Teoria Funcionalista dos Valores Humanos: : Testando as hipóteses de conteúdo e estrutura no contexto pernambucano
The Functional Theory of Values (TFVH) understands values as general guiding principles, transcending specific objects or situations. The objective was to test the hypothesis of the content and structure of TFVH. There were 634 university students (Mage=22.6), the majority female (51.3%). The hypothesis was tested with confirmatory factor analysis (e.g., IFC=0.97, TLI=0.96, and RMSEA=0.04). The hypothesis of the structure was also tested with confirmatory multidimensional scaling (Proxscal), indicating that values can be represented in a 3 X 2 space where the 3 refers to the type of orientation - personal, central and social - and the 2, the type of motivator - materialistic and idealistic. We concluded that the TFVH gathered evidence of its suitability in the studied scope and can be used to understand human values and their correlates.A Teoria Funcionalista dos Valores Humanos (TFVH) compreende os valores como princípios-guia gerais, transcendendo objetos ou situações específicas. Objetivou-se testar as hipóteses de conteúdo e a estrutura da TFVH. Participaram 634 universitários (M idade =22,6), sendo a maioria mulheres (51,3%). Com a análise fatorial confirmatória (e.g., CFI=0,97, TLI=0,96 e RMSEA=0,04), testou-se a hipótese de conteúdo. Com o escalonamento multidimensional confirmatório (Proxscal), testou-se a hipótese de estrutura, indicando que os valores podem ser representados em um espaço 3 X 2 em que o 3 refere-se a tipo de orientação - pessoal, central e social - e o 2, a tipo de motivador - materialista e idealista. Concluiu-se que a TFVH reuniu evidências de sua adequação no contexto estudado, podendo ser utilizada para compreender os valores humanos e seus correlatos
Protective effect of carboxymethyl-glucan (CM-G) against DNA damage in patients with advanced prostate cancer
Carboxymethyl-glucan (CM-G) is a soluble derivative from Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1 → 3)(1 → 6)-β-D-glucan. The protective efficiency of CM-G against DNA damage in cells from patients with advanced prostate cancer (PCa), and undergoing Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT), was evaluated. DNA damage scores were obtained by the comet assay, both before and after treatment with CM-G. The reduction in DNA damage, ranging from 18% to 87%, with an average of 59%, was not related to the increased number of leukocytes in peripheral blood. The results demonstrate for the first time the protective effect of CM-G against DNA damage in patients with advanced PCa. Among smokers, three presented the highest reduction in DNA damage after treatment with CM-G. There was no observable relationship between DNA damage scores before and after treatment, and age, alcoholism and radiotherapy

NEOTROPICAL ALIEN MAMMALS: a data set of occurrence and abundance of alien mammals in the Neotropics
Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084); 17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids. This unique data set will be a valuable source of information on invasion risk assessments, biodiversity redistribution and conservation-related research. There are no copyright restrictions. BJS commission on surgery and perioperative care post-COVID-19
Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March 2020 and global surgical practice was compromised. This Commission aimed to document and reflect on the changes seen in the surgical environment during the pandemic, by reviewing colleagues experiences and published evidence. Methods: In late 2020, BJS contacted colleagues across the global surgical community and asked them to describe how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had affected their practice. In addition to this, the Commission undertook a literature review on the impact of COVID-19 on surgery and perioperative care. A thematic analysis was performed to identify the issues most frequently encountered by the correspondents, as well as the solutions and ideas suggested to address them. Results: BJS received communications for this Commission from leading clinicians and academics across a variety of surgical specialties in every inhabited continent. The responses from all over the world provided insights into multiple facets of surgical practice from a governmental level to individual clinical practice and training. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered a variety of problems in healthcare systems, including negative impacts on surgical practice. Global surgical multidisciplinary teams are working collaboratively to address research questions about the future of surgery in the post-COVID-19 era. The COVID-19 pandemic is severely damaging surgical training. The establishment of a multidisciplinary ethics committee should be encouraged at all surgical oncology centres. Innovative leadership and collaboration is vital in the post-COVID-19 era
