatively common in Parkinson's disease (PD) but is still understudied. Our aim was to analyze the frequency of diplopia in PD patients from a multicenter Spanish cohort, to compare the frequency with a control group, and to identify factors associated with it. Patients and Methods: PD patients who were recruited from January 2016 to November 2017 (baseline visit; V0) and evaluated again at a 2-year ± 30 days follow-up (V2) from 35 centers of Spain from the COPPADIS cohort were included in this longitudinal prospective study. The patients and controls were classified as "with diplopia" or "without diplopia" according to item 15 of the Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) at V0, V1 (1-year ± 15 days), and V2 for the patients and at V0 and V2 for the controls. Results: The frequency of diplopia in the PD patients was 13.6% (94/691) at V0 (1.9% in controls [4/206]; p < 0.0001), 14.2% (86/604) at V1, and 17.1% (86/502) at V2 (0.8% in controls [1/124]; p < 0.0001), with a period prevalence of 24.9% (120/481). Visual hallucinations at any visit from V0 to V2 (OR = 2.264; 95%CI, 1.269-4.039; p = 0.006), a higher score on the NMSS at V0 (OR = 1.009; 95%CI, 1.012-1.024; p = 0.015), and a greater increase from V0 to V2 on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale-III (OR = 1.039; 95%CI, 1.023-1.083; p < 0.0001) and Neuropsychiatric Inventory (OR = 1.028; 95%CI, 1.001-1.057; p = 0.049) scores were independent factors associated with diplopia (R = 0.25; Hosmer and Lemeshow test, p = 0.716). Conclusions: Diplopia represents a frequent symptom in PD patients and is associated with motor and non-motor severity

    Measurement of the cross-section and charge asymmetry of WW bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    This paper presents measurements of the W+→Ό+ÎœW^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu and W−→Ό−ΜW^- \rightarrow \mu^-\nu cross-sections and the associated charge asymmetry as a function of the absolute pseudorapidity of the decay muon. The data were collected in proton--proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 20.2~\mbox{fb^{-1}}. The precision of the cross-section measurements varies between 0.8% to 1.5% as a function of the pseudorapidity, excluding the 1.9% uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The charge asymmetry is measured with an uncertainty between 0.002 and 0.003. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations with various parton distribution functions and have the sensitivity to discriminate between them.Comment: 38 pages in total, author list starting page 22, 5 figures, 4 tables, submitted to EPJC.     Search for chargino-neutralino production with mass splittings near the electroweak scale in three-lepton final states in √s=13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for supersymmetry through the pair production of electroweakinos with mass splittings near the electroweak scale and decaying via on-shell W and Z bosons is presented for a three-lepton final state. The analyzed proton-proton collision data taken at a center-of-mass energy of √s=13  TeV were collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139  fb−1. A search, emulating the recursive jigsaw reconstruction technique with easily reproducible laboratory-frame variables, is performed. The two excesses observed in the 2015–2016 data recursive jigsaw analysis in the low-mass three-lepton phase space are reproduced. Results with the full data set are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations. They are interpreted to set exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level on simplified models of chargino-neutralino pair production for masses up to 345 GeV
