This study focused on how two algebraic concepts- equality and variable- predicted 8th grade students’ equation solving performance. In this study, predictive design as a correlational research design was used. Randomly selected 407 eight-grade students who were from the central districts of a city in the central region of Turkey participated in the study. Multiple regression analysis was used to answer research questions. The results of the study showed that equality and variable concepts statistically significantly predicted students’ equation solving performance. The standardized regression weights (β) for the variable and equality concepts predicting students’ equation solving performance were 0.46 and 0.17, respectively. Keywords: equation solving, variable, equalit

Atypical depression is defined as a specifier of major depressive disorder. Columbia criteria for atypical depression are commonly used to make a diagnosis. Female sex, onset at early age, chronic course, and higher rate of comorbidity (especially anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder) is noteworthy in atypical depression. Although, the atypical depression seems to support the familial genetic transition, there is not any specific study supporting these data. In the treatment of atypical depression, monoamine oxidase inhibitors are reported to be more effective than tricyclic antidepressants. In recent studies, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have also proven to be efficient

Background: Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) has several negative effects on mental health, given its rapid transmission, hygiene and isolation measures and associated social and financial difficulties. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mental health burden of the Turkish population and vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 outbreak, especially exploring the effects of social support. Subjects and methods: We assessed depression, anxiety, stress symptoms and perceived social support among 894 people all over Turkey, using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) two months after the declaration of the first COVID-19 case in Turkey. Results: According to DASS-21 subscale scores, the findings showed that the prevalence of moderate to severe depression, anxiety and stress-related symptoms was 24.8%, 21.9% and 12.6%, respectively. Female gender, being single, having a lifetime psychiatric disorder, lower education level and financial concerns were significantly associated with higher DASS-21 scores. Also, there was a negative correlation between all subgroups of perceived social support, especially from the family, and the total DASS-21 score. Conclusions: Vulnerable groups should be identified and protected to reduce adverse psychiatric outcomes of COVID-19. Besides, further strategies should be provided to maintain protective factors, such as social support, under stressful conditions

There is dearth of literature on the relationship between epistemological beliefs and mathematics anxiety levels at the national level. It is important from to analyze the relationship between the two variables which are effective on student teachers’ performance of mathematics as other disciplines. The aim of the study is to explore the relationship between mathematics student teachers’ epistemological beliefs and anxiety levels considering all the sub-dimensions of the variables. The study uses the quantitative paradigm and the correlational model. The sample of the study comprised of the 547 student teachers trained in Selcuk and Marmara Universities. The data collection tools are ‘epistemological beliefs scale’, ‘mathematics anxiety scale’ and personal information form. Statistical analyses were made using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product correlation and chi-square formulas. Most of the correlations between all dimensions of the two variables showed statistically meaningful relationships. The statistically meaningful and slightly below average correlations are among the noteworthy findings of the study whose reasons and implications are discussed in the paper.Ülkemizde bilgibilimsel inançlar ve kaygı arasındaki ilişkiyi araştıran hiçbir çalışmaya rastlanmamıştır.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of medical students about the COVID-19 and the effect of the outbreak on the students' anxiety levels. Methods: The cross-sectional study was carried out between 07-14 April, with the online questionnaire forms applied to the medical students. A questionnaire forms were sent to one of every two students in the faculty using the systematic sampling method. A total of 530 volunteers were included in the study. The data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire of the socio-demographic characteristics, opinions about the epidemic, knowledge, and attitude of medical students regarding COVID-19. Anxiety levels of the participants were measured with the State-Trait anxiety inventory. Results: A total of 530 medical students had a mean score of knowledge and attitude of 7.83±1.27 and 45.18±5.12, respectively. Participants demonstrated good knowledge and a positive attitude towards COVID-19. Clinical period students had a higher level of knowledge (p lt;0.001) and positive attitude (p=0.025) compared to preclinical students. While the knowledge score was higher in men (p = 0.033), the attitude score was higher in women (p lt;0.001). There was a negative correlation between attitude scores and state (p=0.003) and trait anxiety scores (p lt;0.001).Conclusion: Medical students had sufficient knowledge and attitude towards COVID-19. Anxiety caused by the outbreak may have negative effects on the positive attitudes of the participants

4th World Conference on Educational Sciences (WCES) -- FEB 02-05, 2012 -- Univ Barcelona, Barcelona, SPAINWOS: 000314465900089The aim of this study was to investigate pre-service elementary mathematics teachers' problem types which were posed for modeling fraction division. Data was collected from pre-service elementary mathematics teachers in the spring semester of 2010-2011 who were enrolled in a teacher education program at a public university. Data collection tool entailed pre-service elementary teachers posing world division problems corresponding to the fractions written in symbolic form. The results of the study revealed that pre-service elementary mathematics teachers posed problems involving fraction multiplication rather than fraction division and they used invert and multiply algorithm. There was evidence that they did not have adequate learning about fraction division.Acad World Educ & Res Ctr, Near E Univ, Bahcesehir Univ, Ankara Univ, Hacettepe Univ, Cyprus Educ Sci Asso

WOS: 000359183300004Today high performance fibres with uniquely inherent properties are used for many technical areas such as resistance to heat and flame, chemicals, stabs and cuts; protective clothing and gloves for firefighters, military and industry. In this study, some technical core-spun yams, which can be used in the development of protective textiles were produced with various high performance fibres in three core-sheath ratios (19/81%, 37/63%, 56/44%) by using a modified ring spinning frame. Short staple para-aramid, meta-aramid and PES Trevira(R) (flame retardant) fibres were used as sheath and multi filament yarns of 110 dtex linear density (E-glass, PES Trevira(R), PA HT, PP, PES HT, Technora(R) T240 and Dyneema(R) SK75) as the core. The data obtained from tensile testing and the effects of sheath, core and core-sheath ratio on tensile properties were analysed statistically. The results revealed that the tensile properties of core-spun yarns show different tendencies with respect to the type of fibres in core, sheath and different core/sheath ratios. Higher tensile strength is noticed in core-spun yarns with para-aramid sheath fibres followed by PES Trevira(R) and meta-aramid, and vice-versa in case of elongation. Dyneema(R) and Technora(R) core-spun yams exhibit the highest and PES-Trevira(R) the lowest tensile strength values. Highest elongation values were observed for core-spun yams with PP filaments.TUBITAKTurkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [114M046]The authors wish to thank TUBITAK for the financial support of project (No. 114M046)
