    Occurrence of helminth parasites in the Turkish endemic fish, squalius anatolicus (cyprinidae)

    In this study, the occurrence of helminth parasites in Squalius anatolicus (Cyprinidae) of Sarisu stream (Beysehir - Konya) was investigated from spring 2009 to autumn 2010. S. anatolicus is endemic to Turkey, having very limited distributions. The conservation status of the fish has been referred to as endangered. During the study, a total of 83 Squalius anatolicus specimens were examined for helminth parasites. Two species of helminth parasites [Dactylogyrus vistulae (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae), Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala: Pomphorhynchidae)] were found on 51 fish. Male hosts had higher levels of infection of both isolated parasite species. A total of 52 specimens of D. vistulae infected 10 of 83 fish examined, with prevalence and mean intensity of 12.04 % and 5.2 respectively. A total 203 specimens of P. laevis infected 48 of 83 fish examined, with prevalence and mean intensity of infection 57.8 % and 4.2 respectively. Prevalence and infection intensity, length classes, and sex compositions of host populations, as well as the seasonality of infection were obtained and the results compared with other studies. This study is the first parasitological survey of S. anatolicus in Turkey, adding to the knowledge of geographical distribution and host range of two parasite species

    Specimens of Anilocra frontalis Milne-Edwards, 1840 and Anilocra physodes (Linnaeus, 1758) (Cymothoidae - Isopoda) were observed on 7 fish species (Oblado melanura (Linnaeus, 1758), Hoops boops (Linnaeus, 1758), Pagellus erythrinus (Linnaeus, 1758), Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758), Diplodus annularis (Linnaeus, 1758), Sphyraena chrysotaenia Klunzinger, 1884, Liza aurata (Risso, 1810)) belonging to Sparidae, Sphyraenidae and Mugulidae families on the coast of Antalya, Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Prevalence (percent of hosts infected) and intensity (mean number of parasites per infected host) were calculated for all species. This is the first record of the Anilocra frontalis and Anilocra physodes for the Mediterranean coast of Turkey

    Oxynoemacheilus is a species-rich genus of nemacheilid fishes known from Albania eastwards to Central Iran. There are 58 available species-group names and 41 species are recognized here as valid. Four species occur in Europe (O. bureschi, O. merga, O. pindus, O. theophilii) and 38 species are found in Anatolia and the Middle East. Barbatula paucilepis, Cobitis tigris, Nemacheilus tigris cyri, N. namiri, Noemacheilus tigris seyhanensis and Orthrias angorae ercisianus recently placed in Paracobitis as well as Nun galilaeus and Seminemacheilus tongiorgii are all transferred to Oxynoemacheilus.Peer reviewe

    Persistent organochlorine pesticide residues in water and sediment samples from Lake Manyas, Turkey

    PubMed ID: 24620575The extent of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) contamination in Manyas Lake (Bird Lake) and its tributary rivers and streams which is situated near the South-eastern coasts of the Marmara Sea in Turkey was investigated. Residues of OCPs in surface water and sediment samples were analysed by gas chromatography equipped with electron capture detector. The total OCPs concentration (?OCPs) in water and sediment samples ranged from 1.43 to 8.6 µg l -1 and from 17.05 to 39.14 ng g-1, respectively. According to the concentrations and detection frequencies, HCHs, DDTs, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide were the most dominant compounds among the OCPs. The results showed that Manyas Lake was still contaminated by organochlorine pesticides and their residues despite bans on the production and usage over a long time. © Triveni Enterprises, Lucknow (India)
