Physical And Environmental Factors That Can Bridge Income Inequality

    Get PDF
Income plays an important role in day to day life. Many factors affect the employment status of an individual. While some factors are personal traits such as self motivation and perseverance, where a person lives can also have an impact on their employability. Living in a state with a high median income can be beneficial to a person’s ability to earn a wage to support a standard of living. A state’s median income can be influenced by a variety of factors. Some factors are environmental, such as work place infrastructure and comfort, and geographical conditions such as location, climate and weather conditions. A state’s ability to have a strong economy which helps provide jobs for its residents also depends on the educational attainment of it residents and how welcoming the state is to industry. In this paper, we will examine five attributes that help determine the level of median income in each state. We will estimate a regression model for these variables and examine how these variables affect the median- income

    Environmental Sustainabilitys Impact On Earnings

There is ever increasing social pressure for businesses to adopt sustainable methods of production to minimize environmental impacts. While this may be laudable, businesses have a responsibility to their stakeholders to maximize financial results. These potentially competing objectives are often referred to as part of the triple bottom line. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the original bottom line, Earnings per Share, and the Environmental bottom line of conserving resources. Focusing on the health care sector, we find a clear relationship between EPS and the adoption of sustainable practices. We augment this study with a look at expectations. That is, to what extent are sustainable business practices affecting the financial markets assessment of expected future success v. current financial success? Future expectations could be affected if environmental initiatives signal enlightened leadership or if a business that adopts environmental initiatives is thus well-positioned to face regulatory uncertainty in the future. Either of these management advantages would raise expectations of future success and thus be reflected in higher stock prices today, beyond what is currently captured in earnings ratios

Were Standard Oil\u27s Railroad Rebates and Drawbacks Cost Justified?

In this essay, written for a symposium on the centennial anniversary of the Supreme Court\u27s Standard Oil decision, I reexamine the costjustification question. In the first part, I explain why the cost-justification question is central to the entire case and its acquired and evolving historical meaning. In the second part, I review the evidence of claimed efficiencies passed on to the railroads. I conclude that there is evidence that Standard Oil passed along significant cost savings to the railroads and that these savings could have justified a portion of the rebates and drawbacks. However, I conclude that there is little or no evidence that the rebates were proportional to the magnitude of the savings-which is the critical question. Moreover, elements in the structure and timing of the rebates and drawbacks seem more consistent with a story of exclusion than with cost justification

    Antitrust Energy

Marking the centennial anniversary of Standard Oil Co. v. United States, we argue that much of the critique of antitrust enforcement and the skepticism about its social significance suffer from “Nirvana fallacy” — comparing existing and feasible policies to ideal normative policies, and concluding that the existing and feasible ones are inherently inefficient because of their imperfections. Antitrust law and policy have always been and will always be imperfect. However, they are alive and kicking. The antitrust discipline is vibrant, evolving, and global. This essay introduces a number of important innovations in scholarship related to Standard Oil and its modern applications and identifies shifts in antitrust that will keep the field energized for some time to come

The objective of this study was to examine the association between academic performance (GPA) and the demographics, level of health condition, and factors of the surrounding environment of LIU Post student athletes. To do so, a survey was created and distributed to LIU Post student athletes, which resulted in a sample of 262 participants from ages 18 to 24 years old. Results show that student athletes who have teammates as best friends have a higher GPA. In addition, student athletes who base most of their academic decisions on advice from their coaches have a lower GPA. Lastly, when professors are aware of the students’ athletic status, their GPA is higher. Based on the results from this study, the researcher has proposed recommendations on how student athletes can improve their academic performance
