Gray's Elegy Argument has been regarded not only as the most puzzling passage in 'On Denoting', but as the greatest riddle within the field of Analytic Philosophy, which racks every interpreter's brain. But it is not impossible to realize the Argument consistently if we take notice of the two difficulties which Russell points out in paragraph twenty. The first difficulty consist in the distinction between meaning and denotation in a denoting phrase, and the second in the relation of meaning and denotation. The phase contrast of these two difficulties can make clear the equivocality of the symbol C, that C stands for denoting phrase in the first phase, and, on the contrary, that C stands for meaning in the second phase
