Role of baryonic resonances in the dilepton emission in nucleon-nucleon collisions
Within an effective Lagrangian model, we present calculations for cross
sections of the dilepton production in proton-proton and proton-neutron
collisions at laboratory kinetic energies in 1-5 GeV range. Production
amplitudes include contributions from the nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung as
well as from the mechanism of excitation, propagation, and radiative decay of
Delta(1232) and N*(1520) intermediate baryonic resonances. It is found that the
delta isobar terms dominate the cross sections in the entire considered beam
energy range. Our calculations are able to explain the data of the DLS
collaboration on the dilepton production in proton-proton collisions for beam
energies below 1.3 GeV. However, for incident energies higher than this the
inclusion of contributions from other dilepton sources like Dalitz decay of pi0
and eta mesons, and direct decay of rho and omega mesons is necessary to
describe the data.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, more details of the calculations added, version

Determination of alphaS from Hadronic Event Shapes in e+e- Annihilation at 192 < sqrt(s) < 208 GeV
Results are presented from a study of the structure of high energy hadronic
events recorded by the L3 detector at sqrt(s)>192 GeV. The distributions of
several event shape variables are compared to resummed O(alphaS^2) QCD
calculations. We determine the strong coupling constant at three average
centre-of-mass energies: 194.4, 200.2 and 206.2 GeV. These measurements,
combined with previous L3 measurements at lower energies, demonstrate the
running of alphaS as expected in QCD and yield alphaS(mZ) = 0.1227 +- 0.0012 +-
0.0058, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is
theoretical
Neutral-Current Four-Fermion Production in e+e- Interactions at LEP
Neutral-current four-fermion production, e+e- -> ffff is studied in 0.7/fb of
data collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
root(s)=183-209GeV. Four final states are considered: qqvv, qqll, llll and
llvv, where l denotes either an electron or a muon. Their cross sections are
measured and found to agree with the Standard Model predictions. In addition,
the e+e- -> Zgamma* -> ffff process is studied and its total cross section at
the average centre-of-mass energy 196.6GeV is found to be 0.29 +/- 0.05 +/-
0.03 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic,
in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.22 pb. Finally, the mass
spectra of the qqll final states are analysed to search for the possible
production of a new neutral heavy particle, for which no evidence is found
Z Boson Pair-Production at LEP
Events stemming from the pair-production of Z bosons in e^+e^- collisions are
studied using 217.4 pb^-1 of data collected with the L3 detector at
centre-of-mass energies from 200 GeV up to 209 GeV. The special case of events
with b quarks is also investigated.
Combining these events with those collected at lower centre-of-mass energies,
the Standard Model predictions for the production mechanism are verified. In
addition, limits are set on anomalous couplings of neutral gauge bosons and on
effects of extra space dimensions
Inclusive Charged Hadron Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP
Inclusive charged hadron production, e+e- -> e+e- h+- X, is studied using 414
pb-1 of data collected at LEP with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies
between 189 and 202 GeV. Single particle inclusive differential cross sections
are measured as a function of the particle transverse momentum, pt, and
pseudo-rapidity, eta. For p_t < 1.5 GeV, the data are well described by an
exponential, typical of soft hadronic processes. For higher pt, the onset of
perturbative QCD processes is observed. The pi+- production cross section for
pt > 5 GeV is much higher than the NLO QCD predictions
Study of the e+e- -> Ze+e- process at LEP
The cross section of the process e+e- -> Ze+e is measured with 0.7fb^-1 of
data collected with the L3 detector at LEP. Decays of the Z boson into quarks
and muons are considered at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 183GeV up to
209GeV. The measurements are found to agree with Standard Model predictions,
achieving a precision of about 10% for the hadronic channel
Inclusive Lambda Production in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP
The reactions e^+e^- -> e^+e^- Lambda X and e^+e^- -> e^+e^- Lambda X are
studied using data collected at LEP with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass
energies between 189 and 209 GeV. Inclusive differential cross sections are
measured as a function of the lambda transverse momentum, p_t, and
pseudo-rapidity, eta, in the ranges 0.4 GeV < p_t < 2.5 GeV and |\eta| < 1.2.
The data are compared to Monte Carlo predictions. The differential cross
section as a function of p_t is well described by an exponential of the form A
exp (- p_t / )$
Search for Charged Higgs Bosons at LEP
A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons is performed with the L3
detector at LEP using data collected at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and
209GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 629.4/pb. Decays into a
charm and a strange quark or into a tau lepton and its neutrino are considered.
No significant excess is observed and lower limits on the mass of the charged
Higgs boson are derived at the 95% confidence level. They vary from 76.5 to
82.7GeV, as a function of the H->tv branching ratio
Search for a Higgs Boson Decaying to Weak Boson Pairs at LEP
A Higgs particle produced in association with a Z boson and decaying into
weak boson pairs is searched for in 336.4 1/pb of data collected by the L3
experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 200 to 209 GeV. Limits on the
branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay into two weak bosons as a function
of the Higgs mass are derived. These results are combined with the L3 search
for a Higgs boson decaying to photon pairs. A Higgs produced with a Standard
Model e+e- --> Zh cross section and decaying only into electroweak boson pairs
is excluded at 95% CL for a mass below 107 GeV
Study of Inclusive Strange-Baryon Production and Search for Pentaquarks in Two-Photon Collisions at LEP
Measurements of inclusive production of the Lambda, Xi- and Xi*(1530) baryons
in two-photon collisions with the L3 detector at LEP are presented. The
inclusive differential cross sections for Lambda and Xi- are measured as a
function of the baryon transverse momentum, pt, and pseudo-rapidity, eta. The
mean number of Lambda, Xi- and Xi*(1530) baryons per hadronic two-photon event
is determined in the kinematic range 0.4 GeV < pt< 2.5 GeV, |eta| < 1.2.
Overall agreement with the theoretical models and Monte Carlo predictions is
observed. A search for inclusive production of the pentaquark theta+(1540) in
two-photon collisions through the decay theta+ -> proton K0s is also presented.
No evidence for production of this state is found
