    An impact assessment for urban stormwater use

    The adoption of stormwater collection and use for a range of non-potable applications requires that the perceived risks, particularly those associated with public health, are addressed. Pollutant impacts have been assessed using E. coli and a scoring system on a scale of 0 to 5 to identify the magnitude of impacts and also the likelihood of exposure to stormwater during different applications. Combining these identifies that low or medium risks are generally predicted except for domestic car washing and occupational irrigation of edible raw food crops where the predicted high risk would necessitate the introduction of remedial action

    Vegetation fire smoke, indigenous status and cardio-respiratory hospital admissions in Darwin, Australia, 1996–2005: a time-series study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Air pollution in Darwin, Northern Australia, is dominated by smoke from seasonal fires in the surrounding savanna that burn during the dry season from April to November. Our aim was to study the association between particulate matter less than or equal to 10 microns diameter (PM<sub>10</sub>) and daily emergency hospital admissions for cardio-respiratory diseases for each fire season from 1996 to 2005. We also investigated whether the relationship differed in indigenous Australians; a disadvantaged population sub-group.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Daily PM<sub>10 </sub>exposure levels were estimated for the population of the city from visibility data using a previously validated model. We used over-dispersed Poisson generalized linear models with parametric smoothing functions for time and meteorology to examine the association between admissions and PM<sub>10 </sub>up to three days prior. An interaction between indigenous status and PM<sub>10 </sub>was included to examine differences in the impact on indigenous people.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found both positive and negative associations and our estimates had wide confidence intervals. There were generally positive associations between respiratory disease and PM<sub>10 </sub>but not with cardiovascular disease. An increase of 10 μg/m<sup>3 </sup>in same-day estimated ambient PM<sub>10 </sub>was associated with a 4.81% (95%CI: -1.04%, 11.01%) increase in total respiratory admissions. When the interaction between indigenous status and PM<sub>10 </sub>was assessed a statistically different association was found between PM<sub>10 </sub>and admissions three days later for respiratory infections of indigenous people (15.02%; 95%CI: 3.73%, 27.54%) than for non-indigenous people (0.67%; 95%CI: -7.55%, 9.61%). There were generally negative estimates for cardiovascular conditions. For non-indigenous admissions the estimated association with total cardiovascular admissions for same day ambient PM<sub>10 </sub>and admissions was -3.43% (95%CI: -9.00%, 2.49%) and the estimate for indigenous admissions was -3.78% (95%CI: -13.4%, 6.91%), although ambient PM<sub>10 </sub>did have positive (non-significant) associations with cardiovascular admissions of indigenous people two and three days later.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We observed positive associations between vegetation fire smoke and daily hospital admissions for respiratory diseases that were stronger in indigenous people. While this study was limited by the use of estimated rather than measured exposure data, the results are consistent with the currently small evidence base concerning this source of air pollution.</p

    Wastewater irrigation: the state of play

    As demand for fresh water intensifies, wastewater is frequently being seen as a valuable resource. Furthermore, wise reuse of wastewater alleviates concerns attendant with its discharge to the environment. Globally, around 20 million ha of land are irrigated with wastewater, and this is likely to increase markedly during the next few decades as water stress intensifies. In 1995, around 2.3 billion people lived in water-stressed river basins and this could increase to 3.5 billion by 2025. We review the current status of wastewater irrigation by providing an overview of the extent of the practice throughout the world and through synthesizing the current understanding of factors influencing sustainable wastewater irrigation. A theme that emerges is that wastewater irrigation is not only more common in water-stressed regions such as the Near East, but the rationale for the practice also tends to differ between the developing and developed worlds. In developing nations, the prime drivers are livelihood dependence and food security, whereas environmental agendas appear to hold greater sway in the developed world. The following were identified as areas requiring greater understanding for the long-term sustainability of wastewater irrigation: (i) accumulation of bioavailable forms of heavy metals in soils, (ii) environmental fate of organics in wastewater-irrigated soils, (iii) influence of reuse schemes on catchment hydrology, including transport of salt loads, (iv) risk models for helminth infections (pertinent to developing nations), (v) microbiological contamination risks for aquifers and surface waters, (vi) transfer efficiencies of chemical contaminants from soil to plants, (vii) health effects of chronic exposure to chemical contaminants, and (viii) strategies for engaging the public.<br /

Increased and wider stakeholder interests and associated consultation times are also stretching out medium- to large-scale development approval times. Sustainable development design for high-density masterplanning, based on enhanced lifestyle and environmental parameters and which incorporate sustainable drainage systems are proposed, which bring together the apparently contradictory objectives of PPG3 development and PPG25 flood risk regulations

    Protecting water quality in urban estuaries: Australian case studies

    Estuaries provide important environmental, social, cultural, and economic services. The provision of these services is often negatively impacted by urban development within the catchment and along shorelines, most notably through habitat loss and alteration of hydrological and sedimentation regimes influencing system structure and function. Mitigating the effects of urban development on estuaries provides a great challenge for managers, particularly when considering the diversity of estuaries and catchment characteristics. The management of urban stormwater is a challenging issue where no single solution is apparent but requires varied approaches. Using three distinctly different Australian estuaries, this chapter presents an account of combined management plans, restoration, monitoring/research, and education efforts used in addressing and managing the issues of urban pressures on water quality surrounding Port Jackson, Gold Coast Broadwater, and the Ross River estuary. Although the case study estuaries significantly vary according to rainfall seasonality and intensity, population density, and catchment size, a survey of implemented protection and management initiatives, illustrates a consistent theme of management practices across the case studies: (1) catchment/estuary management policies and plans including stormwater quality improvement device initiative practices; (2) low impact and purpose-designed development options including water-sensitive urban design options, including specific design adaptations required for effective operation in varying climatic zones and catchment conditions; (3) restoration programs; (4) water quality monitoring programs; (5) research activities; and (6) stakeholder and community education campaigns. The best management outcomes for urbanized estuaries require implementation of catchment-based management plans that are supported by clear objectives regarding ecosystem services and regional challenges
