Measurement of identified charged hadron spectra in proton-proton collisions using the Inner Tracking System of the ALICE experiment at the LHC

The measurement of the identified charged hadron p_t spectra using the ITS energy loss signal in the p-p data at sqrt{s}=900 GeV collected by the ALICE experiment at LHC will be discussed. It is performed using the Inner Tracking System (ITS) in stand-alone mode, both for track reconstruction and particle identification, allowing one to detect low momentum particles with p_t below 200 MeV/c. A second method using the tracks reconstructed by both the ITS and the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) has also been developed. The obtained results will be compared with the ones obtained from the TPC and from the Time Of Flight detector and used to extract the mean p_t value.Comment: 3 pages, 8 figures, conference proceedings of the Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum I

A Note on Rectangle Covering with Congruent Disks

In this note we prove that, if SnS_n is the greatest area of a rectangle which can be covered with nn unit disks, then 2Sn/n<33/22\leq S_n/n<3 \sqrt{3}/2, and these are the best constants; moreover, for Δ(n):=(33/2)nSn\Delta(n):=(3\sqrt{3}/2)n-S_n, we have 0.727384<lim infΔ(n)/n<2.1213210.727384<\liminf\Delta(n)/\sqrt{n}<2.121321 and 0.727384<lim supΔ(n)/n<4.1650640.727384<\limsup\Delta(n)/\sqrt{n}<4.165064.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, some corrections made in version

Spatially homogeneous Maxwellian molecules in a neighborhood of the equilibrium

This note deals with the long-time behavior of the solution to the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Maxwellian molecules, when the initial datum belongs to a suitable neighborhood of the Maxwellian equilibrium. In particulary, it contains a quantification of the rate of exponential convergence, obtained by simple arguments

    Boosted top: experimental tools overview

An overview of tools and methods for the reconstruction of high-boost top quark decays at the LHC is given in this report. The focus is on hadronic decays, in particular an overview of the current status of top quark taggers in physics analyses is presented. The most widely used jet substructure techniques, normally used in combination with top quark taggers, are reviewed. Special techniques to treat pileup in large cone jets are described, along with a comparison of the performance of several boosted top quark reconstruction techniques.Comment: Proceedings from the 7th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics, Cannes, Franc

A generalized Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for the three-dimensional projective space

A generalized Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for tilt-stable complexes on a smooth projective threefold was conjectured by Bayer, Toda, and the author. We show that such inequality holds true in general, if it holds true when the polarization is sufficiently small. As an application, we prove it for the three-dimensional projective space.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
