Stochastic compartmental analysis with examples of estimation in pulse labelled syste
The colour-magnitude relations of ClJ1226.9+3332, a massive cluster of galaxies at z=0.89
(Abridged) The colour-magnitude relations of one of the most massive, high
redshift clusters of galaxies known have been studied. Photometry has been
measured in the V, R, I, z, F606W, F814W, J and K bands to a depth of K*+2.5
and spectroscopy confirms 27 K band selected cluster members. The V-K colours
are equivalent to a rest-frame colour of ~2700A-J, and provide a very sensitive
measure of star-formation activity. HST ACS imaging has been used to
morphologically classify the galaxies.
The cluster has a low early-type fraction compared to nearby clusters, with
only 33% of the cluster members having types E or S0. The early-type member
galaxies form a clear red-sequence in all colours. The scatter and slope of the
relations show no evolution compared to the equivalent Coma cluster relations,
suggesting the stellar populations are already very old. The normalisation of
the relations has been compared to models based on synthetic stellar
populations, and are most consistent with stellar populations forming at z>3.
Some late-type galaxies were found to lie on the red-sequence, suggesting that
they have very similar stellar populations to the early-types.
These results present a picture of a cluster in which the early-type galaxies
are all old, but in which there must be future morphological transformation of
galaxies to match the early-type fraction of nearby clusters. In order to
preserve the tight colour-magnitude relation of early-types seen in nearby
clusters, the late-type galaxies must transform their colours, through the
cessation of star-formation, before the morphological transformation occurs.
Such evolution is observed in the late-types lying on the colour-magnitude

Forecasting using relative entropy
The paper describes a relative entropy procedure for imposing moment restrictions on simulated forecast distributions from a variety of models. Starting from an empirical forecast distribution for some variables of interest, the technique generates a new empirical distribution that satisfies a set of moment restrictions. The new distribution is chosen to be as close as possible to the original in the sense of minimizing the associated Kullback-Leibler Information Criterion, or relative entropy. The authors illustrate the technique by using several examples that show how restrictions from other forecasts and from economic theory may be introduced into a model's forecasts.Forecasting
What if Supersymmetry Breaking Unifies beyond the GUT Scale?
We study models in which soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters of the MSSM
become universal at some unification scale, , above the GUT scale,
\mgut. We assume that the scalar masses and gaugino masses have common
values, and respectively, at . We use the
renormalization-group equations of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) GUT to
evaluate their evolutions down to \mgut, studying their dependences on the
unknown parameters of the SU(5) superpotential. After displaying some generic
examples of the evolutions of the soft supersymmetry-breaking parameters, we
discuss the effects on physical sparticle masses in some specific examples. We
note, for example, that near-degeneracy between the lightest neutralino and the
lighter stau is progressively disfavoured as increases. This has the
consequence, as we show in planes for several different values
of , that the stau coannihilation region shrinks as
increases, and we delineate the regions of the plane
where it is absent altogether. Moreover, as increases, the focus-point
region recedes to larger values of for any fixed and
. We conclude that the regions of the plane that are
commonly favoured in phenomenological analyses tend to disappear at large

Revisiting the Higgs Mass and Dark Matter in the CMSSM
Taking into account the available accelerator and astrophysical constraints,
the mass of the lightest neutral Higgs boson h in the minimal supersymmetric
extension of the Standard Model with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking
masses (CMSSM) has been estimated to lie between 114 and ~ 130 GeV. Recent data
from ATLAS and CMS hint that m_h ~ 125 GeV, though m_h ~ 119 GeV may still be a
possibility. Here we study the consequences for the parameters of the CMSSM and
direct dark matter detection if the Higgs hint is confirmed, focusing on the
strips in the (m_1/2, m_0) planes for different tan beta and A_0 where the
relic density of the lightest neutralino chi falls within the range of the
cosmological cold dark matter density allowed by WMAP and other experiments. We
find that if m_h ~ 125 GeV focus-point strips would be disfavoured, as would
the low-tan beta stau-chi and stop -chi coannihilation strips, whereas the
stau-chi coannihilation strip at large tan beta and A_0 > 0 would be favoured,
together with its extension to a funnel where rapid annihilation via
direct-channel H/A poles dominates. On the other hand, if m_h ~ 119 GeV more
options would be open. We give parametrizations of WMAP strips with large tan
beta and fixed A_0/m_0 > 0 that include portions compatible with m_h = 125 GeV,
and present predictions for spin-independent elastic dark matter scattering
along these strips. These are generally low for models compatible with m_h =
125 GeV, whereas the XENON100 experiment already excludes some portions of
strips where m_h is smaller.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figure
Local freedom in the gravitational field
In a cosmological context, the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl
tensor, E_{ab} and H_{ab}, represent the locally free curvature - i.e. they are
not pointwise determined by the matter fields. By performing a complete
covariant decomposition of the derivatives of E_{ab} and H_{ab}, we show that
the parts of the derivative of the curvature which are locally free (i.e. not
pointwise determined by the matter via the Bianchi identities) are exactly the
symmetrised trace-free spatial derivatives of E_{ab} and H_{ab} together with
their spatial curls. These parts of the derivatives are shown to be crucial for

Terahertz dynamics of a topologically protected state: quantum Hall effect plateaus near cyclotron resonance in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at
a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron
resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method
coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We
observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs.
electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are
the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of
topologically protected edge states. The results are compared to a recent

The Venus Balloon Project
On June 11 and 15, 1985, two instrumental balloons were released from the Soviet VEGA 1 and VEGA 2 spacecraft and deployed in the atmosphere of Venus. The VEGA probes flew by the planet on their way to a rendezvous with comet Halley in March 1986. Drifting with the wind at altitudes of 54 km, the balloons traveled one-third of the way around the planet during their 46-hour lifetimes. Sensors on-board the gondolas made periodic measurements of pressure, temperature, vertical wind velocity, cloud particle density, ambient light level, and frequency of lightning. The data were transmitted to Earth and received at the Deep Space Network (DSN) 64-m stations and at several large antennas in the USSR. Approximately 95 percent of the telemetry data were successfully decoded at the DSN complexes and in the Soviet Union, and were provided to the international science team for analysis. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data were acquired by 20 radio observatories around the world for the purpose of monitoring the Venus winds. The DSN 64-m subnet was part of a 15-station VLBI network organized by the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) of France. In addition, five antennas of the Soviet network participated. VLBI data from the CNES network are currently being processed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Relating the CMSSM and SUGRA models with GUT scale and Super-GUT scale Supersymmetry Breaking
While the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) with
universal gaugino masses, m_{1/2}, scalar masses, m_0, and A-terms, A_0,
defined at some high energy scale (usually taken to be the GUT scale) is
motivated by general features of supergravity models, it does not carry all of
the constraints imposed by minimal supergravity (mSUGRA). In particular, the
CMSSM does not impose a relation between the trilinear and bilinear soft
supersymmetry breaking terms, B_0 = A_0 - m_0, nor does it impose the relation
between the soft scalar masses and the gravitino mass, m_0 = m_{3/2}. As a
consequence, tan(\beta) is computed given values of the other CMSSM input
parameters. By considering a Giudice-Masiero (GM) extension to mSUGRA, one can
introduce new parameters to the K\"ahler potential which are associated with
the Higgs sector and recover many of the standard CMSSM predictions. However,
depending on the value of A_0, one may have a gravitino or a neutralino dark
matter candidate. We also consider the consequences of imposing the
universality conditions above the GUT scale. This GM extension provides a
