    A new set of supersymmetric benchmark scenarios has recently been proposed in the context of the constrained MSSM (CMSSM) with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking masses, taking into account the constraints from LEP, b→sγb \to s \gamma and gμ−2g_\mu - 2. These points have previously been used to discuss the physics reaches of different accelerators. In this paper, we discuss the prospects for discovering supersymmetric dark matter in these scenarios. We consider direct detection through spin-independent and spin-dependent nuclear scattering, as well as indirect detection through relic annihilations to neutrinos, photons, and positrons. We find that several of the benchmark scenarios offer good prospects for direct detection via spin-independent nuclear scattering and indirect detection via muons produced by neutrinos from relic annihilations inside the Sun, and some models offer good prospects for detecting photons from relic annihilations in the galactic centre.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figure

    The faint-galaxy hosts of gamma-ray bursts

    The observed redshifts and magnitudes of the host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are compared with the predictions of three basic GRB models, in which the comoving rate density of GRBs is (1) proportional to the cosmic star formation rate density, (2) proportional to the total integrated stellar density and (3) constant. All three models make the assumption that at every epoch the probability of a GRB occuring in a galaxy is proportional to that galaxy's broad-band luminosity. No assumption is made that GRBs are standard candles or even that their luminosity function is narrow. All three rate density models are consistent with the observed GRB host galaxies to date, although model (2) is slightly disfavored relative to the others. Models (1) and (3) make very similar predictions for host galaxy magnitude and redshift distributions; these models will be probably not be distinguished without measurements of host-galaxy star-formation rates. The fraction of host galaxies fainter than 28 mag may constrain the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function at high redshift, or, if the fraction is observed to be low, may suggest that the bursters are expelled from low-luminosity hosts. In all models, the probability of finding a z<0.008 GRB among a sample of 11 GRBs is less than 10^(-4), strongly suggesting that GRB 980425, if associated with supernova 1998bw, represents a distinct class of GRBs.Comment: 7 pages, ApJ in press, revised to incorporate yet more new and revised observational result

    Calcium ion-selective electrodes with covalently-bound sensor groups.

    A review of the development of ion selective electrodes (ISE), with particular emphasis on calcium ISE, is presented. The utility, in terms of an increased electrode operational lifetime and opportunities for the enhancement of selectivity and sensitivity of a calcium ISE membrane with a covalently-bound ion-exchange sensor group is indicated. The production of such a covalently-bound sensor (CBS) membrane by the crosslinking of styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene triblock elastomer with triallyl phosphate (TAP) using a free radical initialed copolymerisation is described. Various methods of forming such ion-exchange membranes were investigated. The resulting.membranes were hydrolysed in methanolic KOH to yield covalently-bound dialkylphosphate exchange sites. These membranes were then used to fabricate a robust calcium ISE. The response range, selectivity and general analytical utility of such electrodes are evaluated and the electrodes used in the determination of water hardness and of calcium in coking plant effluent. The modification of the ion-exchange site by using either trioleyl phosphate, tri(10-undecenyl) phosphate or diallyl phenylphosphonate as cross-linking agent is described and the subsequent effects on electrode performance are discussed. A method enabling the elimination of the hydrolysis step during membrane production resulting in a second pathway to the production of a covalently-bound dialkylphosphate sensor is also described. The use of covalently-bound mediator materials in the electrode membrane is investigated and their effect .on membrane performance discussed. The incorporation of an entangled solvent-mediator in conjunction with a dialkylphosphate sensor, which yielded a calcium ISE. with good selectivity fpr Ca[2+] in the presence of Mg[2+] and Na[+] ions, is described. Results from various mechanistic studies including radiotracer and electron microprobe techniques are presented. Possible mechanisms for the response and selectivity of CBS electrodes are discussed on the basis of these studies

    The Color-Magnitude Relation in Coma: Clues to the Age and Metallicity of Cluster Populations

    We have observed three fields of the Coma cluster of galaxies with a narrow band (modified Stromgren) filter system. Observed galaxies include 31 in the vicinity of NGC 4889, 48 near NGC 4874, and 60 near NGC 4839 complete to M_5500=-18 in all three subclusters. Spectrophotometric classification finds all three subclusters of Coma to be dominated by red, E type (ellipticals/S0's) galaxies with a mean blue fraction, f_B, of 0.10. The blue fraction increases to fainter luminosities, possible remnants of dwarf starburst population or the effects of dynamical friction removing bright, blue galaxies from the cluster population by mergers. We find the color-magnitude (CM) relation to be well defined and linear over the range of M_5500=-13 to -22. After calibration to multi-metallicity models, bright ellipticals are found to have luminosity weighted mean [Fe/H] values between -0.5 and +0.5, whereas low luminosity ellipticals have [Fe/H] values ranging from -2 to solar. The lack of CM relation in our continuum color suggests that a systematic age effect cancels the metallicity effects in this bandpass. This is confirmed with our age index which finds a weak correlation between luminosity and mean stellar age in ellipticals such that the stellar populations of bright ellipticals are 2 to 3 Gyrs younger than low luminosity ellipticals.Comment: 26 pages AAS LaTeX, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A

    Renewing the Exploration Approach for Mid-Enthalpy Systems: Examples from Northern England and Scotland

    After a promising start in the 1970s and 80s, the UK rather fell behind other countries in the search for viable mid-enthalpy geothermal resources. This situation began to turn around in 2004, when the first of three deep geothermal exploration boreholes were drilled in northern England. What distinguished these from earlier drilling in Cornwall was the deliberate search for naturallyhigh permeability associated with major faults, especially those that have undergone strike-slip reactivation during the Cenozoic. Boreholes at Eastgate in the North Pennines targeted buried radiothermal granite, whereas the 1,821m-deep Science Central Borehole in Newcastle upon Tyne targeted a postulated deep sedimentary aquifer (the Fell Sandstones), which were inferred to be connected laterally to the granitic heat source by a major fault (the reactivation of the Iapetus geo-suture). The drilling was in both cases rewarded with impressive heat flows, and in the case of Eastgate with what is believed to be the highest permeability yet found in a deep granite batholith anywhere in the world. In parallel with these developments, a re-assessment was made of the preexisting geothermal heat flow database for the UK, applying newly-standardised correction protocols for palaeoclimatic and topographic distortions, which were found to be particularly marked in Scotland (where only shallow boreholes had been used to establish geothermal gradients in the original 1980s analysis), Similar prospects in northern England (similar to that drilled at Science Central) are now the focus of commercial exploration efforts. Appraisal of fault dispositions relative to the present-day maximum compressive stress azimuth are being used to identify the most promising areas for intersecting fault-related permeability at depth. New geophysical tools – most notably atomic dielectric resonance scanning – are also being appraised for their ability to directly detect features (such as hot brines) which are indicative of localised convection in target fault zones and aquifers
