    Religious Corporations and the Law

This article will attempt to present a picture of the legal status of religious organizations, with particular reference to the enjoyment of the corporate privilege. Necessarily, this will involve at the outset an historical review tracing the development of that status, beginning with the practice of granting special charters to churches and culminating in the now familiar general incorporation statute. Special attention will be paid to distinctive problems that arose in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Virginia concerning corporate status. The historical review is followed by a summary survey of the current state laws relating to the incorporation of churches. The last section deals with questions that the granting and conditioning of corporate status for churches and the applicability of corporation laws to church bodies may raise under the religion clauses of the first amendment

Successive Combination Jet Algorithm For Hadron Collisions

Jet finding algorithms, as they are used in e+ee^+ e^- and hadron collisions, are reviewed and compared. It is suggested that a successive combination style algorithm, similar to that used in e+ee^+ e^- physics, might be useful also in hadron collisions, where cone style algorithms have been used previously.Comment: 18 pages plus four uuencoded postscript figures, REVTEX 3.0, CERN-TH.6860/9

Local freedom in the gravitational field

In a cosmological context, the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor, E_{ab} and H_{ab}, represent the locally free curvature - i.e. they are not pointwise determined by the matter fields. By performing a complete covariant decomposition of the derivatives of E_{ab} and H_{ab}, we show that the parts of the derivative of the curvature which are locally free (i.e. not pointwise determined by the matter via the Bianchi identities) are exactly the symmetrised trace-free spatial derivatives of E_{ab} and H_{ab} together with their spatial curls. These parts of the derivatives are shown to be crucial for the existence of gravitational waves.Comment: New results on gravitational waves included; new references added; revised version (IOP style) to appear Class. Remarks on a Proposed Super-Kamiokande Test for Quantum Gravity Induced Decoherence Effects

Lisi, Marrone, and Montanino have recently proposed a test for quantum gravity induced decoherence effects in neutrino oscillations observed at Super-Kamiokande. We comment here that their equations have the same qualitative form as the energy conserving objective state vector reduction equations discussed by a number of authors. However, using the Planckian parameter value proposed to explain state vector reduction leads to a neutrino oscillation effect many orders of magnitude smaller than would be detectable at Super-Kamiokande. Similar estimates hold for the Ghirardi, Rimini, and Weber spontaneous localization approach to state vector reduction, and our remarks are relevant as well to proposed KK meson and BB meson tests of gravity induced decoherence.Comment: 10 pages, plain Tex, no figure
