Home-based exercise training by using a smartphone app in patients with Parkinson’s disease: a feasibility study

    Get PDF
BackgroundParkinson’s disease (PD) patients experience deterioration in mobility with consequent inactivity and worsened health and social status. Physical activity and physiotherapy can improve motor impairments, but several barriers dishearten PD patients to exercise regularly. Home-based approaches (e.g., via mobile apps) and remote monitoring, could help in facing this issue.ObjectiveThis study aimed at testing the feasibility, usability and training effects of a home-based exercise program using a customized version of Parkinson Rehab® application.MethodsTwenty PD subjects participated in a two-month minimally supervised home-based training. Daily session consisted in performing PD-specific exercises plus a walking training. We measured: (i) feasibility (training adherence), usability and satisfaction (via an online survey); (ii) safety; (iii) training effects on PD severity, mobility, cognition, and mood. Evaluations were performed at: baseline, after 1-month of training, at the end of training (T2), and at 1-month follow-up (T3).ResultsEighteen out of twenty participants completed the study without important adverse events. Participants’ adherence was 91% ± 11.8 for exercise and 105.9% ± 30.6 for walking training. Usability and satisfaction survey scored 70.9 ± 7.7 out of 80. Improvements in PD severity, mobility and cognition were found at T2 and maintained at follow-up.ConclusionThe home-based training was feasible, safe and seems to positively act on PD-related symptoms, mobility, and cognition in patients with mild to moderate stage of PD disease. Additionally, the results suggest that the use of a mobile app might increase the amount of daily physical activity in our study population. Remote monitoring and tailored exercise programs appear to be key elements for promoting exercise. Future studies in a large cohort of PD participants at different stages of disease are needed to confirm these findings

Retracted articles in rehabilitation: just the tip of the iceberg? A bibliometric analysis

    No full text
Abstract Background and aim The volume of withdrawn publications in scholarly disciplines has grown steadily, but there is little awareness about this issue in rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to analyze the extent of retracted articles pertaining to rehabilitation. Methods Retracted articles were searched in 4 different bibliographic databases from their inception to April 2020: PubMed, Web of Science, WikiLetters and Retraction Watch. Three independent reviewers assessed the relevance of the retrieved articles to the rehabilitation area. Results Of 280 rehabilitation-related publications retracted between 1984 and 2020, 83 (29.6%) were published in 55 full open access journals and 197 (70.4%) were published in 147 traditional, non-open access or hybrid journals. In the last 10 years (2009–2018) there was a significant steady increase in both the total number of retractions (p < 0.005; r = 0.856; R 2 = 0.733) and retraction rate per year (p < 0.05; r = 0.751; R 2 = 0.564). However, the number of retractions represents a very small percentage (~ 0.1%) of the overall volume of publications in rehabilitation. Conclusions Our data indicate that the number of retracted articles in rehabilitation is increasing, although the phenomenon is still limited. However, the true prevalence of misconduct may go unnoticed due to the large number of low-quality journals not indexed in the searched databases. Physiotherapists should be aware of the danger of misleading information originating from withdrawn publications

Are they publishing? A descriptive cross-sectional profile and bibliometric analysis of the journal publication productivity of Italian physiotherapists

    No full text
Abstract Background In a clinical science-based profession such as physiotherapy, research is mandatory to update knowledge and to provide cost-effective, high quality treatments. This study aimed to provide point prevalence of Italian physiotherapists who are academics, holding a PhD degree, or being authors of scientific papers. The scientific journal productivity of physiotherapists was also thoroughly analyzed. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on all Italian physiotherapists. Academics, postdoctoral research fellows, and PhD graduates were identified by searching the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), Italian Society of Physiotherapy, and university websites. Then, authors of articles indexed in Scopus were searched. The following data were extracted: type of affiliation, authorship order, H-index, number of publications and citations, name of journals, year of publication, and journal’s Impact Factor. Results The prevalence of academics, physiotherapists holding a PhD, or being author was 0.01%, 0.05%, and 0.56%, respectively. We identified 1083 papers co-authored by Italian physiotherapists, and their number has progressively increased over the years (p < 0.001). There was a significant difference between researchers and clinicians in both publication productivity (p < 0.01), citations (p < 0.01), and H-Index (p = 0.05). Articles were published in 359 different journals, receiving a total of 13,373 citations. Conclusions Despite the low prevalence of faculty members and the reduced availability of PhD programs in Italy (forcing some students to study abroad), the quantity and quality of journal productivity is growing fast, and an increasing number of physiotherapists are involved in research activities
