    Informal rental housing in Colombia: an essential option for low-income households

    Around the world, rental housing is frequently seen as secondary to home ownership; yet it plays a crucial role in many countries. In particular, rental housing in urban informal neighbourhoods has a critical but consistently overlooked role in housing the most vulnerable households in the Global South. If better policy and practice are to be pursued, there is a need for improved data on rental housing in urban informal settlements, and in particular, better understanding of ‘the lived experiences of the poor’. This paper responds to these empirical gaps in debates on informality and rental housing with qualitative research on residents’ experiences of informal rented housing in two Colombian cities, Bogotá and Cali. The paper frames informal rental housing as an essential option for diverse low-income households for whom ownership is not accessible or attractive. In this way, it also contributes to policy and theoretical debates calling for a better understanding of the dynamics, possibilities and potential of informal housing

    Energy Dissipating Devices in Falling Rock Protection Barriers

    Rockfall is a phenomenon which, when uncontrolled, may cause extensive material damage and personal injury. One of the structures used to avoid accidents caused by debris flows or rockfalls is flexible barriers. The energy dissipating devices which absorb the energy generated by rock impact and reduce the mechanical stresses in the rest of the elements of the structure are an essential part of these kinds of structures. This document proposes an overview of the performance of energy dissipating devices, as well as of the role that they fulfil in the barrier. Furthermore, a compilation and a description of the dissipating elements found in the literature are proposed. Additionally, an analysis has been performed of the aspects taken into account in the design, such as experimental (quasi-static and dynamic) tests observing the variation of the behaviour curve depending on the test speed and numerical simulations by means of several finite element software packages

    Tales of testosterone: Advancing our understanding of environmental endocrinology through studies of neotropical birds

    Studies of birds have greatly advanced our understanding of how testosterone modulates complex phenotypes, specifically its role in mediating male reproductive and associated behaviors. Yet most of the foundational studies have been limited to northern latitude breeding species despite the fact that they represent only a small fraction of worldwide avian diversity. In contrast, phylogenetic, life-history, and mating system diversity all reach their apex in neotropical avifauna and yet these birds, along with more southern latitude species, remain very poorly understood from an endocrine perspective. Despite the relatively limited previous work on taxa breeding in Central and South America, empirical findings have had a disproportionately large impact on our understanding of testosterone\u27s role in everything from geographic variation to behavioral roles and neuroplasticity. Here, we synthesize how studies of neotropical breeding avifauna have advanced our understanding of how testosterone\u27s actions can and are associated with the broad patterns of phenotypic diversity that we see in birds. In addition, we outline how these studies can be used individually or in a comparative context to address fundamental questions about the environmental endocrinology of testosterone and to understand the diversity of roles that testosterone plays in mediating behavioral variation, reproductive strategies, and associated life-history trade-offs
