Flavour-conserving oscillations of Dirac-Majorana neutrinos
We analyze both chirality-changing and chirality-preserving transitions of
Dirac-Majorana neutrinos. In vacuum, the first ones are suppressed with respect
to the others due to helicity conservation and the interactions with a
(``normal'') medium practically does not affect the expressions of the
probabilities for these transitions, even if the amplitudes of oscillations
slightly change. For usual situations involving relativistic neutrinos we find
no resonant enhancement for all flavour-conserving transitions. However, for
very light neutrinos propagating in superdense media, the pattern of
oscillations is dramatically altered with respect to the
vacuum case, the transition probability practically vanishing. An application

Discovery of a 6.4 h black hole binary in NGC 4490
We report on the discovery with Chandra of a strong modulation (~90% pulsed
fraction) at ~6.4 h from the source CXOU J123030.3+413853 in the star-forming,
low-metallicity spiral galaxy NGC 4490, which is interacting with the irregular
companion NGC 4485. This modulation, confirmed also by XMM-Newton observations,
is interpreted as the orbital period of a binary system. The spectra from the
Chandra and XMM-Newton observations can be described by a power-law model with
photon index ~1.5. During these observations, which span from 2000 November to
2008 May, the source showed a long-term luminosity variability by a factor of
~5, between ~2E+38 and 1.1E+39 erg/s (for a distance of 8 Mpc). The maximum
X-ray luminosity, exceeding by far the Eddington limit of a neutron star,
indicates that the accretor is a black hole. Given the high X-ray luminosity,
the short orbital period and the morphology of the orbital light curve, we
favour an interpretation of CXOU J123030.3+413853 as a rare high-mass X-ray
binary system with a Wolf-Rayet star as a donor, similar to Cyg X-3. This would
be the fourth system of this kind known in the local Universe. CXOU
J123030.3+413853 can also be considered as a transitional object between high
mass X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), the study of which
may reveal how the properties of persistent black-hole binaries evolve entering

Reactor Antineutrinos Signal all over the world
We present an updated estimate of reactor antineutrino signal all over the
world, with particular attention to the sites proposed for existing and future
geo-neutrino experiment. In our calculation we take into account the most
updated data on Thermal Power for each nuclear plant, on reactor antineutrino

Beta decays with momentum space Majorana spinors
We construct and apply to beta decays a truly neutral local quantum field
that is entirely based upon momentum space Majorana spinors. We make the
observation that theory with momentum space Majorana spinors of real C parities
is equivalent to Dirac's theory. For imaginary C parities, the neutrino mass
can drop from the single beta decay trace and reappear in 0\nu \beta \beta, a
curious and in principle experimentally testable signature for a non-trivial

A generalization of the Ginzburg-Landau theory to p-wave superconductors
We succeed to build up a straightforward theoretical model for spin-triplet
p-wave superconductors by introducing in Ginzburg-Landau theory a second order

An introduction to quantum gravity
After an overview of the physical motivations for studying quantum gravity,
we reprint THE FORMAL STRUCTURE OF QUANTUM GRAVITY, i.e. the 1978 Cargese
Lectures by Professor B.S. DeWitt, with kind permission of Springer. The reader
is therefore introduced, in a pedagogical way, to the functional integral
quantization of gravitation and Yang-Mills theory. It is hoped that such a
paper will remain useful for all lecturers or Ph.D. students who face the task
of introducing (resp. learning) some basic concepts in quantum gravity in a
relatively short time. In the second part, we outline selected topics such as
the braneworld picture with the same covariant formalism of the first part, and
spectral asymptotics of Euclidean quantum gravity with diffeomorphism-invariant
boundary conditions. The latter might have implications for singularity

One-Loop Divergences in Simple Supergravity: Boundary Effects
This paper studies the semiclassical approximation of simple supergravity in
Riemannian four-manifolds with boundary, within the framework of
-function regularization. The massless nature of gravitinos, jointly
with the presence of a boundary and a local description in terms of potentials
for spin , force the background to be totally flat. First, nonlocal
boundary conditions of the spectral type are imposed on spin-
potentials, jointly with boundary conditions on metric perturbations which are
completely invariant under infinitesimal diffeomorphisms. The axial
gauge-averaging functional is used, which is then sufficient to ensure
self-adjointness. One thus finds that the contributions of ghost and gauge
modes vanish separately. Hence the contributions to the one-loop wave function
of the universe reduce to those values resulting from physical modes
only. Another set of mixed boundary conditions, motivated instead by local
supersymmetry and first proposed by Luckock, Moss and Poletti, is also
analyzed. In this case the contributions of gauge and ghost modes do not cancel
each other. Both sets of boundary conditions lead to a nonvanishing
value, and spectral boundary conditions are also studied when two concentric
three-sphere boundaries occur. These results seem to point out that simple

Spinor two-point functions and Peierls bracket in de Sitter space
This paper studies spinor two-point functions for spin-1/2 and spin-3/2
fields in maximally symmetric spaces such as de Sitter spacetime, by using
intrinsic geometric objects. The Feynman, positive- and negative-frequency
Green functions are then obtained for these cases, from which we eventually
display the supercommutator and the Peierls bracket under such a setting in

A criterion for when an emulsion drop undergoing turbulent deformation has reached a critically deformed state
Turbulent breakup in emulsification devices is a dynamic process. Small viscous drops undergo a sequence of oscillations before entering the monotonic deformation phase leading to breakup. The turbulence-interface interactions prior to reaching critical deformation are therefore essential for understanding and modeling breakup. This contribution uses numerical experiments to characterize the critically deformed state (defined as a state from which breakup will follow deterministically, even if no further external stresses would act on the drop). Critical deformation does not coincide with a threshold maximum surface area, as previously suggested. A drop is critically deformed when a neck has formed locally with a curvature such that the Laplace pressure exceeds that of the smallest of the bulbs connected by the neck. This corresponds to a destabilizing internal flow, further thinning the neck. Assuming that the deformation leads to two spherical bulbs linked by a cylindrical neck, the critical deformation is achieved when the neck diameter becomes smaller than the radius of the smallest bulb.
