Analysis and Diagnostic Implications of the Fusion and Attachment Protein Genes of Respiratory Syncytial Viruses of Ruminants
Respiratory syncytial viruses (RSVs) in ruminants are classified into two subgroups, ovine RSV and bovine RSV. Although ovine RSV infects cattle, its contribution to bovine respiratory tract disease has not been established which is an important issue for vaccine development in cattle.
Diagnosis by virus isolation or serology has low or variable sensitivity and/or specificity and PCR has been recommended as a rapid and sensitive technique for RSV detection. Prior to this study, a laboratory test to differentiate between bovine and ovine RSVs did not exist.
First, the nucleotide sequence of the ovine RSV fusion (F) gene was determined and compared with representative strains of bovine RSV and human RSV subgroups A and B. The ovine RSV F gene has 85% and 72-73% nucleotide identity with those of bovine RSV and human RSV respectively. The predicted amino acid sequence of the ovine RSV F gene has 94% and 83-84% amino acid identity with those of bovine RSV and human RSV respectively.
Two RT-PCR assays have been developed for simultaneous detection of bovine and ovine respiratory syncytial viruses. One, a set of primers amplified a 426 bp fragment of either bovine or ovine RSV F gene (RT-PCR F). PCR-F products could be distinguished by EcoRI or BstYI restriction endonuclease cleavage. In the other assay, a set of primers amplified a 542 bp fragment of either ovine or bovine RSV G gene (RTPCR G). EcoO109I and RsaI restriction enzymes were used to differentiate between the ovine and bovine PCR-G products. Sequencing of the PCR products confirmed the fidelity of both assays.
The two assays were evaluated using eight bovine RSV isolates, one ovine RSV, one bighorn sheep RSV, one caprine RSV, two human RSV isolates and several viruses associated with bovine respiratory tract disease.
The two PCR assays described in this study potentially constitute sensitive and specific means for simultaneous detection of bovine and ovine RSV and differentiation between them. However, RT-PCR F followed by the appropriate restriction enzyme cleavage may be superior to RT-PCR G to discriminate between the two ruminant RSV subgroups and for determining the relative contribution of ovine and bovine RSV to the pathogenesis of bovine respiratory tract disease. This is relevant to the complete understanding of RSV epidemiology and immunoprophylaxis
Broadband High Gain mm-Wave CMOS Amplifier With Complex Device Neutralization for 5G Communication System
Presently, the major challenge at the device level is the lack of sufficient device power gain of commercial IC technologies at THz. In this dissertation, we will address this device-level challenge. We first characterize their THz behaviors/modeling. Then, novel circuits-aware device core designs and optimizations to boost the device-level “gain-bandwidth product” at THz are presented.
This dissertation presents a wideband power amplifier at THz frequency range. The proposed power amplifier covers the frequency range from 100 to 125 GHz, supporting the operation in the low band of the D-band. Moreover, a novel embedding network, called complex neutralization scheme, is presented to boost the power gain of the device for near-fmax operation. Furthermore, in-house automation program is presented for optimum selection of the complex neutralization embedding network. The goal of this program is to maximize device Gain-BW for the available technology at target operating frequencies.
Furthermore, the proposed power amplifier is cascaded to increase the output power along with high gain. The presented work contains 3-stage complex neutralized differential blocks with output power combiner. The matching stages are optimized for low loss and wideband operation.
The proposed power amplifier is taped-out on using GlobalFoundries 45nm FD-SOI CMOS process. The electromagnetic simulations for the proposed power amplifier, which is biased in class AB, demonstrate a small signal gain of 19dB at 115 GHz with k factor more than 17. Moreover, the large signal simulations show a peak power added efficiency of 14% with saturated output power of 12.6dBm. The proposed system has a total active area of 0.23mm².M.S

The Amazing Race Repeated Update Q-Learning VS. Q-Learning
In this paper, we will conduct an experiment that aims to compare the performance of two reinforcement learning algorithms, the Repeated Update Q-learning algorithm (RUQL) [1] and the Q-learning algorithm(QL) [5]. A simulated version of a robot crawler developed by [6] will be used in this experiment, it is shown in figure (1). An investigation study about the difference in performance between RUQL and Q-learning algorithm (QL) [5] is discussed in this paper. Several trials and tests were conducted to estimate the difference in the crawler’s movement using both algorithms. Additionally, a detailed description of the Markovian decision processes (MDPs) elements [2] is introduced, MDP model includes states, actions and rewards for the task in hand. The parameters that were used and tuned in this experiment will be mentioned and the reasons for choosing their values will be explained. Finally, the source code for the crawler robot was modified in order to implement RUQL and Q-Learning (QL) algorithms, Eclipse [3] and Java SE Development Kit 8 (JDK) [4] are used for this purpose. After running the crawler robot simulation, the results drawn from the experiment showed that RUQL significantly outperforms the traditional QL.
A rare case of complete C2–C3 dislocation with mild neurological symptoms
The authors report a rare case of complete C2–C3 dislocation with unexpectedly mild neurological symptoms in a 57 year old man involved in a motor vehicle accident, who had previously undergone posterior laminectomy from C3 through C7. A retrospective chart analysis and a thorough radiographic review were performed. X-rays and CT of the cervical spine demonstrated a complete dislocation at the C2–C3 level. Computed tomographic angiography revealed disruption of both vertebral arteries; however, blood flow was evident in the basilar artery. After radiologically guided placement in cervical traction with tongs that reduced the subluxation by approximately 50% the patient had spontaneous eye opening and was able to follow commands. A two-stage 360(o) stabilization and fusion was performed and the patient was finally discharged 24 days after admission with his neurological status essentially unchanged. In conclusion, our patient presented with surprisingly mild neurological symptoms. The previously performed laminectomy could have both predisposed to injury as well as protected his spinal cord from potentially fatal trauma
Diagnosing Cervical Fusion: A Comprehensive Literature Review
STUDY DESIGN: Comprehensive literature review.
PURPOSE: To document the criteria for fusion utilized in these studies to determine if a consensus on the definition of a solid fusion exists.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Numerous studies have reported on fusion rates following anterior cervical arthrodesis. There is a wide discrepancy in the fusion rates in these studies. While factors such as graft type, Instrumentation, and technique play a factor in fusion rate, another reason for the difference may be a result of differences in the definition of fusion following anterior cervical spine surgery.
METHODS: A comprehensive English Medline literature review from 1966 to 2004 using the key words anterior, cervical, and fusion was performed. We divided these into two groups: newer studies done between 2000 and 2004, and earlier studies done between 1966 and 2000. These articles were then analyzed for the number of patients, follow-up period, graft type, and levels fused. Moreover, all of the articles were examined for their definition of fusion along with their fusion rate.
RESULTS: In the earlier studies from 1966 to 2000, there was no consensus for what constituted a solid fusion. Only fifteen percent of these studies employed the most stringent definition of a solid fusion which was the presence of bridging bone and the absence of motion on flexion and extension radiographs. On the other hand, the later studies (2000 to 2004) used such a definition a majority (63%) of the time, suggesting that a consensus opinion for the definition of fusion is beginning to form.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that over the past several years, a consensus definition of fusion is beginning to form. However, a large percentage of studies are still being published without using stringent fusion criteria. To that end, we recommend that all studies reporting on fusion rates use the most stringent criteria for solid fusion following anterior cervical spine surgery: the absence of motion on flexion/extension views and presence of bridging trabeculae on lateral x-rays. We believe that a universal adoption of such uniform criteria will help to standardize such studies and make it more possible to compare one study with another
Children's and adolescents' rising animal-source food intakes in 1990-2018 were impacted by age, region, parental education and urbanicity
Animal-source foods (ASF) provide nutrition for children and adolescents physical and cognitive development. Here, we use data from the Global Dietary Database and Bayesian hierarchical models to quantify global, regional and national ASF intakes between 1990 and 2018 by age group across 185 countries, representing 93% of the worlds child population. Mean ASF intake was 1.9 servings per day, representing 16% of children consuming at least three daily servings. Intake was similar between boys and girls, but higher among urban children with educated parents. Consumption varied by age from 0.6 at <1 year to 2.5 servings per day at 1519 years. Between 1990 and 2018, mean ASF intake increased by 0.5 servings per week, with increases in all regions except sub-Saharan Africa. In 2018, total ASF consumption was highest in Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey, and lowest in Uganda, India, Kenya and Bangladesh. These findings can inform policy to address malnutrition through targeted ASF consumption programmes. (c) 2023, The Author(s)
Incident type 2 diabetes attributable to suboptimal diet in 184 countries
The global burden of diet-attributable type 2 diabetes (T2D) is not well established. This risk assessment model estimated T2D incidence among adults attributable to direct and body weight-mediated effects of 11 dietary factors in 184 countries in 1990 and 2018. In 2018, suboptimal intake of these dietary factors was estimated to be attributable to 14.1 million (95% uncertainty interval (UI), 13.814.4 million) incident T2D cases, representing 70.3% (68.871.8%) of new cases globally. Largest T2D burdens were attributable to insufficient whole-grain intake (26.1% (25.027.1%)), excess refined rice and wheat intake (24.6% (22.327.2%)) and excess processed meat intake (20.3% (18.323.5%)). Across regions, highest proportional burdens were in central and eastern Europe and central Asia (85.6% (83.487.7%)) and Latin America and the Caribbean (81.8% (80.183.4%)); and lowest proportional burdens were in South Asia (55.4% (52.160.7%)). Proportions of diet-attributable T2D were generally larger in men than in women and were inversely correlated with age. Diet-attributable T2D was generally larger among urban versus rural residents and higher versus lower educated individuals, except in high-income countries, central and eastern Europe and central Asia, where burdens were larger in rural residents and in lower educated individuals. Compared with 1990, global diet-attributable T2D increased by 2.6 absolute percentage points (8.6 million more cases) in 2018, with variation in these trends by world region and dietary factor. These findings inform nutritional priorities and clinical and public health planning to improve dietary quality and reduce T2D globally. (c) 2023, The Author(s)
